Way better than expected

Many times a perfume can't be judged by the sum of its notes and without even smelling it properly, people form an opinion.

I bought it more to check if it's similar to the Moon, also a creation of Julien Rasquinet.. what followed impressed me big time.

This is not an OUD perfume, this is a complex, feel good scent which will evolve from the initial spray to drydown so nicely and harmonious. It has ambery nuances even if such note is not listed.

Its not a cheap alternative to The Moon, but a great standalone creation with power, sillage and feel good factor.

A new arrangement of oud/rose/saffron

The opening of Fidelis is sparkling, soil-like, semi-floral - as in violet-oriented fragrances - and kind of vegetal yet so brutal. This is a beginning of a perfect composition on oudwood and very appetizing spicy floral patch.

As expected from the notes, saffron and cardamom are so bold. Julien Rasquinet masterly employs coffee to give the spicy theme a crisp and dry pseudo-woody/smoky dimension, however, this characteristic is even more intense by cumin, for which the whole composition highly incline to Serge Lutens' works, specially Serge Noir and those orchestrated by cloves and cumin. Cumin, cardamom and saffron are entwined together and formed a spicy whole with gigantic effect on wet medicinal aged Laotian oud.

The core of the fragrance is so spicy and floral that stinks a little and scratches your nose as smelling fresh ground pepper. What makes me take my hat off for Rasquinet's intelligence, is his smart use of four elements of an ordinary so-called oriental rose-oud-saffron-patchouli in the composition and not being affected by the market. He elaborately identifies it in a different way and shows the abilities of oudwood.

Sillage: 9/10, better to say projection, a tiny spray on my wrist and I have it in whole the/ room.
Scent: 8/10 so special and distinct.

Fidelis!

If you like rose-oud combinations, this one will leave you begging for more.

Beautiful opening with bit of a raspberry tartness and saffron with jammy rose and hint of woody smoke and not so cuminy intensive cumin while cardamom and coffee dance in the background. It's dense, dark and potent! One of my favorite winter fragrances!
This is one of the beast mode fragrances! Lasts 12h on my skin and sillage is monster, everything above 2 sprays is too much!

Julien Rasquinet made a masterpiece here and this one will definitely stay forever in my collection! Bravo!

Still Searching for "The Moon" On the Cheap...

Fidelis opens with a very brief dash of soft raspberry before quickly transitioning to its heart. As the composition enters its early heart, the raspberry vacates, being replaced by a starring faux Oud wood accord (most likely cypriol derived), supported by a heavy cardamom, saffron and cumin spice trio that combine to create a sharp wet concrete-like accord in support of the starring Oud with a very subtle underlying integrated coffee note. As the composition moves through its middle, an almost pipe tobacco-like supporting accord joins in with the rest to keep things interesting. During the late dry-down, the composition significantly sweetens, as the Oud gradually recedes revealing the slightly powdery amber driven base, with traces of the saffron spice warming the amber through the finish. Projection is average and longevity excellent at about 12 hours on skin.

After having been extremely impressed with The Moon from Frederic Malle and hearing talk that its predecessor from perfumer Rasquinet, Fidelis, from Histoires de Parfums was the composition it may have been based on I had to get my nose on it to sniff for myself. To give my quick verdict, there is *some* shared DNA between the two, but no, these compositions are very far from twins and not at all interchangeable. Fidelis really is much more about warm spice and faux Oud than the jammy raspberry and real Oud oil, rose/patch focus of The Moon. While those seeking "The Moon on the cheap" may walk away disappointed with Fidelis, when viewed on its own it is successful in its own right. Rasquinet never lets the cypriol get out of control, and tames it with the spice and a very clever coffee note that is extremely subtle but just sufficient to work with the spice to blend perfectly with the faux Oud. The late dry-down sneaks up on you, as the composition moves towards its amber-driven finish seemingly at a snail's pace, but the whole thing from top to bottom is quite skillfully done. The only real gripe this writer finds is what best can be described as a wet concrete accord throughout the mid-section of the composition's development. This, distracts to some degree from the Oud to prevent its complete dominance, but one may not quite care for the end result. The bottom line is the $160 per 60ml bottle Fidelis may not be a "The Moon on the cheap" solution to bargain hunters, but it is a "very good" smelling 3.5 stars out of 5 rated composition in its own right that is definitely recommended, regardless.

Fidelis - love me some rose gold coffee break

Fidelis was a great discovery in Jovoy London.
It is a Fragheads heaven! They had all these rare perfumes spread over two levels. I was like a kid in a candy store but then quickly focussed on notes I liked. I love rose, I love tuberose but I also started to appreciate Amber in all its flavours, I said. I was shown different fragrances, which I liked to a certain extent but Fidelis was a love at first sniff. It was unusual, it was spicy -resinous, it had amber and coffee, it had rose and oud. It was all my favourite things rolled into one. The opening is spicy, however I cannot detect cumin and it doesn’t smell weird like some other cumin containing fragrances( looking at you Rose Hubris). It’s a deep cosy fragrance that was well suited for a rainy October day. However, now I wear it also at 36 C and it is just as beautiful. The lasting power is immense, the scent trail is incredible and the scent is unique and definitely gets noticed.
