Earthiness And Confidence To Be Who You Are, Not Who The Perfume Wants You To Be
The sky is clear, with little clouds. I'm sitting on my deck. Indian Summer is here. The air is fresh and crisp. Watching the breezes blow the long grasses at the edge of the lake, I see Mallards in the distance frolicking. The grill is on and I can smell the gingered rice simmering. I'm relaxed and life is simple. That's what Arden Beauty brings to mind.
I picked this up for a mere few bucks today so I figured I'd give it a try. A very comforting, comfortable scent that I'd like to wear on week-ends relaxing when I'm not rushed. Or out to a quaint lunch or antique shopping. Arden Beauty is a mature scent, no sweet notes here, no fruity nuances either. Gentle wood scents come into play eventually but the true beauty of this perfume is the ginger and the rice. It's absolutely delicious.
There is an earthiness that I enjoy in this fragrance, a sense that makes me feel at home with myself. I don't have to be anyone else. I'm not worrying about how sexy this perfume is, or how sultry, or if it is too sweet for anyone's taste. It brings me in to my own personal space, allowing me to reflect and enjoy my own scent mingling with this perfume.
When I smell new-mown grass and walk in it, it's a delightful experience for the soul. It's exhilarating. You inhale the fresh aromas of the cut grass around you as you walk in it and your mind cleanses your soul. Arden Beauty has that green freshness ability to exhilarate you and make you at peace with yourself to be you and no one else but you. For those of you that are confident and ensconced in your maturity level to accept yourself for who you are, this is a fragrance to wear when you just want to kick back, laugh and relax and be who you are.
Simple, elongated, rectangle bottle says it all. Good longevity with a beautiful radiance.

Good Mood All Day Long
The sky is clear, with tiny clouds. I am resting on a bridge. And the Italian spring has arrived with fresh and crisp air. Watching the breeze blowing over the tall grass by the river, I see mallards in the distance playing around. I return home, and I can smell the ginger basmati rice boiling over low heat in the air. I am relaxed, and life is smiling at me. This is what ardenbeauty remembers.

You cannot imagine my surprise this morning when I opened my page on Parfumo to set the perfume of the day, and I discovered the nose master Antoine Lie created ardenbeauty. Yes, a big surprise because in recent days, I have reviewed some of his creations for the niche house One of Those (aka nu_be), and now I'm wearing this fairy tale, which wraps me lightly like light butterfly wings made of rice paper. At first, after just smelling the dispenser, I thought that it would be a variation of E.A. 5th Avenue, which I love. Still, then I tried it this morning and was immediately rewarded with a burst of beautiful fresh flowers, followed a few minutes later by delicious aquatic and then musky notes. Not overly sweet notes here, no fruity undertones. In the end, delicate wood scents come into play, but this scent's genuine beauty is the lilies and rice. It is absolutely divine.

The jewel unfolds with a green and spicy bergamot, not too acidic, instead of similar to a dewy morning drizzle. It oozes a familiar and unique note of steaming Basmati rice to complete this mystical phase, so calming and soothing. An aroma that makes you want spring. It has that cool, relaxing aquatic vibe that luxury spas have.

As for the heart, announcing itself as a bouquet, let me clarify a couple of things. I have read some reviews that mention a noticeable smell of ginger and rhubarb. None of them are present here. Instead, there's a sweet white ginger lily flower (Hedychium coronarium), or sweet snow, with its lily-like solid fragrance. And a pink, smelly love or hate rubrum lily, or stargazer lily, a fantastic variety of lily sought after for its fragrance and late summer flowering. The curved hanging flowers are white and crimson and are among the most fragrant. The ginger lily has a unique scent, both the leaves and the rhizome and the roots, so typical that the scent immediately transports you to the atmosphere of Asian markets, so floral, mysterious, exotic. It is one of the essential ingredients in Southeast Asian cooking, and it is the fleshy rhizome's root that resembles ginger. It has a euphoric, aphrodisiac, and even intoxicating effect. That said, those two fragrant and exotic flowers share the heart with a very watery lotus flower and a golden sunset orchid with rosy and powdery accents.

Creamy, non-dominant Indian sandalwood, white amber that remains clean, smooth, and adherent to the skin, not at all resinous, and a plethora of sensual musk warms the dry-down. The blend of those relaxing notes and chords makes me think of a stroll along the beach. All you can hear is the slow, steady sound of low tide. The sunset is warm, but the breeze is cool, and the precious white stones shine wet on the beach. Everything is quiet, and there is no obsession in your mind.

