Not photorealistic, but still evocative
As someone who spent years backstage, it isn't quite the smell like a theater to me -- there's not enough sawdust, paint, hot electronics, or burning dust. That's probably for the best.

There is a heat to this fragrance that keeps me sniffing my wrist throughout the day. It smells warm and a bit synthetic with an almost humid stuffiness. I once saw someone compare the smell of this to hot laundry fresh from the dryer and haven't stopped thinking about that comparison since.

It's that heat that makes this fragrance evoke the idea of the theater to me. Velvety seats, stage lights, the press of the crowd in the lobby with the lingering scent of rosy, musky perfume and after-dinner coffee clinging to their heavy winter coats. I adore the coffee note in this -- the bitterness cuts through the dustiness of the other notes and makes my mouth water.

Perfectly unisex and wears fairly close to the skin. I love wearing this for nights out in the fall and winter.

The Fourth Wall
Thankfully, the floors are freshly cleaned, the costumes are hanging ready, smelling of laundry detergent. As a 'ToiToiToi' from a colleague, a single rose stands in an empty toothbrush holder in front of the mirror. Stage ritual: brush teeth beforehand. Idiotic, but calming. The last shadow under the eyes powdered away. A hasty sip of coffee on top. Shouldn't do it, makes one even more nervous. Whatever. The stage manager crackles over the loudspeaker (hopelessly trying to adjust the volume) that it is now time.
ToiToiTois are murmured in embrace. Only the Spanish colleague whispers "MierdaMierdaMierda" and suggests three times pinching the butt. One could question that. But no one does. It's just how it is. Standing in a circle, looking everyone in the eyes. Like children looking: encountering a pair of eyes without pretense. Without a shy smile, without irony, without a furrowed brow. Just look.
Deep breath.
Lights out.
Lights on.
Act 1.

The fourth wall in theater is one that isn’t really there: the audience. From the perspective of the stage. And from the viewpoint of that, namely the audience, I initially tried to fathom the scent and could hardly connect it with the publicly accessible areas of a theater. Every theater smells different, I admit, but none smelled like this. Until the moment my perception shifted, this scent, which wanders between synthetic fabric softener, minimal rose, and coffee, was unpleasant to me. Especially the coffee note, which strangely stands out from this otherwise fluffy floral web, was repugnant to me.
And then came the powder, and my associations-or rather my lack of ability to associate-tipped over along with the fourth wall, backwards towards the stage.
And so we landed in the often shabby, albeit (mostly) well-cleaned back rooms of the theater, which often look like a functional building from the GDR era compared to the publicly accessible areas. Only in small niche theaters do both usually look comparable. Equally shabby or equally minimally nice.

So, the dressing room.
Theater makeup, washed costumes, the coffee, the rose. Alongside something slightly artificial-metallic. The backstage, where cables, spotlights, and all sorts of technical clutter exist in organized chaos. And suddenly, this scent, which I actually don't like, is very close to me.

It is noticeably from the same family as Odeur 71 or Odeur 53. A series of scents that were once conceived as anti-perfumes, and whose greatest scandal today is how incredibly wearable toaster brand and lettuce are. Artificial, at times industrially clinical, reflecting a world between light bulbs, printers, and aforementioned toasters (as well as always laundry detergent). And yet mostly absolutely wearable. On the right person, perhaps even fabulous.

This one will not be my scent. A bit too clean for me in the light of day, both for myself and for the theater. It lacks something more human, if necessary, even a bit of fresh sweat. However, that misses the point of the Odeur series.
Nevertheless. What unsettles, confuses, and sends one traveling seems to be doing something right.

The Cellar of Other People
I don't know how it was for you when you were children. I was fascinated by cellars. Hobby rooms, technical rooms, laundries, toolboxes. All places that were excellent for playing. With my vivid imagination, definitely. I also loved the smells of cellars. It smelled mineral, slightly dusty, of technology, of special things that aren't always easy to classify. And of laundry detergent and fabric softener. Scents that I found absolutely wonderful in the eighties. Often, a door from the cellar led directly to the garden. Sometimes garden tools, like a lawnmower with grass clippings or a rake, could also be found in the cellar. Going on an exploration there was one of my favorite pastimes. I could spend hours hanging around there. And often, I even found very special treasures in such places.

