Paris shrouded
The light direction probably comes from the sky itself. The sun came through punctually yesterday morning; at 10:30 a.m. for the opening of the barrier: "L'Arc de Triomphe - Wrapped" looks like an ice sculpture at this moment (says a German tourist who is there). But its color changes with the train of clouds.
A walkable work of art Christo and his Jeanne-Claude have given Paris. And not only Paris; here again the world is a guest!
And in the distance freezes, clearly visible, the Eiffel Tower: where is his dress?
I admit it honestly: I was not very interested in the wrapping of the Berlin Reichstag until - yes! until I could follow the progress of the wrapping from the balcony: first one tower was wrapped, then the second and so on. The dome came only later on it!
And on how much incomprehension and head shaking I met with my explanation: "I must look at that! What a folk festival was offered to us; or did we celebrate it from us?
Each evening at the beginning of that wonderful summer of 1995 was unique; no two were alike.
Now the Paris Arc de Triomphe is ready covered and for 16 days (until October 3) a posthumous gift of two extraordinary artists to this city, which can always surprise: that Paris probably never forgets!
At the metro station "George V.", still in good view of this glittering work of art, in parallel, the headquarters of Christian Dior was covered with white plastic film.
As a matter of course, passers-by walk up to it and touch the designer clothes printed on it.
Well, let's face it: who wouldn't? - "I touched a Dior model!"
"My dear Christian, your clothes really have a New Look!" enthused the legendary Carmel Snow, editor-in-chief of "Harper's Baazar," at the first of his many fashion shows on Feb. 12, 1947.
Instead of necessary clothing made of potato sacks, horse blankets and everything available, Christian Dior suddenly covered women in quantities of supple, glittering fabric, thus also revealing what had disappeared for so long: grace and femininity!
The "Tulip" line that emerged from this show shortly thereafter became wearable fashion: it celebrated the resurrection of women in this so hopeful time.
So it can not be surprising that François Demachy also included this, so important event in the life of Christian Dior in his fragrance series "La Collection Couturier Parfumeur" under the name "New Look 1947".
"New Look 1947" is feminine; like the bar costume (the iconic model of the New Look), this fragrance garment immediately attracts attention: just by the radiant fragrance white of rich jasmine and elegant rose. Ylang-ylang may not be missing as a decorative element.
This bright fragrant glow is still charmingly underlined by tuberose; but it also leads into the subtle, smoky-warm world of benzoin and creamy vanilla.
Iris with her powder puff appears with me only now; as if she wants to make sure that everything about this creation is as it should be, to then give the fragrance the final touch.
This, yet very floral fragrance creation unfolds on my skin like the flattering skirt of the eponymous fashion line: rich and generous, it plays around me as an elegant companion for some beautiful hours; always lightly iridescent like precious fabric.
Thus, "New Look 1947" is once again a composition with which Monsieur Demachy continues to tell the fragrance story Christian Dior started by him.
In its fine powdery floral dress certainly not a fragrance that appeals to everyone.
But "flower women" like me will love him; even if my "time of roses" is already for some years past.
So I land ("Finally!" some will say) but again at my starting point:
Paris still knows how to delight!
It veils or reveals: that depends solely on the viewpoint of the beholder.
"New Look 1947" as a fragrance attracts in any case!
Messieurs: À votre Santé!
