The Urban Smellscape Of The British Capital
There is a distinct and unique smell in the London Underground. Not the sweaty smell of the cramped carriages, but the whiff of the earthy engines that hover across the platform as they approach the underground trains approximating the station. What makes London smell like London? Or any city for that matter? There is a heady aroma of car exhaust, fuel and dust hanging over the nostrils of Londoners, and perhaps unsurprisingly. But not far behind, the smell of the natural world - flowers, plants, trees and grass - envelops our noses.

Dunhill London smells so good, modern, bitterly sweet, something unusual in between a fougère, aromatic, and oriental. It is a little powdery, but far tamer than most in the oriental category with vanilla and tonka as the two leading ingredients. I have never really heard of this cologne until I came across the other Dunhill offers and decided to try a few things that I've seen around. It is a cheapy, and I blindly bought it for less than 20 euro. It smells so great, and it's an easy step to add to my morning routine. The fragrance captures all the good smells into a cologne.
To begin with, the packaging is top-notch, the box has a modern Union Jack splash colours style printed on a silver background. And the bottle is well-designed, surprising, minimal, squared, the heavy glass that is grooved at the left and right side showing a pleasant optical illusion. The juice has a light grey nuance that leads towards green, a Card Room green that takes its name from the colour often used in gaming rooms in the Victorian period and is incomprehensibly "masculine" in appearance, and is in line with the London atmosphere. A heavy metal cap completes the outfit, hiding the massive and generous sprayer. There all the promising for something good.

Right off the bat, London greets me with a sour and aromatic blast, fresh, full of fruity and spicy nuances. There is a pinch of mentholated cardamom that accompanies the brilliant bergamot and a sweet red apple juice. It is the smell of the fresh air on your face when you leave your home in the early morning after you had your breakfast, and walk toward downtown.

As London continues its journey, it offers us a heart full of flowers with green accents. The dark note of geranium leaves intertwines with the more delicate tones of the rosebuds and the brighter ones of the indolic nocturnal jasmine. However, here we find a masculine floral, there are no too sweet, honeyed accents, but a tangy, spicy, almost herbaceous bouquet.

And then comes the dry down. The initial fruity accord tones down, and I firmly get the musky and woody aspects, white musk and sandal are overstanding. Brittle patchouli adds a smidgen of earthiness and avoids stickiness, whereas roasted tonka and lovely soft vanilla keep the base a bit creamy, not sweetish, just fluffy and spicy. When the tonka fully arrives, it makes London a bit too powdery and creamy, but still wearable very delicately that may not appeal to everyone. Still, this is pretty decent stuff all things considered.

Ultimately, London has a zesty kind of freshness with a warmer floral but light powdery finish that is not too overpowering or too woody or musky like some of the colognes out there. Maybe it's not unique, I caught a few similarities with Montblanc's Presence, not a clone of one another but the same vibe, although I found it very pleasant and ideal for these autumn days. The shades of the perfume blend very well with the cold air outside and the warmth inside the house. Perhaps too heavy for hot summer, and not too heavy for chilly winter. The sillage is close to my arm and does not project too far, it is not intrusive, and the longevity is moderate, it holds up for half a day, I would say. All these features make it ideal for the white-collar, to wear to go to the office, perhaps reapplying it after lunch, but also at the weekend for shopping, to go out with friends, or for an informal lunch away from home. It can also be suitable for a late afternoon, an aperitif, but it's a little too weak for a night out, clubbing, or a social evening. To me, London is a decent fragrance at an affordable price.

This review bases upon a 100ml (3.4 fl. oz.) I own since November 2020.

As a student, Dunhill London smelled like luxury to me
If I remember correctly, Dunhill London was the second or third perfume I owned as a teenager - alongside the timeless classic Cool Water. I first encountered Dunhill London about 8 years ago on a cruise. At that time, this perfume was available for purchase in the onboard shop. I had no idea about perfumes back then, but I simply liked the name "London" because I love the city and thought the fragrance might be good too. From the very first sniff, I was in love; the price was affordable, and it was purchased. However, a few months later, while traveling again with the scent in my luggage, my Dunhill London bottle broke in my suitcase, probably during the flight handling, leaving quite a mess. My clothes and suitcase smelled of the fragrance for up to three weeks.

Naturally, I was quite sad about the loss and had to reorder. The scent has always left me with a feeling of classic elegance. In terms of style, Dunhill London has always had a certain Armani and Hugo Boss vibe for me, which I still feel today. Although I couldn't quite figure out which notes it contained, I didn't care at all. I knew I would smell good with it, and different from others my age.

Even today, I feel that sense of elegance when I wear Dunhill London. Fruity-synthetic (perhaps) green apple in the opening, which lingers for a while. Along with a slight oriental spiciness and citrus freshness that hints at cardamom, this rounded scent offers an excellent combination. After about three-quarters of an hour, the perfume tends to take on floral tones. Definitely white-floral. Unfortunately, the fragrance fades too quickly, softly and elegantly. To be honest, I can't perceive sandalwood in the base, but I do catch a hint of vanilla and maybe a bit of tonka.

