A bit too brown for me
This fragrance is nice, but there is an edge to it that isn’t for me. It takes it out of the realm of my comfort zone. While I’m always looking to explore with fragrances, I do prefer to smell like something that feels comfortable to me.

I didn’t realize this was an orchid and coffee scent. I love orchid and I love coffee. I already have Maison ‘s Coffee Break though, and when it comes to a coffee scent, I much prefer that one.

I think there’s something matured in this fragrance. I wouldn’t call it dirty though. If I had to describe as a person it’s that girl…she’s not really a “guys girl” but she’s kind of androgynous and she chooses a seat by herself at the bar—fresh in from a cool summer evening, having smoked a Natural Spirit.

That’s the vibe I get and it’s just not me.

I misjudged you
It turns out that when I wrote my initial review I was right on the cusp of coming down with a really bad sinus infection that I assume messed up my sense of smell. I didn’t get a chance to sample it since then. When I got my full bottle of cognac reign I chose this as a sample just to see if maybe my mind had changed since then. It has.

This one opens with a blast of jasmine followed immediately by coffee flower and carrot- I assume this is what my sinus infection-addled mind read as “tootsie roll and cat urine”. This is followed by dried jasmine (a distinct smell from the initial fresh jasmine) and musk, which gives it a literally aged smell. I can imagine someone wearing this in one of those Internet cafes in the 90s where all of the decor was some shade of brown or orange.

Decent blended white/yellow floral with musk and woods, not much else
Sampling Brown Flowers, one of the more recent mainstay releases from the Brooklyn-based house of D.S. & Durga that it’s actually plausible to get a sample of, and it’s a fittingly-floral, mostly a mix of white and yellow floral vibes, quite pleasant, with a balanced woody and musky base, quite an agreeable, unisex floral scent that nonetheless leans stereotypically feminine and feels a bit unspecific, a pretty safe entry for the line that adds some variety without intriguing me too much, and its performance leaves a little bit to be desired while being decent overall.

Its concentration and retail pricing are the brand’s standard EDP and $300/210 for 100/50ml, respectively. It’s sold in the US via the house website as well as great boutiques like Ministry of Scent and Luckyscent.

Addictive substance
Now that summer is almost here, I like to bring out my fresh, citrusy fragrances. But I also like to have a light floral in between. When I first read the description of Brown Flowers, it somehow piqued my interest and I had to get a sample. When I sprayed it on for the first time, I thought well, quite a nice floral bouquet, but not very exciting. After a while, the freshness suddenly fades, the flowers wither, dry out, turn brown and then the delicate coffee flower peeps out and takes over, until finally a fine coffee aroma is added and the whole thing comes together in a grandiose finale to form a soft, elegant fragrance.
I don't think I've ever smelled another perfume with such a great finish. It's addictive!

Wet dried jasmine and orchid flowers dipped in leftover coffee, spiced with cedrat.

Conceptually works: nondescript flowers with a sweet, “brown” ripeness, sort of a transitional hue after Big Sur and Steamed Rainbow. Hmm

Just a boring white floral. No hint of coffee, earthiness or anything remotely interesting.