Odeur du Théâtre du Châtelet - Acte I is supposed to transport the wearer to the theater. However, this scent sends me to cellars. To many different cellars, where there is so much to discover. Musk and orange blossom remind me of freshly washed laundry on the line, green and woody impressions, I suspect ambrette and cedar, evoke the impression of garden tools that still have some remnants of freshly mown grass clinging to them, and old wooden garden furniture is standing somewhere in the corner. The scent also has something mineral that reminds me of my father's toolbox. It transports me back to childhood and makes my eyes shine. At the sight of many such ordinary objects, which can hold a great magic for a child.

Many thanks to Ergoproxy for the testing opportunity. It is surprisingly beautiful. It has notes of Marseille, especially through the musk, but also has wonderfully fresh and green notes and wears so pleasantly. Whether I need it, I have not yet decided. Cashmeran sometimes annoys me only after the second or third wear test. So I'm taking my time with this one. The brand Comme des Garçons impressively demonstrates once again how beautifully synthetic compositions can smell.

Odeur 21 Years Later
Comme des Garçons celebrated the 25th anniversary of the perfume with a scent from the Puig-produced 'export' line, Copper; a new series of perfumes, series 10, another collaboration, and a fragrance that connects to Odeur 53 and Odeur 71 (1998/2001). The Odeurs are among the most extraordinary releases of the brand, having targeted new territory with their explicit conveyance of industrial notes, which can be read as 'inspiration' for a good half dozen other brands and perfumers. Seamlessly connecting to Odeur 53 or 71 was certainly not the intention behind this 'new' Odeur Du Théâtre Du Châtelet, or something that is now conceptually more difficult and rather uninteresting. Odeur Du Théâtre Du Châtelet has a similar lightweight structure to 53 and 71, but is significantly sweeter and more perfume-like. However, it is the narrative behind the fragrance that makes the difference: as the name suggests, it is meant to be a commentary on the smell of a single place, the aforementioned Parisian Théâtre Du Châtelet, an institution. While 53 and 71 carried a multitude of places, non-places, and objects, everything is now much more compact and narrowly defined: theater, performance practice, intermissions, buffet, coffee, materials on site, makeup, theater technology. And it is also traditionally discussed in terms of notes: ambrette absolute, black pepper oil, rose oxyd, coffee accord, etc. Many landscape perfumes are a nightmare for me, and I am not quite sure what to think of the Théâtre Du Châtelet scent: however, it works quite well, and I am reminded of theater intermissions, foyers, and cloakrooms as I know them from the Vienna Burgtheater or the Schauspielhaus Graz - theater experts will surely smell these quite differently and chuckle at such a generalization of various houses, as each theater has its very own odeur. All in all, Odeur Du Théâtre Du Châtelet remains a cozy, contemplative affair that partially adopts the Odeur concept, but ultimately cannot and does not want to keep up with the spirit of Odeur 53 or 71.

I wore this the day I heard David Lynch died and it felt apt. Coffee, dust and an abstract open space, blurring at the edges.

Immediately hit with the smell of a carpet store, followed by some acidic-berry tones. Orange blossom? Maybe. I couldn’t wear it. But nice.

Solid fresh scent, although synthetic. Opens with bitter citrus peel, then morphs with flowery and white musk. A bit like Pure Musc by NR.

This old room,
So clean, it's hard to believe.
The stone floors polished
The windows gleamed
The scent of cleaning products still lightly fills the air.

The stage with the white dance floor was cleaned, and flowers were placed in the foyer. Slanted morning sunlight, a hint of coffee.

Reminds me of Hermann by ELdO. This one is definitely more synthetic and pleasantly more challenging. A typical CdG.

Laundry room in the 60s. 10kg washing drum + metal spin dryer. Crumbling concrete + plaster on the walls. Clean laundry in humid air.

Theater? More like a modernist café, then a luxurious spa area, with photogenic rose petal decor. Cozy, yet a bit soapy, floral.

For me, Acte I is in the tradition of the CdG-Odeur series (53, 71) and is correspondingly artificial: theater dust + metal + powder = art.

Finest concrete dust on a slightly sweet, clean musk. A wonderfully calm, softly bitter mineral scent. Very well done.
