It’s a quiet confidence kind of perfume…
Smells exactly like the bottle. Kinda grey, cold but with a sophisticated confidence. It’s the type that enters the room and you immediately adjust your posture. It’s not threatening but I don’t know, it has a certain aura that draws you in and makes you straighten up…

Rose, earthy and gender neutral! Looking at the notes I wouldn’t have liked it but it somehow works and made it to my wardrobe. Very long-lasting on me and always gets noticed. I don’t wear Gris Dior often because I haven’t quite figured out where it suits me the best, but I have no plans of decluttering it. I find the fragrance unique and I really appreciate the artistry of it! Don’t let the notes deter you from trying this one out, it’ll surprise you.

- Decluttered because I never wore this. I need to test things that are similar to it and make up my find if this particular style suits me. I still recommend this perfume though.

Rose-patch perfection
Gris Dior is all about that effortless chic appearance. Knowing you are a 10, no need to point it out. Looking stunning after grabbing a random shirt in a rush. Freestyling a memorable wedding speech. Getting the best table in your favorite café without asking. Just one cigarette.

Each component is highly refined and contributes to that perfectly understated class. There are other perfumes out there with a similar fresh-elegant rose - think Le Cri and Eau Capitale Eau de Parfum - but not one as deceptively casual and ever-appropriate as Gris Dior. Formidable!

The soul of Dior
I don't think this should be part of Dior's private line. Not because it's too simple or not experimental enough or it's too low-quality or too "perfume"-y or anything like that. It's just very mass-appealing and I think hidden away in the private line means that women (and some men) will miss out on finding this as their signature scent.

For me, it's sort of the foil, or feminine version of Dior Homme Intense (2011). Not a feminine version in that it shares a lot of similarity in terms of scent, but it kind of captures the soul of Dior in the same way DHI does for the men's side in my opinion. It somehow evokes models on runways, brand new purses, the interior of a Dior boutique. It's beautiful and magnetic yet remains aloof.

It's a simple idea, a modern patchouli-based floral chypre, but executed to perfection. A sparkling bergamot opening leads directly into a rose note that is propped up by powdery, slightly earthy woods. It sounds quite unisex, and there are definitely some men who can rock this, but for me it's a bit too delicate and "pretty." I think replacing Joseph Quinn with Jenna Ortega as the face of the scent was the right decision; 90% of guys, especially non-fragheads, walking into Neiman Marcus or a Dior boutique, would scoff at the femininity of the powdery florals in Gris Dior.

Lovely citrus floral with woody accords - recommended for its elegance, not performance
Gris Dior has been described by many as powdery, floral and spicy. I would call it indefinable, but not because it is too magnificent to describe in words. The perfumer has blended the notes seamlessly to a perfectly homogenous fragrance, eschewing easy adjectives. This review is based on a 7.5 ml vial of Gris Dior, which I believe is a good starting point for expensive fragrances.

The opening of Gris Dior is complex and beautiful. Dior describes this perfume as a “chypre trail faceted by notes of citrus, rose, violet and oak moss”. My nose detects citrus, rose and patchouli in the opening, perhaps in that order. I am not familiar enough with oak moss to pick it out. The heart notes continue with the opening notes with violet taking the place of citrus notes. There is another mild sweet note in the middle, possibly a white floral or vanilla that I cannot confirm. The base notes express amber and woody notes, with a touch of rose. The ending is sweet and lovely, but it is too mild to project a vibe. I don’t find any pressing reason to describe Gris Dior as a chypre scent because of this enduring sweetness. Gris Dior is a perfume that manifests as a single entity, and not as discrete notes that appear at different times.

The performance of Gris Dior is good with the heart notes lasting on my skin for 6-8 hours. But bear in mind that it is an elegant, mature perfume without a loud projection. The sillage is appropriate for a perfume of that personality. Gris Dior is not a party animal, and you are unlikely to notice it if there are other ambient smells in the air.

I recommend Gris Dior for its elegant personality. It is not particularly creative, nor demanding of your attention. But it is a reliable workhorse that can be worn without much deliberation. The price of $165 for 40 ml is a bit steep, but it is great value if you can get it closer to $100.

The Growth Cycle of a Rose
Joseph Quinn is the new face of Gris Dior and he was quoted saying "I've never smelled anything quite like it before." To me that's just marketing speak, he can't say he hates it, but he probably doesn't know the right terms to describe the fragrance properly. As a fan of his I was curious to try the scent myself. I found a 2ml sample on eBay for a few £ and I bought it.

I went in with low expectations. After wearing the scent for an afternoon I've found I agree with Joseph; I've never smelled any fragrance that does what Gris does before.

Opening with a citrus top that's light and airy and fresh, like a spring sky, the fragrance dries down into an earthy moss - the patchouli and oakmoss. Just when you think it couldn't possibly develop any further it blooms into a gorgeous sparkling rose. Gris really is an olfactory journey, taking the wearer through the growth cycle of the rose from the crisp air to the rain damp earth to the fragrant bloom. It's something entirely magical.

Elegant, smooth rose with the sweetness of amber, rounded with cedar and sandalwood. Discreet and distinguished. Leaning for women.

I always think it's too sweet, but it's one of the more complimented frags I have. Strange but it makes me think of snow and lasts for hours

This is a self-serious chypre. Not much humor, a bit stiff while standing in the corner, but well-dressed.
