Woody, dry patchouli--seriously natural smelling
After my bath this evening I put on a honeysuckle patchouli body lotion from the now discontinued Victoria's Secret all natural body line, so it seemed like the opportune time to reconnect with my bottle of Demeter Vintage Naturals 2009 PATCHOULI. It still smells good, four years after its creation, and I have to say that this could have been passed off as a more expensive niche perfume. In fact it smells both natural and niche-y.

The composition is rather simple, but the effect is quite pleasing: a dry woody patchouli with no sugar or vanilla anywhere to be sniffed, which is a welcome change from the dozens (hundreds?) of vanilla patchouli perfumes on the market today. The cardamom, nutmeg, and orange are judiciously measured so as not to be salient at all. With its total absence of vanilla, Vintage Naturals 2009 PATCHOULI is a 100% unisex creation, in addition to being 100% natural.

I am slowing moving toward the indie natural niche houses as my disenchantment with the big houses continues, and I've pretty much given up on all houses now subsumed under the corporate giants. Why? Because they keep pumping out generic juice from their vast vats of shared factories. In stark contrast, there is no iso-E-super or ambroxan in this Demeter all natural creation, and it makes a big difference. The natural smell of wood and patchouli here are truly refreshing in a world flush with aromachemicals.

Nice job, Demeter! Now I'm going to have to try their new all-natural patchouli, which should smell different, according to what they say on the box of the 2009 vintage launches, for the simple reason that the ingredients are sourced from different times and places. But if it smells anything like this, it will be a winner, too.
