Sometimes it has to be Chanel...
To my shame, I must confess...,uh, no, it's not shame, it just happens. Christmas is Chanel, Chanel is Christmas. And I don't mind why I'm in love with a leather scent, because it's a Polge product. Polge is kind of like Thierry Wasser, only chanelled. And Thierry, as brilliant as he is, just like his forerunners from the same company, has failed to create a leather scent I really, really love. Polge did.
At the same time, I wasn't at all willing to try Cuir de Russie, to like it, or even to encounter it uncritically. I had all but dismissed overly leather-heavy scents for myself. Some have found their way into my home over the...it's been decades! Farina's Russian Leather was surprisingly good, Habit Rouge I found only as a dress code really great, some fragrances with suede also charmed me for some time.
The other day, however, a perfumer whose opinion I generally consider quite sound mentioned that Chanel' Extrait of Cuir de Russie was divine. Unfortunately, it was not enough with me not to the Extrait, only to the EdP, which is possibly not quite so perfect, but for me it is already damn great.
It combines everything I expect from a wearable leather fragrance: soft to almost creamy, at the beginning light, fresh fruit notes, then the delicate leather in union with sweet spicy notes. Roses form the bed on which the Chanel leather bag lies, a little wood underpins and supports the noble effect.
Absolutely classic, not subjected to any fashion or current, like No.5, here only as a leather object of desire. Chanel just.
