Refreshment
Verveine's opening is interesting. The rhubarb stands out and I like that. What follows is a pretty straight-forward lemon verbena scent. Sour, greenish.

Today is sunny and warm, not particularly hot yet. The first half to full hour, it had an ok projection. After that it's hide and seek.

A nice summer refreshment. And that's about it, really. It left me quite indifferent.

Now You Smell It, Now You Don't...
Verveine opens with a light, fresh almost lemon grassy accord before turning more herbal, while mixing with lemon verbena in the heart notes. The herbal lemon verbena even turns a hair sour, even slightly rubbery... And then it all but disappears. I really don't get much if any base notes. Projection is below average to average, and longevity is quite brief.

I liked the brief fresh lemon grass opening, but when the scent turned slightly sour and rubbery it lost me. I also bemoan the extremely brief longevity. I don't dislike Verveine, but I find it only average on the whole, and way over-priced for what it is. Not bad, but not recommended. 2.5 to 3 stars out of 5.

If Only It Lasted...
At the open, there's a lovely mixture of lemongrass and rhubarb with a bit of cardamom and floral citrus. This eventually settles into a fruity, lemon verbena with an undertone of musk. A really pleasing fresh scent that would be great during the day in warmer weather. Well, that is if it lasted the day. Or even the hour.

Honestly, the projection is practically nothing even on application. It lasts as a skin scent for 1-2 hours before being totally imperceptible. An absolute disappointment that holds back an otherwise enjoyable fragrance. I don't see how I could buy something with about as much power as an average body wash.

Atonement with Oxalic Acid & Co.
Rhubarb. The forms of this vegetable I had known until now ranged from 'not so great' to 'run away,' including the corresponding scents.

From Mr. Heeley's version, I expected nothing less; after all, he delivered a flawless example of realistic natural osmopimplie with Menthe Fraîche (this is the analog counterpart of natural photography in fragrance form). I feared an unbearable onslaught of lifelike rhubarb with its wide range of acids - and was pleasantly surprised. However, I could have been warned. Recently, I tasted rhubarb soda for the first time and found it surprisingly tasty. I confess: I was mistaken and have learned.

As with the soda, it's all about the blend here too. Alongside the rhubarb, there is a more fruity than abrasive bergamot; good idea, rhubarb grating is enough. Moreover, it seems that not only the blackcurrant buds mentioned by Mr. Heeley, with their own grating abilities, are in play; perhaps a few fruits were allowed to ripen as well; they were, by the way, equally successful contributors to the soda. In short, after spraying, a deliciously zesty-fruity freshness rises, just on the right side of scratchy.

Unfortunately, unfortunately, unfortunately. The verbena does (first "unfortunately") indeed get a bit overshadowed in direct confrontation - the molecules at the front only last for the first ten seconds - and it also fails to truly fill the gap that emerges after the furious (and, second "unfortunately," very short) opening phase. Even during the first hour, the scent largely retreats to the skin and develops a soapy-clean cream quality, where the citrus is no longer a banner but at best a sticker. The cream persistently butters the verbena down just as the rhubarb did before.

To clarify: It smells elegant, the cream note is extravagantly spicy, characterfully herbaceous, and thus truly unisex. However, (third "unfortunately") by noon, it is essentially over; only a radiant musk note remains, underpinned by a hint of wood - undoubtedly still pleasant, but definitely an end.

Conclusion: Just because of the new rhubarb experience, I was happy to test Verveine d'Eugène. It could serve as a summery, delightful top-note cologne with frequent reapplication. Despite the poor longevity of the most beautiful part, it’s a test recommendation; perhaps you’ll have better luck.

I thank Gerdi for the enlightening sample.

Messy Business
I'm slowly starting to like Heeley perfumes. They seem to be cleanly composed and made from high-quality ingredients, partly with a creative approach without being too outlandish.

Such is Verveine d´Eugène, a refreshing summer fragrance that offers a splash of rhubarb alongside the usual bergamot. It somehow fits a hot sunny day. Jasmine? Yes, it can still be faintly perceived. However, I have to pass on the blackcurrant, which doesn't mean I would rule it out.

Clearly in the foreground is the lemon verbena. Nice and rich, yet natural-looking with a fine tartness that pairs well with the rhubarb.

The convincing part: Verveine d´Eugène doesn't necessarily tell a new story or is highly complex, but it comes across as pleasantly tart and summery fresh - and that in a natural and valuable way.

On top of that, I received nice compliments from a colleague. She was totally enchanted by the scent and wanted to know who was wearing which perfume. I hadn’t thought that Verveine d´Eugène had such an overarching projection and didn’t feel directly addressed, but eventually, I was indeed unmasked. I haven't received such fragrance compliments in a long time. Moreover, you can't complain about the longevity either. So, in a way, it's quite sweet overall.

Citrus start, but quickly turns green and herbal. Quite fresh, but a little bit synthetic.

Delicately fresh-green-fruity-sour summer morning scent full of joyful promise of June shimmer, heat relief, and rhubarb compote.

Tomato leaf, fig, currant - there's little room for the lemon bush. Fruity-earthy-floral green, lightened up. Solid.

Wehrwänn smells great. A wonderfully fresh-sour summer scent without aquatic notes. The lack of attention must be due to the name.

If you love the tangy scent of rhubarb soda, you might find happiness here. Don’t expect cake! This isn’t sweet baking!

Great, this scent hits me like a cold breeze. I smell rhubarb briefly, then it becomes wonderfully citrusy-herbaceous.

You should like the omnipresent rhubarb:
Sparkling-fresh + herb-fruity on musk, cardamom, jasmine + verbena are hardly noticeable.