The longevity of the perfume on my skin is a maximum of 5 hours, and the sillage is moderate. I wish the performance were stronger; this scent truly deserves it! But I don't want to complain too much at this price, as the scent DNA is great and will appeal more to younger men. In my opinion, Dunhill London is best suited for autumn or spring and can be worn casually or a bit more elegantly. I give it a recommendation to buy, and even with a blind purchase, you can't go too wrong. Only those looking for something with more performance will unfortunately be disappointed here. Associations with often rainy England or the city of London do not arise with this scent DNA. For that, something completely different would need to be created. The perfume would need to be a bit more old-school with a modern twist. However, Dunhill has created something modern-timeless here.

As a little conclusion to the story: I had grown so fond of Dunhill London back then that I used it as my "Scent of the Evening" for my graduation ball. The bottle from that time still stands in my closet :)

Halboriental Fougère
Since I really liked "Background," I took a chance on "Dunhill London" as a blind buy - it's not expensive after all - and of course compared it to its reference. It is clear that it is also a typical haloriental Fougère scent with this sweet Tonka fixation. I can also find a certain similarity with "Must pour Homme" (Cartier), "Roma Uomo" (Laura Biagiotti), "Brût" (Fabergé), or "Xeryus Rouge" (Givenchy).

The top note is characteristically herbal (lavender, anise) with fresh lime and pineapple, followed by a floral heart note of geranium, heliotrope, and orange blossom, transitioning into musk, tonka, and vanilla. Compared to the elegant high-end fragrances and testosterone bombs of its kind, "London" comes across as rather uncomplicated, buddy-like, and youthful, which definitely has its charm.

Conclusion: A wonderful scent, more suited to young, smart, metrosexual men than to conservative older gentlemen who want to emphasize their status in the workplace. It's a shame that this unpretentious fragrance is sold in such an ugly bottle and such an off-putting packaging - we should definitely work on that.

No Rain Showers in Sight
What Dunhill has to do with London, I’m not quite sure. The scent is not that cool and rainy or flowing at all. It is much too gentle and warm for that. A men’s perfume that is not too angular and lacks a strong character. When I imagine London and think back to my trip, this perfume is totally inappropriate for a tour of this city.

The beginning is very cardamom-like, with almost no trace of bergamot. Just a slight hint of apple mixes in, but this soon fades, as after just a few minutes, the jasmine settles heavily in the scent. However, it quickly rises from the depths and makes the fragrance a bit fresh and extremely light. A floral men’s perfume, very daring! I find it a bit too light and not as distinctive as most men’s perfumes are. I like it very much when I’m working or when I quickly grab something from the city. The heart note is very jasmine-dominated. The rose only makes a brief appearance in the perfume and quickly takes its leave. Only when the sandalwood settles after not even two hours and weaves its threads into the perfume does it lose its freshness and become warmer, woodier, and significantly more pleasant. It is enveloped in smooth vanilla. Warm air paired with patchouli and a subtle tonka bean. Not a scent that overwhelms my senses, but rather keeps me grounded and takes away all the edges and corners.

The longevity for me is about four hours. So not really long.
The bottle is okay, not particularly handy, but it could be worse. The color is a plus point. Extremely calm and soothing. A delicate blue that reminds me of my younger years. I recommend the perfume more to young men, as it doesn’t have a mature image and simply suits younger people better.

To snuggle warmly, it fits, over it a chic black coat, just out for a bit, and that’s it... a warm rain shower would be perfect to get this stagnant, warm perfume flowing a bit - but I see no rain showers in sight... More flow and more kick - then it would have something of London, even if just a little.

London Calling
As a free perfume received in exchange for a few samples, you can’t really complain. You know what they say about a gift horse... but this one leans more towards a dressage horse - an absolutely usable, youthful fragrance. I can’t say how it compares to Background, but at least now I have a rough idea of the direction this legend took. Maybe I’ll get to experience Background in a test someday. Until then, Dunhill London reminds me of a mix between the in-house Desire and V Pour Homme by Valentino.

It’s a fruity powder cocktail. Apple mixed with vanilla powder. A true casual fragrance and at most usable as a complement, but it doesn’t smell bad. Very sweet (from the cardamom), somewhat floral (for me more rosy/sharp). But the heart note doesn’t stand in the way, bulky or even feminine. The scent is cheerful, modern, spontaneous, and zesty.

Bottle: I like the encasings on the sides. Handy and good sprayer, but rather unremarkable.
Sillage: medium, gray area.
Longevity: okay with 6 hours.

A successful alternative to the discontinued perfumes. But I had hoped for something different from Background, simply something more... but maybe it will surprise me positively after all. Dunhill London certainly represents the young, multicultural UK fittingly and excellently!

A fresh leavening, a floral bouquet, a slightly sweet heart and delicate wood base come together in a victorious and tuneful whole. Awesome!

Not sad that this it was discontinued. I bought it years ago for its British cache, but I always found the scent more unusual than pleasing.

Gentle, sweet fruit cocktail that lacks the character and excitement of the city it’s named after.

It has something to do with Background, but only distantly. BG was spicy, this one is more fresh. Unfortunately, not an alternative for Background fans.

Pleasant, fresh vanilla note, not sticky at all. Still unique and unfortunately underrated or overlooked. A blind buy candidate :-)

Sweet, fruity & spicy at the start. In the heart note sweet & spicy, not floral. Sweet also in the base with a subtle wood note. Barely any vanilla.

A scent that feels like a second skin in the truest sense. Not a sillage monster, but simply beautifully understated.

Slight resemblance to Background Eau de Toilette but extremely diluted. Apple and later vanilla come through nicely.
