Boozy, woody, a mix of sweet and sharp, a cognac that's a good departure from Angels' Share
Sampling D.S. & Durga – Cognac Reign, one of the house’s releases in 2025, a striking boozy blend with hearty, smoky, and woody aspects. It’s a less sweet cognac-led scent than, say, By Kilian Angels’ Share, instead pivoting a bit more toward the darker aspects, sort of hinting at a connection to smoky/leathery/resinous Amber Kiso. Cognac Reign is a little sweeter, albeit still with some heady sharpness (perhaps the via the orris, and even the cognac, itself), but overall has a similar character with a sort of woody center. I’m quite impressed by it and very much enjoy that they’ve released a fragrance in a similar vein (I’d argue) to Amber Kiso and Bowmakers, two of my favorites of the house’s main collection. It’s mainly its similarity to the former that gives me pause in wanting to buy this, but I similarly give it high marks to the other examples.

Its concentration is EDP, its retail pricing is $300/210 for 100/50ml, and it’s sold in the US via the house website and great boutiques like Olfactif and Ministry of Scent. Its performance is excellent, fitting for a dark, boozy niche perfume, and it’s a bold, robust scent that could serve one well throughout a cold season, particularly in formal occasions.

Not a traditional cognac accord
I think a lot of times as perfume lovers we get sucked into the idea that there is only one way to interpret an accord, or a scent in nature, but sometimes a fresh perspective is needed. When I first got into this hobby I was shocked to find that most boozy perfumes, or those that contained tobacco, were sweet, like Jazz Club for example. When I think of the scents of a jazz club in the early part of the 20th century with smoke wafting from people sitting in front of cocktail glasses, the last thing I think of is "sweet." But that is the "perfume"-y way of imagining booze. I think that's why most people in the reviews and statements are not finding the cognac in this fragrance. This is definitely not the syrupy-sweet cognac of Angels' Share Eau de Parfum, but it is absolutely an interpretation of cognac nonetheless.

It immediately hits you with smoky woods and a hint of sweetness, but not the kind of syrupy-ness you usually get from so-called boozy fragrances. A quiet touch of sugar to represent the caramelized bergamot garnish. Then we go immediately into the main body of the fragrance, which is basically a woody iris-tonka. The tonka simulates the slight sweetness of the distilled spirit while the woody notes are the main component of the "cognac" accord, the result of aging in oak barrels.

So far I'm only talking about the cognac component of this fragrance, but the imagery present in the marketing materials is a soiree at the court of Louis XV of France, which is where the iris comes in, representing the powdered wigs of the guests at such an event. I'm a sucker for this kind of "scent painting an image" kind of thing, so I do appreciate this scent.

It does have its downfalls; it is quite synthetic and "perfume"-y as another user mentioned. I think the use of ethyl maltol and airy aromachems takes away a bit from the beauty of this one. But the positives outweigh the negatives I think and this is not a bad one to consider if the idea of a slightly smoky wood-iris-tonka sounds good to you.

Edit: on successive wearings, getting a really annoying sweet synthetic note that I'm not a fan of. Lowering my rating.

A Woody Take On A Carmel-Esque Gourmand.
I’ve never encountered such a distinctive take on bergamot. The caramelized note greets you warmly, opening the door to the rest of the fragrance. A touch of aged dust mingles with boozy cognac, while orris ties everything together with a vintage ribbon. It’s the ballroom of an aristocrat’s palace. Powdered wigs bopping around and footsteps echoing across varnished parquet floors.

High Concept Nostalgia
This NAILS the vibe of being for a rococo era party girl thrust into a modern time. Ever since Madonna strutted onto the stage in full robe à la Française at the 1990 MTV awards, pop culture has been trying to bring Versailles to the modern zeitgeist to varying degrees of success. This fragrance is, in my opinion, a really great attempt at doing so on an olfactive level; It's boozy, sweet, and the antique wood really signals "aged in a barrel". It brings me back to the late 90s-early 2000s where reviving baroque aesthetics was Cool again. It's about to become my scent for fall/winter, and it lasted for about six to seven hours on my wrists which is pretty long for my liking (not that I'm complaining).

Similar to a favorite, Bowmakers, albeit embodying a jazz club instead of a lutier's studio. Good longevity. Cognac could be stronger

Boozy, dark iris florals, caramelized citrus, with a hint of cigarettes underneath. Unisex but feminine leaning. A fun statement piece.

Powdery and boozy. A total vibe. I loved this scent immediately and had to snag a full bottle. Perfect for fall 10/10

Very strong. And very perfume-y. Not my favorite - seems like some of the more popular designer ones to me although a little more complex.

Prominent iris, faint cognac, and antique wood. Has sweetness from the caramelized bergamot. Persistent undertone of stale cigarette smoke.

Quo vadis David? Smoky wood with synthetic iris bonfire. Is cognac hiding somewhere? The shine is crumbling in NYC…

Reign? More like the Emperor's New Clothes. You look in vain for cognac (or any spirits) here. Nice scent from 08/15 modern woods.

Unfortunately, it's just a shallow nice try compared to the much more complex "Japanese Whiskey | d'Annam." What a pity.

Sweet woody scent without much fuss, I can't detect any cognac, dusty-dry wood, okay but nothing extraordinary.

Feminine, sweet powdery sweat at first. Then synthetic woods, unisex & almost mainstream. The humanizing accord saves it from the Douglas shelf.
