Hidden Gem Nobody Talks About
I've always had a soft spot for skyscrapers, but I had never seen a real one until 2003, October to be precise. The start of a new global business project had required my presence in Princeton, New Jersey. Hence, I had travelled over the weekend to visit Manhattan before leaving for work on Monday morning. I remember staying in a shabby hotel to save the company money, with a tiny room where the King Size bed filled it three-quarters full. The window overlooked a blind cavity. A shock, but I didn't care. I was in Central Park. I was in New York. I remember spending the weekend wandering up and down the avenues, from uptown to downtown, moving from one neighbourhood to another without stopping, taking a myriad of photos looking at the sky, visiting the Empire State Building with a breathtaking view across the state of New York and beyond. The last time I was a couple of years ago, this time on vacation, the summer before the pandemic broke out, and the effect was always fascinating, impressive, astounding. And maybe it's just my passion for skyscrapers that led me to collect Elizabeth Arden's 5th Avenue series. I started with the classic and then bought all the flankers, one after the other, up to this last jewel that nobody talks about. Yes, because the bottle looks like a skyscraper, and the glass is as dark as night for the Royale flanker. It captures the mystery of Manhattan at nightfall.

Unrestrained and gloomy. The oud immediately makes its presence felt. The scent begins with a burst of lightly burnt raspberry liqueur on the face. It is an alcoholic, chocolaty, and medicinal accord, reminiscent of raspberry cough syrups, the fruity ones, the good ones. The pyramid note does not mention cocoa or chocolate, so this probably comes from patchouli, which often takes on a chocolate tinge. I can't tell if there is any bergamot in there because of the syrupy accord and a touch of sweet orange blossom shyly oozing. The abundant, thick, and greasy scent makes me doubt whether to wear it during the day or for the office - it could overwhelm my co-workers.

After a few minutes, it turns into a glorious smell. The leathery fragrance comes with a touch of incense. The accord of incense and patchouli exudes exotic craftsmanship and sensuality. The notes come in slowly, almost on tiptoe. On my skin, the heart remains balsamic, and the dryness of cedarwood and cypriol does not turn out as expected. Maybe it needs more time and more wear. The first impression never captures all the details. Afterwards, it doesn't change much as it dries. I observe that the patchouli warms it up a bit.

After about an hour, the fragrance fades, and the previous notes merge into the hypnotic accord of amber oud, synthetic but strangely good, slightly healing as mentioned above. Oud resin isn't alone but features smooth suede cuffs and clean mosses. Suede, yes, but not very leathery or animal for my nose and a soft flower that I still can't place, perhaps the opening orange blossom. The smell of delicate skin comes from the labdanum, the cistus or rock rose. I'm pretty sure I've smelled something similar before, in my collection or a shop. However, the oud here is used in a gourmand way, not mixed with spiced saffron or floral rose. To me, it smells like a leather jacket the morning after being worn on a romantic evening. The whole composition is gentle, with a musky undertone. It's that wonderfully quirky, almost salty variant of moss that I'm in love with.

Ambiguous. Brilliant. Mesmeric. Perfume is all those adjectives and more. Suede, chocolatey patchouli and liqueur with the addition of caramelized ripe raspberries are a pretty accurate description of what this fragrance is for me. Yes, the top notes are a little shrill, but wow, once it dries a little, it's so good. The cool evenings and nights of October, and generally autumn, are the perfect time to wear it. Dare with it to go to a party, out in the open, to dinner, to the theatre, or the cinema. I'm not sure about the performance yet; maybe wearing it a few times will give me a better idea. Sure, there is leather, incense and spices, but the overall result is not a manly fragrance, even if nothing is missing to be worn by a man, without hesitation or resentment. This perfume is ideal if you are looking for a light oriental, not extremely powerful, not so sweet and without the typical oriental damask rose. Its price is low, ridiculous, but it smells expensive, like a priceless Tom Ford perfume. My nose smells pretty niche, and I would never say it's Elizabeth Arden! And I'm surprised nobody talks about it.

