Gentleman's gem!
Another fragrance I misjudged at first – it may seem a bit conventional, it isn’t really. Edition (vintage version) is a really pleasant, extremely refined and quite modern gentleman’s scent decidedly belonging to the classiest “barbershop” family, but at the same time connecting to several different inspirations. There’s some clove tobacco and rubbery/leather-ish notes that remind me of some old dark Italian leather fougères like Ferré for Man or Krizia Moods (but with a far echo of vintage Bel Ami too), there’s quite some bold spicy nutmeg which seems anticipating stuff like Cacharel pour Homme and Cacharel Nemo, and there’s finally a really classic and smooth citrus-lavender-mossy/woody structure that brings Edition back to a timeless “barbershop” realm. Spicier and fresher at first, darker and woodier (mostly vetiver and nutmeg) on the drydown, with a silky “fil rouge” of gentle leather and flowers (I definitely get carnation and rose) providing a really palpable feel of mannered luxury and sophistication. So don’t expect any “powerhouse” for sure – this is, or was, probably one of the most elegant British fragrances around. And quite complex too, but the final result on skin is extremely wearable, easy-going, versatile and most of all, exceedingly pleasant. Smoky and spicy, slightly dark, perfectly suitable for both formal occasions and daytime informal settings, the kind of “old school distinguished stuff” getting repeatedly ripped off today by brands like Puredistance, Roja Dove and Clive Christian. Really good.

Spice and class
This is a great addition to a man’s wardrobe. The unique bottle matches the scent. To me it has a really gentlemanly character. Kind of like a room full of antique mahogany furniture filled with books, a piano, and green and amber tabletop lamps. A room with some deep thinking men who’ve just had a late night conversation. One of them steps out to smoke a clove cigarette and a bit of the smoke wafts in the air. Not too austere, or unapproachable. More confident, comforting, and distinct. Signature scent worthy. 8.5/10

Fantastic gentleman's workhorse
Got a free bottle from my dad, who purchased roughly 6 bottles upon hearing it was discontinued long ago. He has used 2, and then he had the thought that he bought fakes and hasn't touched the collection since, which has been sitting at home for ages now.

While I may be misguidedly reviewing a fake, this is the platonic ideal of a gentleman's fragrance, perhaps because my dad wore it through my childhood. My mom also said that she met my dad wearing this one and she was extremely attracted to him (gross, but also, great insight).

It is classy, with a sexy edge. Fresh in the beginning some citrus punch, with a serious dry down of tonka and cedar, very prominent. It doesn't dry down as fast as others for me. Admittedly doesn't last as long as I wish it did (could be the fake) but also I have had similar experiences with other fresh colognes.

Who said it smells like ashtray?

Stage Victory 1934 - 1984 - 2024
This year, the anniversaries are piling up!
Just as we were celebrating Grandpa "Dunhill for Men / Classic Blend (Cologne) | Dunhill," the next invitation fluttered into the mailbox a bit late. Just in time for the end of 2024!

The local smart one is now forty revolutions around the sun old.
Strangely good-looking, a bit of a successful patina, and fit as a fiddle.
He continues to exude the essence of his decade: a charming hedonism that has been and still is meticulously cultivated, just like profitable investments. Unlike any other generation before, many of their graying gentlemen still lift weights, pay attention to balanced diets, pose fashionably in tune with the times, and have retained their ironic sense of humor.
Keyword: killer smile.

The invitation was printed on watermark paper.
Classic font, almost Roman.
Cryptically in the style of the 1980s, one is invited to the exclusive celebration.
It reads as follows.

“Interpretation of the Interpretation”

Let us once again let the magic of 1984 work and get chic for the upcoming evening.

Sizzle!

An explosion of aromatic waves jolts all senses awake.
Neurotransmitters go crazy in the brain like amphetamines.
So strong that even the citrus notes fade away.

Oversized herbs burst with a desire for recognition.
Greenish, sun-tanned sage duels with warm nutmeg blossom.
Mace exudes an elegantly floral undertone compared to its sister nutmeg, yet remains warm and brown-spicy.
The duel takes place on a fougère base, which the referee lavender sportily acknowledges.

But that should only be the beginning.

A herb-floral fanfare celebrates the competitions.
The rose geranium stands out with all its bulky greenish power, a tried-and-true repellent against summer insect plagues.
Its loud droning drives the herbs to give their all.
The rosy aspects get a bit lost in the noise.
The shy, powdery carnation merely plays the role of a claqueur and adapts to the herbaceousness.

But where would the English sporting spirit of fairness be?
Here, the civilizing vein of the violet comes into play.
Cooling.
A sweetish bloom, so characteristic of the 1980s.
Like no other component of the decade, it will underscore the prevailing coolness.
It unites white and greenish nuances in its analytical coolness and is the perfect link between lavender and vetiver.

And the exotic grass forms the green lawn of the sports field.
Suddenly, it becomes entire golf courses, which replace but do not completely displace the herbaceous games.
As if flying over the magnificent landscapes of the Lake District, comprehending the cool waters of the lakes in their entirety.

On the edge, near the shore, podiums made of resinous wood await the winner.

But can there even be a winner here?
Isn't it more about the game itself?

This question was perfectly staged in the video for Heaven 17 - Let me go, two years before the launch of "Dunhill Edition (Eau de Toilette) | Dunhill," in 1982.
The painful state of the zeitgeist at that time, caught between stagnant tradition and reinvention.
Dunhill succeeded amidst the societal transformation of the Thatcher era.
A tribute to the dynastic bottle of 1934, this time ice-cold matte.
Grandpa's chypre gave way to a bombastic fougère full of spice and green vetiver.

The continuation was mastered, the blockade resolved, just as it was back in 1934. The economic depression following the stock market crash of 1929 required courage and foresight.
That is what makes a dynasty.

But now, off to the gala!

Black tuxedo, silky sash, obligatory bow tie.
Very 1934.

If possible, blow-dried, with a side part covering one eye, otherwise slicked back hair.
Longer hair elegantly tied in a daring Japanese knot.
Jet-black aviator sunglasses.
Cool 1984.

And now the party's motto.
Wang Chung - Dance Hall Days (Johnson Sommerset Remix) under cool light cones in the dark dance hall.
The end of 2024.

Please grin maliciously!

Fresh ferns on a summer morning. Nutmeg and cloves from a winter dish. They make a beautiful versatile marriage.

Is it just me, or does it seem like this bottle could use an update? Dunhill should give it better packaging than dollar store splash.

Other than the longevity, I really enjoy wearing this. A tad spicy, a tad woody and a tad of vetiver. Manly and pleasant. Safe for office.

A gentleman that seems older than he actually is. A very green opening, fir-centered too me (no nutmeg?). Pleasant while it lasts.

A beautiful fougere with a prominent nutmeg note that gives it a slightly oriental touch.

The combination of mace and fir is original and very enjoyable. Floral and grassy notes decorate the whole without being intrusive.

Nice soapy scent. Not bad at all. But, be careful with the sprayer. Do not overspray or it will become cloying.

Fougère with class. Distinctly citrusy, then beautifully swaying between flowers and clary sage. The balsamic base is dreamy.
