502 Iris Cartagena Bon Parfumeur 2025 Eau de Parfum

I'll start off by saying, this is a review based on the official sample of the Eau de Parfum concentration version. Also, full disclosure, gourmands are not really my usual thing.

So, the sample that I have is just a little vial of the liquid - no rollerball, no applicator, no atomizer. So in applying this I may have overdone it a bit (and some got on the floor). I'd estimate that I used at least .25 to .5 ml of the 2.5ml sample in that initial attempt.

Anyway, the opening for me was actually kind of unpleasant. Just a cacophony of notes, and I couldn't make much of it. Possibly the opening was overpowered with the alcohol of the rum top note? I can't be sure.

But a couple of minutes later once it dried down a bit, it was really beautiful. I mainly got soft woods, (raw) cocoa and a smell that to me smelled just like butter (like, food butter) but which I assume is the orris butter, with a subtle coffee smell underneath. I couldn't pick out any of the other notes specifically, but I imagine they were in there, blended in with the rest. Biggest players here for me were cocoa and BUTTER (like, for food - that's how I perceived it). As odd as it sounds, the butter scent was actually oddly pleasant.

I would describe this fragrance experience as being principally (1) gourmand (cocoa + coffee + butter), as well as (2) creamy (from the butter / orris butter), (3) woody (sandalwood + papyrus), and then also mildly (4) powdery (from the cocoa?). I would say that, contrary to the ratings it has so far, for me it was much more creamy than powdery. I didn't find it to be spicy at all.

For projection/sillage I found it to stay close to the skin. Not a huge amount of projection. But it never disappeared on me. Which brings me to my biggest compliment for this fragrance.

Longevity on me was amazing! I applied the fragrance in the evening, around 9:00pm on my upper arm. I could smell it strongly on my skin (though not so much in the air) for the rest of the night. I went to bed at 11:30pm or so still smelling it. And when I woke up at 8:00am or so, I could still smell it crystal clear on my arm. I'm still smelling it now, though a bit more faintly, at 11:30am. So all I can say about longevity is that it appears to be stellar, even considering that I was using the EDP concentration rather than the extrait.

Bottom line? Though I generally prefer a more assertive fragrance, and I don't love gourmands, this was still really pleasant. I don't think it's full bottle worthy for my personal taste, but I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to someone who enjoys cocoa in their fragrances. For me, if I received this as a gift, I would use on a cozy indoor days.

I ordered a discovery set with five fragrances plus two samples from Bon Parfumeur. I was especially intrigued by 502 Iris Cartagena Eau de Parfum.
For me, 502 is above all one thing: iris from A to Z. Everything else - mandarin, cocoa and the warm gourmand facets - takes second place to this powdery iris.
I initially quite like the opening. The mandarin brings some brightness, accompanied by a boozy facet. My first note on it was pretty accurate: “Iris tipsy on rum.”
As it develops, however, the iris becomes increasingly massive to my nose. It is precisely this intensity that disappoints me somewhat. I had imagined the fragrance to be more balanced and gourmand, with a stronger interplay of cocoa, vanilla and coffee. Instead, the iris remains the dominant theme for me almost throughout. I don't notice eucalyptus and papyrus at all.
A comparison that comes to mind is Gentleman Givenchy Eau de Parfum. Both combine iris with a warm, gourmand base. To me, though, 502 is distinctly more powdery, while Réserve Privée comes across as warmer, denser and more sensual. In Givenchy, the iris feels more harmoniously integrated to me, whereas in 502 it is clearly front and center.
Incidentally, I find Bon Parfumeur's numbering system quite charming: The first digit represents the fragrance family. The 5 stands for gourmand, so 502 is the second creation within this family.
My daughter liked the fragrance somewhat more than I did. She gave it around 8/10 and noted, more or less: “Good start, but quickly fades.” I myself land at 7/10. The quality is there, but with 502 I notice very clearly that such a dominant iris simply isn't my preferred fragrance style.
For me, a well-made, elegant gourmand iris fragrance - just unfortunately with considerably more iris than I would have wished for.

Coffee... especially for colder days, this is a really great scent.

At first a bit unusual, but super well-rounded and simply delicious.

It starts very fresh and lightly green with a beautiful, ethereal iris note, before it becomes a bit unusual. Mandarin meets a chocolaty-dark rum accord. It sounds unusual at first, but it works surprisingly well.

Followed by creamy warmth from iris butter and vanilla, nestled on soft sandalwood, accompanied by a subtly herbal spiciness. Despite a slightly off-putting petitgrain opening for me, the fragrance finds a good balance.

Notes of coffee, mocha, and cocoa blend with sweet cocoa butter and remind one of a Pharisäer (black coffee with a splash of rum and a cream topping) with vanilla sugar. The sandalwood adds a lot of creaminess, while the iris provides a powderiness that rounds everything off.

Longevity is good for an Eau de Parfum but not exceptionally intense, lasting about 7 to 8 hours, during which it develops closely to the skin after a few hours. Those looking for strong presence throughout the day will be disappointed here.

Bon Parfumeur 502 Iris Cartagena is a fragrance that surprises, fascinates, and unfolds anew on the skin with every passing minute. The opening is already unusual: the zesty mandarin meets a cool hint of eucalyptus - a combination that is almost jarring at first but is exactly what makes it so exciting. This fresh spiciness awakens the senses and announces that this scent does not follow the usual path.

Shortly after, a dry, almost powdery-chocolatey depth emerges. The cocoa provides a warm, slightly bitter gourmand note that gives the perfume character and depth. At the same time, the iris introduces a gentle elegance, a creamy veil that binds everything together. In the base, the sandalwood brings calm, warmth, and a soft roundness that beautifully grounds the fragrance.

With each passing hour, Iris Cartagena becomes more harmonious, softer, and at the same time more refined. It impressively lingers on the skin for a long time and develops a kind of "love effect" - the longer you wear it, the more it grows on you.