I base the review on a 75ml bottle I have owned since June 2021.

Smell royal and pay little!
Once again, I must champion... affordable fragrances. I consciously want to avoid saying "cheap," but rather emphasize that in the case of 5th Avenue Royale, nothing smells primitive or cheap at all. This scent is no fake news, no cheap crap, no counterfeit, but what the Americans call "great value for money."
5th Avenue Royale starts off slightly fruity, but really just slightly. Raspberries are mentioned in the pyramid. They smell different to me, but supposedly they are evoked here. I think more of dark chocolate with red berry compote. Once this note settles, patchouli and cedarwood follow, which together come across as finely spicy. Yes, there is a hint of oud, but it remains very discreet. After some time, when the base note becomes noticeable, you can detect a bit of leather. This also sounds subdued and does not take center stage, but you can recognize it in the chorus of other aromatic players. I must especially mention musk here. My daughter actually suspected that I was wearing a flanker of Narciso... apparently, a lot of musk comes through to others when they smell the fragrance from a certain distance.
What remains is the impression of a slightly oriental, warm, only lightly sweet quality fragrance that absolutely does not need to hide behind much more expensive counterparts. Not your usual Fruitchouli.
Normally not a big fan of Elizabeth Arden, I am positively surprised this time. For little money, you get a solid winter companion that envelops you in a warm embrace, without being intrusive or overly candied (that’s a word my mother likes to use... - I don’t usually use it, but here it fits) or even "over-the-top."
There may be people who are lucky enough to spritz themselves every day with their Chanel Les Exclusifs or their Clive Christian or Roja Dove. Those with a much tighter budget who still want to smell good should definitely try this Arden fragrance here.

Smooth Operator
How much I had looked forward to you, for the comments and reviews were so enticing. You also come elegantly in your black and gold presentation, your slender "flacon shape," noble, and seemingly easy to handle.

I want to engage with you, to like you and welcome you. However, what is this? You show yourself from your most artificial side, scratching, biting, stinging. After several attempts, I am sure, it will not work out between us. The separation seems inevitable.

But, I will keep you, maybe ... who knows? Perhaps there will still be something between us, a spark of hope remains. A few days ago, I wanted to make one last attempt. One last time.
A small chance for us two. And suddenly you transform, enchanting my nose with raspberry sweetness, the finest smooth suede soothes my mind. A hint of patchouli, amber, and musk, very gentle and harmonious in tone. Now you show nobility, and I am captivated. You caress me, seduce me, and now I don't want to let you go.

Stay ...

What? There's no tea in here??
Hello you perfumed freaks and welcome to a new comment from me :D
Today it's about 5th Avenue Royale by Elizabeth Arden, a brand that I actually got to know for only one reason.

Well, can you guess it already? Of course you can. Because even though Elizabeth Arden should have a lot of other fragrances, you immediately think of the "Green Tea" fragrance line, of which there are now a total of 20 flankers alongside the original Green Tea (yes, I counted them painstakingly here in the Parfumo database, but it’s quite possible that I miscounted… :D). Of course, most of them have been discontinued by now, but new flankers are constantly being released, so you're always well supplied with green tea scents! And since I’m known to be totally into tea fragrances in general, it was only a matter of time before I would come across these Green Tea scents, right? Right! Phew, now I’ve rambled on for a whole paragraph about how I got into this fragrance line!

But there are, as I said, other fragrances that have nothing to do with tea, which doesn’t mean that these fragrances are any less worth testing. 5th Avenue also seems to be quite a popular line from this brand, although I must admit that I don’t know a single fragrance from it yet, and the Royale here is my first scent from it. Well then, let’s see how it smells. Although Royale sounds quite British, and don’t the English also like tea?? Hmmmm... :D
Whatever, whatever… I’ll start sniffing first!

