Smells of memories past
If I smell sandalwood, I instantly think of my father. If I smell Tommy Girl, I think of my first crush. Smells do that, they hone in on times, situations and people. That's also true with Hugo.

The smell is 1996, the soundtrack is Brit Pop and the attire is jeans, Burberry shirts and a Harrington jacket. The overwhelming smell is fresh, but not really one dimensional; there are a few spicy, zesty and fruity notes there, lingering in the background.

Hugo will always be a classic for me, I think it was the first 'real' aftershave I owned, but it's an aftershave for 15 year old me. It's the aftershave of parties, school discos and furtive, nervous kisses. When I smell it now, it smells dated, but I don't know whether that's because my tastes have changed or because everyone's tastes have changed.

A few years back I bought a bottle for nostalgia's sake, but I soon discovered that I could no longer pull it off. Great for evoking memories past, but definitely a young man's scent in my opinion.

A Flask Full Of Freshness
The mistral blows. A cool and fresh wind comes from the north, bringing a unique fragrance with it. It is a mix of sea salt water, aromatic and spicy herbs, and mossy pine woods. Smelling that fantastic aroma, I see an open-air place chock full of aromatic plants and fragrant flowers in a vast shoreline of the Camargue, a natural region located south of Arles, France. Hugo cologne has all those vibes and memories hidden inside it. Released the same year as Le Mâle Eau de Toilette is a green, resinous, and aromatic fragrance that's easier to wear and fresher on the skin compared to the latter. Several flankers followed the OG, and I have got many of them; they are all good, but Hugo remains the best, in my opinion.

The opening is lively, citrusy and herbaceous, and comes from a fruity and aromatic cocktail of thyme, green apple, mint, basil, and grapefruit. The freshly sliced apple pulp melts with the sour bergamot juice, and the mint is heavenly. It's a juicy and slightly sweet green apple that mixes with a refreshing dose of fresh mint, creating that classic Hugo Boss signature opening. Together with this blend, I get an alcoholic tinge. Well, the alcoholic vibe subsides, but almost immediately afterward, when the pine needle and cedar leaf kick in, it returns. Not as strong as in the beginning, but still. If I were to pair this accord with a liqueur, it would be a glass of chilled French Vermouth, although the list mentions Rum. The green apple is just a hint, not too heavy, and it doesn't have a key role as in Boss Bottled Eau de Toilette .

The heart notes are a floral garden of spicy carnation, sweet geranium, and jasmine. It is nice green, aromatic, and slightly salty. When it is healthy, velvety sage is glossy, bushy and gives off that delicious earthy and moldy aroma. Its suede-like grey leaves remind me of the Provencal countryside. The redolence assumes a watery facet, so crisp and so refreshing. However, it is an aqueous feeling, nothing salty or marine.

Its dry down is mostly mossy and balmy, with oakmoss and fir balsam keeping it clean but muddy with enough warmth. A green and earthy vetiver balances the creaminess of the sandalwood while a smooth leather lingers in the background. It's masculine, sensual, green, and very soft.

Users may consider it for younger guys, but I am in my late 50s and still enjoy it very much. It is an all-around good green splash that seldom, if ever, disappoints and always gets compliments. While it's not a potent scent, it's pleasant for people to smell on you. It's sporty, youthful, and energetic, so it's perfect for casual wear or in the office. Wear this scent during the warming days of spring or through the heat of the summer. It wears well in the daytime, is a smart casual cologne, and can easily be used for formal and informal situations. Hugo is closely akin to Cerimonia pour Homme, and the recently reformulated CH Men Eau de Toilette without the sweet accord, all are alternatives with a closely similar vibe.

I base this review on a 75ml bottle I have owned since January 2020 (BC 9324, 2019-11-20).

A bit sharp for my personal tastes
The popularity of this fragrance is immense. Many guys smell like Hugo, either that or a Lynx deoderant that smells a little similar.

Hugo is quite a bold fragrance. In cold weather it really shines, however I find in warmer weather it makes me nauseous. It's quite green and fruity with hints of minty freshness and powerful, aromatic herbs.

It's a mixture of warm apple pie, mint chewing gum and a sachet of lavender for sleep benefits. I think if this fragrance were more subtle I'd probably like it, but for the time being, Hugo is a little sharp.

Synthetic, yes. Like a mish-mash of laundry soap, mouthwash and a herb garden, that never seems all that believable. Men probably wear it because it's safe and well-known. Although it is pleasant and likable in some ways, Hugo isn't a woman magnet, at least not in my opinion.

The sillage and longevity are great, really powerful, so I guess that's one plus. I'm rather underwhelmed by Hugo, but I will admit that there are some of my female friends that wouldn't want to smell anything else on their man. I guess it's true; beauty really is in the eye of the beholder, or nose at least.

Simple everyday fragrance
A modest perfume that has been on the market for a long time and it is no wonder, as it has its qualities.

Green, that's how this fragrance opens, the mint and basil, with the lavender giving an air of cleanliness and the green apple and grapefruit leaving it slightly citrus fruity.

After a while it becomes slightly spiced up by cloves and sage, with geranium and jasmine just balancing the scent. Patchouli and cedar bring a slightly woody air that complements the green aroma that becomes linear and synthetic.

Simple everyday scent, nothing special, but not bad. It seems like a perfume indicated for those in high school or university.

Childhood in a bottle
My teenage girl years spent drenched in the 90s original bottle. My dad received it as a gift but he wasn't one using perfumes back then. It became my forever love.

This bottle of freshness helped me discover and identify myself as a non-girly girl. And I have loved woody, spicy, cooling and calming scents ever since.

It is childhood for me, with fond memories of 30s blues, 50s jazz and 70s rock.

I am still looking for a niche replacement. If anyone knows, please let me know.

A classic scent you can never go wrong with, light but not too light. An apple orchard on a beautiful spring day, daytime scent for office.

One of the first bubble gum frags, with an emphasis on sweet apple and mint - the brother of the OG Tommy. Synthetic, greenish and smooth.
