tow-head
I’ve mentioned before that Etat Libre d’Orange’s schtick is easy to dispense with because it’s so ridiculous. I love the perfume that ELDO make, and I support the notion that perfumery needs to be shaken up. The grade-school boyishness, though, is self-defeating. The first thing I do with a bottle from ELDO is to put away the little text/illustration insert that “explains” the perfume. ‘Is she a real blond? Only nudity will reveal the truth.’ It’s what would come out of creative writing class for horny 13 year-old boys.

But the perfume!

Vraie Blonde is often compared to Chanel 5 and it should be. Not for any similarity of scent, but for the fact that they are similarly abstract. Vraie Blonde is a myrrh fragrance in the way that Chanel 5 is a floral fragrance. It doesn’t smell like any one thing but experiencing it, I catch images of butter cookies, peach skin, muscat grapes, porridge, closets, make-up, and baby skin. It’s all over the map in the best sense.

Vraie Blonde doesn’t smell like anything else I’ve smelled. It doesn’t suggest or allude to any other scent. It’s a fairly new territory for me and gives me a new olfactory image to attach meaning, emotion, value to.

Let me step away from the perfume itself for a moment. This experience of encountering the new and assimilating it by attaching concepts and meanings to it is how I (we) deal with the unknown. The unknown is necessarily abstract because I can’t perceive it. In identifying something new, I categorize it, attach descriptors to it, compare it to other ideas and experiences and eventually start to get a handle on it. I name it. To some degree, this is what I do with all perfumes, or more broadly, with all scents. For all my talk, there is no proper language to scent because, other than for perfumers, the olfactory is a read-only medium. It’s the nature of the biz, man. Here is my rationale for seeing all perfumery as abstract by definition.

Back to Vraie Blonde. It’s just lovely. It’s blanketing and dense. Though others describe it as bubbly and champagne-like, the classic aldehydic descriptors, I find it quite the opposite. It’s enveloping. It draws you into it. It’s seductive. It reminds me in feeling, if not in scent, of Robert Piguet’s Baghari, another smoldering aldehydic perfume. Vraie Blonde sits at the exact point between activity and passivity and waits for you to tip it one way or the other.

My fair lady interrupted
I love this on paper, for its cold creaminess and translucent beauty. The peaches, white flowers and wisely used aldehydes create a feminine, angelic aura of attractive fragility. It's quite a shy, delicate beauty, this lady.

Testing it on my skin however, revealed perhaps a bit more of Vraie Blonde than I expected or wanted to smell. A somewhat vulgar undertone that's reminiscent of Secretions Magnifiques can be felt up close, near the skin. It is however very vague and not really unpleasant and you cannot detect it from a distance. I guess I must've caught a waft of the good lady's underwear.

The lasting power and especially the sillage are very good.

This classy, impecably dressed blonde has a bit of toilet paper stuck in one of her heels.

Vrooom!
Vraie Blonde blows me away. What a physical perfume! So dense and three-dimensional, I feel like I could touch it, grasp it with both hands. This is not just scented air; it is a visible and tangible cloud, matter, it is not abstract, it is concrete. Somehow also fatty and cloying, it has a slightly oily presence, even though it undoubtedly belongs to the powdery scents. Why do I smell, no, feel a kind of oiliness here? Or is it more of a fattiness? Or even a greasiness? This "tactile" misunderstanding of the scent goes hand in hand with what I am smelling.

Hit me, knock me out, shake me: I smell chocolate. White chocolate, not creamy milk chocolate, nor bitter dark chocolate, but rather something I always imagine when I hear "cocoa butter." I smell intense real cocoa powder, paired with a kind of oiliness, somewhat buttery. I am completely puzzled as to why I smell this. The fragrance notes give me no answer. I have also considered whether I have a mislabelled fragrance sample. But all the other ELdOs are chocolate-free (okay, there is one with cocoa in the base, but the rest doesn't fit at all). The only idea: I always react so strongly to leather. Maybe here the suede is such an aromatic, sweet, powdery, chocolatey one?

Anyway. Vraie Blonde is a hefty, voluminous scent cloud with a slightly stuffy gourmand quality and a strange oiliness that feels a bit too greasy or even dirty for me. Yet it never really becomes sweet (no vanilla, no sugar), but remains rather balsamic-powdery. In the dry down, it even becomes a bit soapy, which doesn't quite fit. An unusual creation for sure, which may simply not work optimally on my skin and in my nose. I am also more of a street mutt blonde. So...

Reese? Not Witherspoon, but Hershey's
Then I want to join the line of people who find this scent "greasy."

Shortly after spraying it on, I first thought, what a nice little fragrance! A light peach note rose from my arm. But what was that? Somehow the scent changed and became, yes, what? Buttery! I don’t mean the smell of rancid butter, but rather the scent of room-temperature, sweet butter. This butteriness completely coats the other fragrance components with its oiliness.

With the heart note, a few rose petals lie in the butter, and the scent becomes sweeter.

The chocolate note that Fran perceived was not quite as pronounced for me, but still noticeable. VB reminds me of those rich Belgian butter pralines from the brand Leonidas. These pralines contain so much butter in the recipe that the chocolate used is enveloped in the buttery flavor.

Only in the base does the greasy scent diminish and reveal a subtle leather note with a hint of patchouli.

I am also surprised by the wearability of this ELdO. Well, the scent doesn’t necessarily match my personal taste. The longevity of VB is quite good, but it doesn’t really develop a sillage.

Now a quick note about the name of the perfume. True Blonde, or if you will, naturally Blonde. One immediately thinks of Reese Witherspoon! But when I got this butter bomb under my nose, I had to think of another Reese! The Reese's peanut butter cups! Well, VB certainly doesn’t smell like peanuts, but it can easily compete with those sweets in terms of greasiness!

So, now I’ll have a bitter to help with digestion!

Washed-Out Blonde?
This is either the worst case of skin-fighting perfume I know, or 'Vraie Blonde' actually smells this bad. Even on the test strip, I thought: "Come on, are you serious?" This scent, if you can even call it that, does not smell like a wearable perfume to me at all.
On my skin, it gets even worse. All the notes except for myrrh and suede completely vanish, and what remains smells somehow...dirty. And unfortunately not in a sexy way.
Once again, Etat libre d'orange leaves me puzzled, and I am sure: This blonde desperately needs a bath. At least...

Chemical accident in the shower powder factory. I have to cough with every breath. What a shame about the beautiful myrrh!

A synthetic-sweet-floral affair. Unusual, but not exceptionally good.

After an initial peach note, the fragrance develops towards skin accords. Unfortunately, there's a buttery note lingering. Quite unique.

Where does the mustiness come from? Cognac? Myrrh? Suede? The combination? Stuffy room. Scent or smell? Smell! And definitely not a pleasant one.
