I keep coming back
I tried 10 samples of various Heeley fragrances. Cardinal blew me away, and was my favorite. Vetiver Veritas is a close second.

The opening is spectacular. I get the freshest, juiciest mint - as if you gripped a bunch of mint leaves in your hand and squeezed until the juice ran down your wrist. And then a blast of fruit - not just citrus, but also fresh raspberries and strawberries. These top notes last for about 30 minutes.

Vetiver is the star for the rest of the show. Earthy, spicy, clean, just slightly smokey. Green. Fresh. Mysterious.

Completely unisex. Good projection and longevity, especially as compared to other Heeley fragrances. Unique but not weird.

I would absolutely buy a full bottle, but for some reason this fragrance only comes in 50ML, and is priced the same as the other Heeley fragrances, which are all sold at 100ML. Can't see why this is double the cost, even if it contains "only natural" ingredients...

Minimalist vetiver
This vetiver is dark green, somber, minimalist. Not far from Encre Noire, just less gloomy and -in my case- less headache inducing. It has a few mint leaves in the opening for refreshment and a bitter-sour grapefruit in the background. Actually I found the grapefruit note the more interesting part of the fragrance. Listed as a base note? Hmm yeah it actually makes sense.

Heeley claims that Vetiver Veritas is made of 100% natural ingredients and a composition with over 90% Haitian Vetiver of exceptional quality. Boy oh boy. It didn't make a difference, at least in my perception.

The True Vetiver Revelation!
Well, if I hadn't been so ridiculously stuffed up at the Parfumo meeting in Düsseldorf mentioned by Leimbacher, I could have already tackled Heeley's latest vetiver sensation.

So I only got to enjoy it almost a week late - but it doesn't matter: now I finally have a proper olfactory picture of it. And I am more than pleasantly surprised! Here, two ingredients come together in a wonderful way, which I have always strongly suspected would complement each other superbly.

Finally, finally, finally a combination of vetiver and mint where everything, even the quality, seems to be just right! The mint bursts through powerfully, almost with the intensity of Japanese medicinal plant oil. But the best part: it remains present even after many hours. The vetiver comes through as perfectly earthy and gnarly, with a balsamic dignity that seems to captivate everything in its path. Lavender and grapefruit clearly play a subordinate role, but would be noticeably missed if they weren't included.

The mention on the label that the contents are 100% natural sounds almost cute, but one can certainly believe it. Folks, there is absolutely life in the bottle ... and you can feel it with every sniff or inhale. Vetiver Veritas is a fragrance that leaves a rich ethereal trail in the atmosphere.

I dare to claim that with this vetiver, several other representatives of this category will have to measure up. Of course, the addition of mint is a matter of taste. But anyone who enjoys both the typical dryness of the sweet grass and the freshness of mint will not be able to avoid Vetiver Veritas. That is the truth!

the green explosion
(or: The scent from the crypt :-))

I am really doubting whether James Heeley has made it a bit too easy for himself.

Some time ago, I ordered organic vetiver oil to experience "the original" scent and to form my own judgment about the grass and its composition with other substances (5ml €11.30). In addition, I have various types of organic mint from different suppliers at home.

My vetiver is relatively viscous, intensely green, a rather austere scent, and absolutely identical to "Vetiver-Veritas." If you don't dilute a drop with oil, it remains the base when mixed with other ingredients, meaning that what comes through at the end is particularly intense.

James Heeley's "art" seems to lie in his ability to use his mixing ratio to let the mint play a targeted role. I only see lavender and grapefruit in the listed scent notes. Scent-wise, everything is actually overshadowed by the vetiver. And as mentioned, it is quite austere. The grapefruit becomes intrusive at the end because it supports the firm - heavy vetiver too much. Until the bitter end.

I actually find the scent quite uninspired. I can't and don't want to try all vetiver perfumes, but among those I have tried, "Le Vetiver" by Lubin is the most beautiful interpretation for me(!).

Nothing against purism. But here, the artistic variant is too restrained for me. "Veritas" is too simply structured. It is the most inconsequential scent I have tested from James Heeley so far. Just too much of the good vetiver.
Others might appreciate it precisely for its uncomplicated directness, as for the vetiver purist, it is surely the impressive original to spray on. The combination with just a tiny bit of mint is a fitting idea. But that’s all there is. In the end, the grapefruit dominates quite bitterly - brrrr.

James the rascal. I give him credit for not hiding that (in the title).

THE new reference scent for Vetiver??
The first moment after spraying:
surprised, what is this? Mint?? Strong, fresh mint - like on a summer morning, accompanied by delicate morning dew, freshly harvested from the herb garden. My first thought: oh dear, where will this lead? Does this fit with the vetiver??

I close my eyes and sniff my hand; the mint is present, but the vetiver is also there, like a twin brother who won't be overshadowed. However, it is repeatedly tamed by the mint... this combination is very unusual, yet the two complement each other excellently, each wanting to take the lead. For me, it is not a battle where there is only one winner - for me, it is a coming together, a connection that is so unique... each can stand alone, but together they are much stronger, more personal, and more unique!

I can't detect lavender at the moment. But I don't miss it either.

My thoughts drift to the vetiver from Guerlain. This is generally referred to as the (previous?) reference scent, the ultimate. But I am no longer sure. The vetiver from Guerlain is heavier, herbaceous, darker, duller, earthier.

But here, something fascinating happens with Vetiver Veritas - more and more with each passing minute...

On Heeley's homepage, it is stated that this is the first scent of his new 100% Neutral Eau de Parfum Collection. The result is impressive and does not need to hide behind synthetic fragrance materials. On the contrary! I am much more surprised that such an intense perfume can be made from 100% natural ingredients - without the "fragrance enhancers" of synthetic or chemical fragrance materials.

After thirty minutes:
The mint is still there, but it takes a step back - in favor of the vetiver. But it has not disappeared; on the contrary, the two are increasingly merging into a whole! Incredible! To sniff this is simply stunning...

After an hour:
The vetiver is coming more and more to the forefront. Gnarled roots and dry hay on one side - and clean, clear, pure, and fresh on the other side! Sounds like the contrasts of mint and vetiver - like twins. It might be due to the Haitian vetiver, I don't know, but it excites me more and more. The mint, however, still accompanies in the background. The sillage is very pleasant, also suitable for a two-room office.

After 5 hours:
The vetiver is around me. I feel like it accompanies and carries me. The mint is only faintly perceptible now, and the vetiver is present - for me in a pure form. It is beautifully earthy and has a natural strength that I have not smelled in vetiver before.
The sillage, with an effect of 1.5 to 2 meters, diminishes, but the scent remains on the skin, and I have it in my nose... when I sit still, when I move - it is there! Now I am starting to slowly sniff something new. Is it the grapefruit that I had not discovered until now?? I don't know!

THE new reference scent?
YES - for me, it is THE new reference scent for vetiver!!!

Not a rough, not an "unrefined" scent - but a scent that carries, that fascinates, that is down-to-earth yet offers room for dreams, that lets you rise above...

A must for every vetiver fan!!!

Quality vetiver. One spray is projecting nicely with small wind. Carful when spraying on white, natural oils, not synthetic

Damp, earthy roots mingle with zesty and lightly sweet citrus, the duo is constantly changing positions in this dark vetiver fragrance.

So this is a non-offensive, spicy vetiver scent that would suit a person in one's middle age for business occasions. Smells classy, unique.

Nice simple smoky vetiver, though not that strong and the price is high.
