Apricot Feel-Good Rose/Oud
Henry Jacques Correspondance is probably one of the more popular fragrances in the Henry Jacques lineup. With its interesting composition, which adds apricot, iris and ambergris to the well-known rose/oud, Henry Jacques creates a completely new kind of rose/oud composition. After extensive testing, both on skin and paper, as an oil and also Les Brumes, here is the result.

It doesn't take us long to get straight into the fragrance - starting with a sweet, friendly apricot, mixed with floral components of a floral, red, sweet rose, this fragrance makes a statement right from the start: instead of dark, deep and woody, as is typical with rose/ouds, we get a much fruitier, much lighter and much friendlier composition here. The colors I associate with the opening are yellow, orange and pink, instead of the usual deep red, brown or even black. The exciting thing: The fragrance develops more or less constantly, five minutes later it smells completely different than before, and some of the individual notes cannot really be described. Although rose and apricot appear at the beginning, they never disappear completely and always remain a dominant part of the composition. Meanwhile, patchouli and oud come through to give the whole thing a base, although I personally smell more patchouli than oud, and the oud is also more of a sweet nature, less woody or even smoky as we know it from, for example, Oudh Imperial from the same company. The iris, although I generally don't really like iris, surprisingly finds its place here to such an extent that I wouldn't want to be without it, and the ambergris also adds a pleasant lightness. The drydown leaves traces of oud and patchouli, but for me the apricot remains by far the most dominant, together with the rose, both of which are extremely present from start to finish. For me, this is an absolutely unique, unusual rose/oud(?), whereby the emphasis here is clearly more on the rose, paired with the apricot. And although I don't really like fruit or iris, everything works really well here - a great interplay of all the notes. Not too much, not too little, everything in the right place. Enough special features to pass as unique, yet at the same time a pleasant list of notes that don't sound special as individual notes, but together create something truly unique that would appeal not only to perfume enthusiasts, but also to newcomers or simply people on the street. A fragrance that makes an impression, that is friendly, but that is also simply self-determined and has a certain uniqueness.

As always, almost everything is just right at Henry Jacques. The in-store experience is great, everything is shown to you without any problems, and the way of testing is well thought out, because fragrances like the Correspondance only come at the end, when the lighter fragrances are through, so as not to overload the nose right from the start. A really clever system. After testing, choose one or two fragrances to test on the skin. The bottles are great, as is the service and the longevity of Correspondance is really enormous. The sillage is also impressive, thanks in part to the light and fruity top notes. It's also interesting to note that the nice employee titled this fragrance "East meets West", which is not only fitting, but also really beautiful. While notes such as iris, vanilla and patchouli are reminiscent of Western perfumery, the rose and oud bring a certain oriental contrast, which is a real dream for me as an absolute fan of both sides. The idea of combining both perfume worlds is ingenious and for me one of the strongest points of this fragrance.

Correspondance is just great to wear - it evokes a certain feeling, you just feel good, if not a little... rich? A sheikh in the Emirates who is happy in his country, but who has also discovered the art of Western perfume through his many trips and meetings and now wants a bit of both. And this is where it gets painful - at just under 1200 euros for 15 ml of oil or 75 ml of spray perfume, this fragrance is anything but cheap. Anyone who was already out of Roja will not be happy here either. However, if you have the money to spare or would like to try it without the necessary budget, you will definitely enjoy Correspondance, especially because of the above-mentioned characteristics. It is simply fun - a real feel-good fragrance. If only it weren't so incredibly expensive.

rose & oud .. and some apricot
Reviewing oils form HJ is no easy task ...
First you have to recover from the huge sum you pay on them .. and after that you have to keep in mind that they are natural oils.. this is the most important issue, since in nature, no natural fragrance/aroma/etc lasts an eternity or projects immensely.
Oils in general are a more intimate affair, you will NOT quickly spray them, applying them takes a bit of time and more consideration, the likes of which are not usually not taken into account when spraying fragrances: want to apply on clothes ? are you sure ? they will stain, they won't evaporate and due to the fact that the fabric is dry, has no oils like the skin, projection will be kept to a minimum and voila.. maybe get ready for some disappointment from this point of view.

Knowing these let's get to Correspondance.
Usually HJ oils are blended to perfection, high end perfumery tends to be like this. This is not their best blend. It is good, but not exceptional. Also it is not such an innovative composition, rose and oud are omnipresent in perfumery.

What Correspondance stands out with is the quality of ingredients. Upon applying it you get hit with rose and the discrete hyacinth in the background. It is a bit powdery as given by the iris, and the apricot to my nose is more like apricot's soft core/kernel (if you have eaten one you will know that specific bitterness taste and aroma).
So the opening is a mellow somehow bitter sweet oudy rose. I know it's a lot of words for an opening but that's what you will get. More experienced noses maybe will get something else. One thing to note is that the oud here is not the barnyard/stinky one usually found in poorly processed ouds (don't want to cause a fight with this argument, there are opinions and opinions on this), but it is a higher quality one. It sits in the background and gives a masculine touch. Yes, this is a masculine oil in my opinion. For a woman ? Maybe yes, but for someone more mature.
In time the rose will fade slightly and the scent will become a tad more bitter and powdery (hello iris); this will happen in 15-30minutes. But it will still project quite well.. After this time the rose will loose it's power even more (ever saw an eternally smelling rose? nope? me neither), but will not fade out, the iris will make the scent more powdery. The bitterness of the apricot will remain, but after 30min the main players are rose, oud, iris, in this order.

The oil has a sweetness to it, (not as sweet as Roja's fruit-patchouly Amber Aoud). That is present in the beginning and fades out slowly.

It projects good for a HJ, as they usually stay more close to the skin. And as every oil it opens up in warm weather. In fact, all HJ's are excellent in warm weather. Want to throw money out the window ? Great, buy some HJ oils and wear them at sub 20 degrees Celsius.. Over 22, 24 ? Excellent !

My bottle is from 2020 but I've heard that vintage bottles are even better. Can't imagine how to be honest..

Don't know why I picked Correspondance as my first review here but here it is..

And yes, the official name is CorrespondAnce, not CorrespondEnce..
