What Nautica Voyage should have been
Purchased from : eBay
Price paid : $17 @ 60% full
Format : 3.4 oz bottle
Method : Left hand
Open is vinegary, with slight moss and brackish salt water accords. It's like low tide on the Mississippi coast (I live here). Does not inspire confidence.
Some lemon juice comes through after a minute or two which doesn't help the cacophony of opening notes and further adds annoyance.
At around 10 minutes I get lemon juice and ginger, with some salty sea spray and hints of chardonnay. It's not a show-stopper. It is mid-pleasant - like maybe shrimp alfredo at Olive Garden. You might order it for business lunches because you know it's not terrible even if you're not fond of the restaurant.
I'm getting some strong Dylan Blue vibes here at 20 minutes. It's like all of these separate notes that didn't belong together are now forming a rough picture of DB but it's still jagged, and your mind fills in the gaps to paint the rest of the picture because you want it to. It's rough but it works. Like that treasure box puzzle in Resident Evil that's not quite right. It doesn't feel as one accord. But you get what it's going for.
Projection is pretty good yet, sitting at about 3" off the skin, so it fits the description of a summer projector, but not a monster like Kenneth Cole Blue (which is also cheaper).
30 minutes yields a hint of fattiness, still sitting firmly in that "expensive blue" territory; lemon custard, a glass of saltwater, and some rosemary sprigs. I still get fantastic projection at 45 minutes but the notes are much lower in volume now. By this point I'm getting strong Voyage vibes too, but without the disgusting milk cucumber notes.
Testing this next to Kenneth Cole Blue at the same time frame. Ocean takes on a far more "expensive-smelling"/bougee vibe, but even the least experienced noses aren't fooled with the mustardy dill note that pokes through giving it away as a pedestrian dupe. Cole has its own thing, lights a cig, and does not care what you think. Ocean is busy trying to fool you through masquerade but forgot to zip up their left sleeve. It notices and then trips over its shoelace but regains its balance. You can probably fool some people in your sillage but if they spend some time with you and know their colognes they'll be able to tell you're not actually wearing Versace.
At 60 minutes it's less like Dylan Blue and more like Nautica Voyage. Lemon water, crisp green apple, and salty sea notes, with slight fattiness, still projecting well. If I remember right, this is a 3-4 hour performer and gets better as it goes on.
I'd say Ocean firmly falls in the "pay no more than $30" category. That means eBay, or a BOGO sale @ B&BW. A dizzying amount of the B&BW colognes are rip offs when it comes to longevity and performance. This one does ok.
There are far worse blue dupes on the market. Just don't overpay for this one.
++++
Edit : Re-titling. This is actually a better, more bougee version of Nautica Voyage without the gross milky cucumber aromas. Nautica Voyage Ultra Plus.
