502 Iris Cartagena Bon Parfumeur 2024 Extrait de Parfum

I've been trying to write about this fragrance, thinking too much, probably way more than needed, everything about this fragrance is beautiful, the inspiration Ludovic love story, the work by the perfumer Clément Marx who did an incredible achievement here, it's not easy to find a great cocoa fragrance, much less a great one with elegance, and I'm happy to say, this is it. Honestly, to me, the best creation Bon Parfumeur has done until today. 

The main notes I get from Iris Cartagena are cocoa and cedar/papyrus, this are the protagonists, yet, there's enough complexity to make it interesting without going overboard. The iris helps give it a romantic aura, alongside the vanilla which provides a backbone to the fragrance. The textured cedar note gives a slight sharp nature to the perfume which helps giving it character, with some green facets which I guess may come from papyrus helps further provides a beautiful balance to the cocoa. 

This one is stunning and very much deserving of all praises it is getting, a comforting fragrance that not only provides a complex nature yet easy to enjoy, it avoids the over saturated gourmand territory with their ultra synthetic sweetness and manages to create something unique without being strange, easy to love and creates such a beautiful aura of scent around us. Yep, if you can see my enthusiasm, you can tell how much I love this one, honestly, one of my favorite cocoa fragrance I've come across in my scented journey. I can only say, bravo to the team behind this creation!

This fragrance is all over Instagram for some reason so I thought I'd give it a try to see what the hype (paid or otherwise) was about. I was expecting, at least from the name if not from the notes, a "carribean" type of scent with rum, sugar cane, cacao, plus the namesake powdery iris.

What I was not expecting, and hadn't really seen mentioned before is the butteriness of this fragrance. Not orris butter, but cow's milk butter. Smells exactly like a kitchen after melting some butter in a pan or in the microwave. Even gives off a bit of popcorn vibes just from the butteriness of it. Sure, the iris and cacao are there and provide a bit of sweetness and powderiness but the butter overwhelms. Not really my thing.

gourmand lovers with a 9-5 rejoice, this is a classy, balanced, powdery gourmand that sits close enough to your skin to not fumigate the general public. this is not sillage-negative, you can at least smell yourself, but this is simply not going to create a bioweapon scent bubble in close quarters, which is an underrated quality for a fragrance to have. the iris is present, the cacao is distinct and warm without being cloying or bakery-adjacent, the rum adds a sensual mysterious smoothness, and the woods are not the awkward generic and unblended woody base slapped into a lot of sweet fragrances.

i can't say at this time that i'd buy a full bottle but this is really great for itching a gourmand nagging in a demure fashion when you don't want to be a walking cupcake. this is also very unisex to me and probably would be really fantastic on a man as much as on a woman.

In the opening, a deep chalky cocoa is paired with a softly sweet and slightly creamy vanilla. There’s a very light booziness from the rum and a faint bitter orange pith. The iris adds more powdery texture and has a very woody and rooty sweetness. The wood notes are very dry, like dusty planks of timber, and there’s a nice warm spice from the cedar. I imagine it would be a good powdery scent for the witch in Hansel and Gretel if she were kind of a femme fatale. There’s something sexy about it while having some woodsy and gourmand elements. It feels well-balanced at the opening and is neither heavy nor cloying.

The blend of cocoa, vanilla and sandalwood combine together in a way that reminds me of a dusty gothic wilted rose, without actually smelling like rose. Shortly after the lovely opening, things become a little bit sweeter and spicier. After 30 minutes, the vanilla is sweet in a way that feels less balanced, and I start to feel the cocoa powder slipping through my fingers. The vanilla feels like it glows next to the chalky iris dust and powdery woodiness.

The sandalwood gets pickle-y for a short period and then I don’t notice it anymore. The sweetness returns to a more balanced level after an hour, the woodiness shifts to the forefront, and the soft iris with the cedar spice feels very cozy and comforting. I wouldn’t say the scent gets green, but things start to lighten and brighten with help from the vetiver. I notice an almost watery quality that thins the fragrance out. The scent is still soft, warm and cozy, but now it has a clean feeling to it as well. There’s maybe a slight bitterness in the base, but no real noticeable coffee scent to my nose. After three of four hours, it feels relatively generic, like a powdery department store woody vanilla. I think it could have been more interesting if the cocoa was in the base, but it fades so quickly that this is primarily a vanilla-based orris scent.

I originally got this as a decant and thought it was meh. Then I found myself reaching for it more and more and more, especially as it got colder. To me, this is the romantic gourmand counterpart of the infamous “dusty,” incense-heavy cathedral perfumes loved by goth girls everywhere. As someone who is slightly edgy, but not quite subcultural, Iris Cartagena 504 happily tows the line between mainstream and experimental. It’s got one foot in vintage and antique, with a sturdy dry, powdery, papery base; and one foot in date night, with rum and cocoa adding aromatic sweetness, but never something that veers synthetic or sugary. I can see why Diptyque lovers like myself tend towards this house. You won’t be getting screechy synthetics or artificially “clean” citruses/powders and indole-bomb florals. It’s refined without being snobby, simple yet bold: a polished composition without secret corners. It does not evolve — it lingers, like an extrait ought to. I am not the kind of person who can drop $200+ on a perfume every day (high school teacher), but this one spoke to me very clearly after days-long flip-flopping between getting a bunch of never-before-smelled springy decants *or* springing for a full-size of this. It won out, despite it going out of season. That alone should tell you how hopelessly devoted I am to this fragrance.

Do I think this is a safe blind buy? Absolutely not. Definitely try to get a decant before you commit; however, if you tend to like woody/powdery scents as much as I do, I’d say this as safe as long as you’re not hoping for sugar-sweet.

And when I *am* feeling sugar-sweet, I lather myself in SDJ’s Bum Bum Cream (Salted Caramel Pistachio) and add a light spritz of Lattafa’s Eclaire Pistache (Dubai Chocolate) after dousing my pulse points in Iris Cartagena. It elevates any nutty, chocolaty gourmand to a status of undeniable maturity. The thought of this may be sacrilege to some, but it was my combo of choice around the holidays; and I wore it multiple times to many compliments!

I genuinely could not rave about this fragrance any harder. An easy reach that will become even easier now that I’m not frantically conserving every last drop of an 8ml.