The Scent:
The scent starts with light leather and oud, along with a lot of sweet raspberry. The leather quickly takes a back seat, while the oud becomes stronger quite rapidly. Pretty soon, green-earthy patchouli joins in, which also begins to smell quite intense.
Although the scent starts off quite fruity, it quickly becomes warmer and softer, which must be due to the oud, as well as the slightly clean musk that can be detected from time to time. The raspberry (or rather raspberry liqueur by now) is still noticeable, which I find quite nice. Otherwise, it remains primarily with oud and patchouli (along with the raspberry). Well, actually it stays that way until the end, but that’s okay, as the scent is consistently quite pleasant this way!

The Sillage and Longevity:
The sillage is quite okay. However, the scent starts off somehow more bombastic than it actually is, as the initial sillage of the top note quickly dissipates. But still, the scent has a good projection and is therefore noticeable for a while. The longevity is also good, allowing you to perceive the scent well for eight to nine hours.

The Bottle:
The bottle is rectangular, black, and tall. On the front, there’s a black label with a golden frame and (presumably tactile) floral patterns. The gilded cap visually resembles a column cap and somewhat reminds me of the caps of Tom Ford bottles. A beautiful bottle.

Okay,… despite Royale in the scent name, there’s not a trace of tea in this fragrance (…damn!), so I must have interpreted too much into it earlier. But that’s okay, as the scent has turned out quite nice anyway, and tea doesn’t always have to be in fragrances (oh my God, did I really just say that???).

Yes, the scent is warm and powdery with a well-measured (and thus not annoying) agarwood or oud, sweet-fruity raspberry, a bit of leather, and patchouli as the main fragrance notes. Since I only knew the tea scents from Elizabeth Arden and no other fragrance from this brand until now, it feels a bit unusual for me to smell such a scent from them, but it was worth it, as the scent is very nice and smells even better for the price than one would expect, especially since you can’t detect anything synthetic. It’s good for daytime wear but also suitable for going out. Scent-wise, I would use it in almost all seasons except summer. In my opinion, it’s definitely worth a test and could surprise you with what you get to sniff here, provided, of course, that you like the scent of raspberry, as it is quite intense here.

But how can one not like raspberry? Apart from the taste, the scent seems so delicious and cute and… oh never mind… I won’t gush about it now. Not again, so I’ll just say briefly: Go out, test it, and enrich your surroundings with your wonderful, delicious, and sweet aura, he he :D

So, that’s it. Have a nice evening and see you next time :)

The Ever-Changing New York
I have never been there, but I know some authentic reports about this city. For some, it's a monster, a synonym for "big city" par excellence. For others, it's a source of inspiration, the "American Dream" and a "metropolis for culture and fashion." The opinions are often far apart.
But what I gather from these different thoughts is: Everything is New York. And yet not exclusively.
It is a city in constant change. Recently, it has also been very engaged in environmental protection. In the form of "green roof mania" (super!!), as well as the expansion of parks and trees in the downtown area (also super!!) and much more.
At the same time, it is a center of fashion and "fragrance culture," with leading houses like Estee Lauder and also Elizabeth Arden. The latter has already released several tributes to New York. All as diverse as the city itself. The classic "5th Avenue" from the eighties, a "real" perfume, floral, well-made, alongside several other 5th Avenue scents (hardly any resemble each other) and now "5th Avenue Royale," which smells almost entirely different.
The focus is on woods, spices, and herbs. (likely a reference to what was said above). Trees create new spaces.
A tribute to all the "parks" of this world? And to the spirit of the times, which hopefully lasts a long time.
A lovingly composed fragrance with fine humor, which surprises me with its unsweetened fullness. And flowers? Not a chance? I wouldn't say so. A rose and orange blossoms in the background provide a gentle "forest atmosphere" and a soft presence that is very reminiscent of "Mother Nature."
And it reminds us that New York is not just a "monster," but a big city in perpetual change, now for the better....

Very boozy and dark fruity, with a strong cocoa note coming through now and then. For me, patchouli dominates in the base.

I think it’s so awesome! Woody with oud and moderately sweet, warm fruity, really very pleasant. Nothing bothers me about it. A warm summer scent!
