Airy and Chic
This is a really different choice for a summer spritz, if you are bored of the usual floral fruity or aquatic colognes on offer. Un Air de Samsara still has the feel of the original with the jasmine and sandalwood base, albeit very sheer, but it is the opening of bergamot and mint that freshens the whole structure and acts as a cooling breeze to the warmth of the base notes. Very beautiful, so of course discontinued!

The "Something Not Quite Right" Samsara
Oh, I thought I would love this one ... a lighter version of the Samsara that I love. Unfortunately, it's the mint & citrus ... hum ... something is a bit off to me. As the top dries, the fragrance becomes warm, which doesn't seem summer-appropriate to me. Eventually the fragrance morphs into a very Guerlain version of Samara done light. If only it lasted longer.

I prefer the original over Un Air. For summer wear, I'd rather use the original in EdT, either lightly spraying or as a mist walk-through.

Samsara lite
Definitely a lighter, fresher take on the sandalwood classic, Samsara.

I haven't smelled Samsara in a while, but thought I might find it too heavy for my tastes these days, which is why I was intrigued by this perfume. Now I think I want to try the original again, because I suspect I would like a deeper version of this better.

Still, a lovely, very wearable scent

perfect spring flanker
Ah Guerlain, the house that raised the mark of quality and unmistakable beauty. The 21st century has not been kind to the great house. Samsara was one of the biggest commercial successes of the last decade and Un Air De Samsara was the first flanker to lighten up the original masterpiece. My box is dated 1988. I believe this was it for this charmer. It may as well have been a limited edition.

Sandalwood is of course the focus here once again. I am always taken aback by the ability to bring this most common woody note to dominate the composition. It plays tricks on your nose and runs throughout this beauty. It set the trend for the big sandalwood craze that would continue through the next ten years.

Un Air de Samsara is rare beauty that resembles a fine triple milled soap. This is one of the houses that handled the mint note with skill to avoid the mouthwash effect that we would detect in later decades. There is some jasmine, ylang and narcissus. I also get plenty oakmoss and vetiver for the green notes that sit so well behaved. Its gentleness has a feminine quality that is perfect for picnics in the park or outdoor teas under a warm spring sun.

A production like this will never be seen again as it was marketed to the masses with top quality ingredients. I would retail for about $30. Now it is priceless and worth having in your collection.

Un Air de Pear Tree
Un Air was released in '95, just as India stopped the cutting of sandalwood trees.
And it's hard to think : this is a flanker of Samsara, that would-be Shalimar of the Aquatic age.

It's a weak woody base with a minty pear floral, the type of thing that might serve for the new Grès, but not the old Guerlain.
A compromise too far.

Dryer version of Eau de Guerlain. They didn't break their head at Guerlain to release this flanker. Nice nevertheless.

On a bad day, it smells like Samsara with toothpaste. On a good day, it's like a cool, sweet and fresh drink with citrus, mint and vanilla.