It is so light and crisp, such a good day perfume, definitely for the springtime. It lasts for a suitable length of time on me, almost all business day. The fragrance has a slightly spicy hint that gives a deep warmth to my skin. A small spray lasts for a few hours, so it has excellent longevity. The bottle is a simple design, tall but chunky feel glass bottle with the traditional gold and red themed spritz and lid that every E.A. fan knows. What an underrated magnificence! Arden Beauty is certainly not dull, and the cost is low. However, the scent is highly stunning and addicting! It is undoubtedly a woody and spicy green musky fragrance with a relative sweetness, never suffocating or cloying. Ultimately, if you are fond of C.K. Truth or Issey Miyake l'Eau, I am sure you will fall in love with ardenbeauty. I think this is one of the E.A. scents that is underrated, actually.

More Vagueness Than Beauty
After many abortive attempts to come to terms with SUNFLOWERS (my sister had given me a bottle, and I wanted so much to be able to wear it....), I basically gave up on Elizabeth Arden. Something about that fragrance simply did not sit well with me, and the memories remain marked enough that, years later, I still approach the EA house only with trepidation.

The good news is that ARDEN BEAUTY is not a scrubber and does not induce feelings of malaise or anxiety in me. The disappointing news is that BEAUTY would be better named INOFFENSIVE or maybe CALM. To my nose, this is a very vague composition. I honestly couldn't even guess what olfactory group it was supposed to belong to. This creation seems to me closer to a weak aquatic than a floral green. I believe that I smell something tea-like and lotus, but those are the only significant notes that I can sort of identify. There is a light musky quality to this fragrance as well. Actually, I think that the best name would be VAGUE.

ARDEN BEAUTY is okay, but nothing that I have any real desire to wear. On the other hand, I don't mind if other people wear it, which is of course an accomplishment of sorts. (-:

**
Update: My commitment to truth in reviewing obliges me to report that as the drydown dragged on and continued to expand, ARDEN BEAUTY slid from the "no desire to wear" to the "desire not to wear" category. The fragrance somehow changed from vague to vaguely annoying. I don't want to exaggerate the point, however. I definitely do not feel like post-conditioning Alex in "A Clockwork Orange" as he is subjected to Beethoven's Ninth. I'm not even close to hurling myself out a window. But I wouldn't mind a bath...

Spicy floral
From what I remember smelling, I really liked this one. I had originally been searching for a fragrance for my mother's birthday, and seeing that she loves most Elizabeth Arden fragrances, I was compelled to try this. From a quick whiff, I thought that smells nice and walked off. I returned some weeks later and got my mother to test it to see if she liked it, (she didn't unfortunately). Before leaving, I sprayed a bit on my wrist and a few hours later I was wondering what smelt so good.

Even my boyfriend at the time noticed it and asked what smelt so sexy. I think a lot of people may be shocked to know that it's an Elizabeth Arden fragrance. At the time I didn't buy it because I was going through a strange stage in my life where I refused to buy anything cheap. But now that I'm older and a lot wiser I think I'll succumb and buy a bottle of this on my next shopping spree.

Just washed the lawn
I really try to fight the urge to refer to fragrances by referencing some other fragrance that it smells like. It's not helpful if you haven't smelled the fragrance in question, and it's only barely helpful even if you have. But I need some kind of word for this 90s-feeling genre of fragrances that reminds me of Pleasures Eau de Parfum , the sort of perfumes that seem designed to conjure up white cotton dresses and green American lawns, with or without a white picket fence included.

Anyway, whatever I'm calling that genre (tennis court chic, perhaps), Ardenbeauty is one of those. It kind of distinguishes itself a bit by having a little more warmth to it— to call it 'spicy' would be an absurd exaggeration, but it's crisp without being cold, if that makes sense. Clean, pleasant, pretty, but not very interesting. I can see myself wearing this at outdoor barbecues hosted by people around whom I'm not comfortable wearing something fun.

(As a side note it honestly boggles my mind that Catherine Zeta-Jones was the face for this. I associate her with those dark, sexy ladies in Chicago, and Ardenbeauty is not even a little bit Velma Kelly. But whatever, I'm not a marketer)
