The Rocky Missionary Path
One of the samples I chose was Rosewater, not really for me, but because I have been trying for ages to spark my mother's interest in my passion for fragrances. Well, "spark" is not the right word; igniting a spark of joy, being able to share my love for scents (and) encountering a bit of understanding would be a desirable, sufficient goal. Since she particularly loves roses and their various scents in her garden, it made sense to provide her with a corresponding selection. What have I not brought her, and I always received rather discouraging feedback, like:
"Hm, there's something else in there" (surely that's the case, otherwise it wouldn't be stable or too boring for the perfumer)
"It has something piercing about it" (I don't notice that)
"Yes, it smells like rose, but it changes quite a bit." (grumble)
"That's nice." (what a great compliment from her)
"Pretty lush." (well, at least you can smell it)
"A bit of an acquired taste" (just say you don't like it)
"That's somehow rather bland" (if it had a statement, it would probably be an acquired taste again)
"Yes, it's really authentic, but probably better as a room fragrance" (?!?!?)
Not that the comments on my personal favorites are any better; "nice" is the highest praise one can receive.
Now, Rosewater, with its only listed note: rose, seemed quite promising for another missionary attempt.
In my opinion, it starts off a bit herbaceous-rosy, with slight hints of myrrh, and indeed we have such a simply filled, pink English rose in our garden.
It lacks any sweetness, no fruity undertones, just pure rose with the aforementioned hints reminiscent of myrrh; at that time, the sillage is quite strong for an Eau fraiche.
After about 20 minutes, it becomes softer; after an hour, it reminds me of the finest, very subtly soapy rose soap.
It then retreats very close to the skin, but is still perceptible directly on the skin even after 8 hours.
Whom would I recommend it to? It is certainly not a work of art, but it might bring back memories of such to someone without available scented roses, whether because we have winter, making it the wrong season for them, or because one has to do without them in the big city.
Personally, I wouldn't chase after it, but if it crossed my path, then I would let it come with me.
What did my mother say about it?: "Quite nice." :-)
