My Introduction
I am a child of the 90s, Axe Africa (deodorant) was the first fragrance in my life where I thought "Wow! This is it!". I found all the other Axe products silly, but this Axe Africa was just it. Back then, I was still a little kid and didn't know that Axe Africa would remain my secret tip well into adulthood. When I started shaving in my teenage years and looked around, Axe Africa became my aftershave and by far my most complimented scent. By then, I knew that the Axe brand was somewhat frowned upon, so I enjoyed having fun with it and made the questioners guess for a long time. A few interactions later, I also gained the experience that it apparently smells different, seemingly more positively, on my skin. In any case, many people liked it on me, and when I showed them the bottle, they often wrinkled their noses. Maybe it was just too intense and sharply citrusy, straight from the bottle, I don't know.
Fast forward, I am now 30 and have started collecting, and of course, Axe Africa cannot be missing. It's such a shame that there is no EDT or EDP of this great scent. It's completely inexplicable to me.
A small note: The old bottles as depicted here on parfumo seem to no longer be produced. Nowadays, I only find "Axe Africa - Invigorating Citrus," which is 90% the same, but from my memory, I would say that the old Axe Africa aftershave smelled fresher and more citrusy for longer. The Invigorating Citrus seems to hold only about 80% of the old scent and transforms earlier into a friendly mandarin, while the old Axe Africa, from my memory, remained very citrusy for a long time. But I could be mistaken; the human nose is a mystery to me. I'll add some pictures of the current bottles and packaging. In any case, I wanted to mention this because it was almost the reason why I didn't add Axe Africa to my collection. I didn't see anything with the old bottles, at least nothing under 50€ shipping :D And that's why I almost left feeling sad, but then I just ordered "Axe Africa Invigorating Citrus" and Eureka! So technically, half of my review is now not about Axe Africa but about Axe Africa Invigorating Citrus, even though my love for this scent began with the old classic back in the early 2000s.
Anyway, I read here that Laura Biagiotti's Roma Uomo is supposed to be similar to Axe Africa, which is why I immediately went and sniffed Roma Uomo at the next Galeria Kaufhof. At first, I thought to myself, "What what what, this has nothing to do with Axe Africa," but I also honestly never realized that there should be mandarin in Axe Africa. Since I understood that, I can somehow see the similarity. I then bought Roma Uomo and love it too. Unfortunately, Roma Uomo (on me?) has massive sillage/durability problems, which is why it will probably remain more of a collectible and beloved object. But Axe Africa is my day-to-day feel-good scent. The difference between Axe Africa and Roma Uomo is that Axe Africa is more of a citrus bomb, while Roma Uomo is more of a lovely mandarin with a slightly bitter note (probably from the bay leaf and basil). This made Roma Uomo seem completely different to me at first spray, but at heart, they are both mandarins and quite similar. For example, in preparation for this review, I put Axe Africa on one wrist and Roma Uomo on the other forearm, and I honestly can't say where one ends and the other begins. But for those who might not be fond of the slightly bitter note of Roma Uomo and would like to experience a straightforward citrus mandarin, Axe Africa is highly recommended.
Axe Africa does what it should on the skin. It's just an aftershave. I like to overdo it with it and slather it on after showering until I become nose-blind. Then I get a good few (3?) hours out of it. For this super low price, I would gladly do it again. I actually have several bottles in stock in my cupboard. It doesn't cling to clothes for super long, but it's okay. Currently, my "fresh standard" is to slap Axe Africa on my face and neck (and then it’s on my hands), and then something else fresh (currently mostly Club de Nuit Intense Man) on my chest/clothes, however I feel like it. In any case, Club de Nuit lasts so well on clothes, which carries me through the day when Axe Africa slowly fades. So I like to complement Axe Africa with something else fresh, fruity/citrusy that lasts longer.
TL;DR: A fragrance favorite and secret tip that the world owes an EDT/EDP to, which is why it only exists in medium durability. Sillage during this time is still good.
