The discreetness of rainy air
How can one describe the rain with a fragrance? I was expecting something aquatic and harsh, a synthetic blend of musks, calone, hedione and all that ingredients that seem to be inevitable when something has to do with water. But I was wrong. La Pluie got me with a kind of reminiscence to the dusty-powdery smell of Dior Homme – only softer! I am possibly wrong since no orris is listed, but yet, this was my first impression.

I only had a few spritzes at a perfume shop, and with such a discreet perfume it is hardly possible to discover all its secrets with such a short test. La Pluie seems to have a story behind it – it is a walk in the rain. Not a thunderstorm, no severe weather is being imposed on the wearer – it is a calm rain – that kind that nature gratefully welcomes as life's necessity by revealing all those tender scents that are hidden away during dry periods.

Top and middle notes are full of flowery and soft green notes – but only hints, so it is not easy guessing. La Pluie is an extremely discreet fragrance, too discreet by far for most perfume lovers. It is only for those who just want to have a very light aura of something magic around them, but nothing really noticeable or even describable to third persons.

In the base note, La Pluie seems to turn into a musky direction. Is has only a very slight, creamy soapiness, but also a little bit of animalic depth. I like that – so many soft and tender notes can get on your nerves when they are presented too offensive. This is definitely not the case here. La Pluie will appeal to a small minority of very sensitive perfume lovers.

Lots of Ylang and Vanilla, Not so much Rain
I suspect that the name of Miller Harris LA PLUIE has engendered plenty of dashed expectations. This perfume opens very briefly with a watery quality vaguely reminiscent of damp wood. From there, however, the composition proceeds with dispatch to a fairly strong ylang-vanilla drydown, so much so that I am reminded of Guerlain AQUA ALLEGORIA YLANG VANILLA.

All stages considered, I would have to say that this is much more of a floriental than an aquatic perfume. As a simple, not-too-sweet floriental, LA PLUIE is nice, provided that one likes ylang-ylang. A lot.

Fresh and Wet Feeling
Fresh floral with aquatic elements...
A fresh, citrus floral opening with a fruity touch...
It is very nice for spring and summer because you get a fresh and wet feeling out of this! The opening reminds me very much the GUY LARoche Fidji but the dry down becomes more flowery and grassy when the vetiver stands out of the base notes.
It has good lasting power and i give it 3.5/5.

Ashley Wilkes
One of the most discussed and often misunderstood phenomena in film and literary history is the passion of the lively, beautiful, and capricious Scarlett O'Hara (who could have had anyone) for the pale, somewhat awkward Ashley Wilkes, the heir of Twelve Oaks, the neighboring plantation of the legendary Tara. He promptly married not her, but his cousin, the almost painfully kind-hearted Melanie - and Scarlett cannot escape him for the rest of her life.

Ashley Wilkes is the antithesis of the daring and exciting Rhett Butler, who is a gambler, womanizer, and war profiteer. Ashley is slight and quiet and somewhat shy, a bit boring and sometimes a weakling, yet not cowardly and never a traitor. In fact, Ashley - wonderfully fragile and hesitant as portrayed by Leslie Howard, with a constantly red-blonde curl on his forehead - is not someone who wins women over in a storm. He is much more a poet than a merchant or even a warrior - and is aware of his own lack of stature and charisma at every moment.

Miller's or Lyn Harris' La Pluie - the rain - is a fragrance that resembles Ashley in its essence: delicate and fleeting, strangely fragile and androgynous, yet not weak, although feeble - and full of quiet beauty and poetry. Nothing about it conquers in a stormy manner, nothing here is full of wildness or passion. La Pluie is a subtle fragrance, built on a foundation of strangely 'non-blooming' flowers - gray-green and somewhat murky - like a warm June rain falling silently for an entire afternoon. In this silence, it has something gentle, something almost musical - like a soldier who prefers to write poetry rather than wage war - or like Ashley Wilkes, who sometimes struggles because he is not a man of the world like Rhett Butler and not a merchant like Frank Kennedy - and yet honorable and upright.

Conclusion: a fragrance of silence and a certain shyness. One might wonder whether on days that feel quiet and shy, one would choose such a perfume - or would rather go without.

Gentle Summer Rain
Yesterday, the so-called "Altweiberkarneval" was not only stormy in the truest sense of the word but unfortunately also rainy. So I thought it would be a good opportunity to finally test Le Pluie by Miller Harris.

Of course, there are different types of rain, such as drizzle, sleet, snow rain, heavy rain, cloudbursts, monsoons, etc.
But Le Pluie embodies one of the most pleasant forms of falling droplets, namely the gentle short summer rain, which, although not conforming to yesterday's weather, was more than okay.

After all, the blend of orange blossom, which shines here intensely but still subtly, slightly bitter-fresh bergamot, as well as classic jasmine and ylang-ylang, gives the comforting illusion of enjoying a little moist refreshment on a sunny summer morning in the garden, just like when the dust is cleaned from the flowers and plants, inviting the sweet air for a breath of fresh air.

Even if things might be different in one's own garden, on the balcony, or in the park around the corner, Le Pluie at least conveys a positive feeling and makes even gray, dreary hours look a bit friendlier.

And while mimosa (I don't even know how it smells) reminds me a bit of lily of the valley (that's how it felt to me), it is also present. In contrast, lavender, mandarin, as well as vanilla and vetiver seem somewhat water-shy here.

Overall, the fragrance indeed comes across as floral, green, fresh with delicate tendencies towards powdery and restrained sweetness, including a fine bittersweet counterpoint. However, this rain doesn't last long. It is meant to cool the surface rather than flood the streets.

Although I sometimes struggle with floral perfumes, here the balanced harmony works, so it could essentially be worn by anyone. After all, the rain makes no difference when it comes to getting wet.

Moist accord of mimosa, herbs, and moss, a light drizzle, maybe in summer. Very pleasant scent by Lyn Harris, today Perfumer H.

It rains blossoms, without ever splashing thick, intrusive scent droplets on your mood. It stays light and gentle like a summer rain.

Colorful, bright blue cornflowers and a few poppies in the still lush green field, all bathed in sunshine and fragrant. No rain.

Unfortunately, the rain doesn't save the wilted flowers anymore, it quickly turns musty and stale. Luckily, it doesn't last long.

Smells floral chypre, classic and a bit old-fashioned, but I still like it.

A fine little rainwater that reminds me more of a light summer shower in the home garden on blooming flowers.

Jasmine powder puff choking hazard. By far the worst Miller Harris I know.
