Cutting Freshness or A cheap goodie for the freshies
You can think what you want about cheapies, but the chance of a great price/performance ratio is always subtly present.
This candidate here is a prime example.
100 ml can be obtained for under €20. The ingredients are certainly (mostly) from the lab, but of such quality that there is no bothersome synthetic scent, just a well-balanced olfactory impression.
Monotheme is an Italian brand from Venice that - as the name beautifully suggests - really creates monothematic fragrances (see "Background Information"). And they seem to do it quite well. At least, I have been very pleased with the two I have tested so far (Verde d'Arancia and Aqua Marina). There is no playful frills here, just essentially what is written on the bottle.

In this case: Aqua Marina (Seawater)

Scent Development:
The top note starts with a super refreshing mix of citrus, aquatic, and herbaceous/spicy minty nuances that give you the feeling of diving into the cool sea with a dolphin leap. Delightfully zesty and invigorating! This marine impression has little to do with natural salt, seaweed, or algae scents, but it is also distinctly away from a synthetic Calone character. It comes across surprisingly natural and oscillates in between. I prefer it over both mentioned alternatives.

The citrus and aquatic notes disappear quickly, leaving essentially this complex herbaceous-spicy, mint-like note. Over time, the spiciness increases somewhat, but it never becomes overwhelming compared to the ethereal herbaceous components. This complex spice note is wonderfully intertwined and very well balanced. The ethereal components maintain a slightly cool and fresh feeling throughout the entire duration.

Towards the base, green notes of a more mossy nature join in, giving the overall very masculine scent, especially due to the bitter spices, a nice rich, classic foundation. But even here, the ethereal quality does not run out of steam and continues to provide the initially established penetrating freshness even after a long wear.

The overall scent impression undoubtedly evokes associations with a very fresh-spicy shower gel, as hinted at in a statement below. At least, that’s how it is for me. But that doesn’t matter at all in this case, because good shower gel smells good, and the composition of the various ingredients creates such a beautiful, cutting herb-fresh fragrance aroma that truly amazes me. I have not encountered anything like this, which maintains its consistency throughout. No Menthe Froide or Erolfa can compete with it. It most closely reminds me of Blenheim Bouquet in its freshness level, although without its medicinal-sterile orientation.

You can certainly tell that this fragrance is not a Chanel or Guerlain, but I dare to boldly claim that these brands would not have done it (much) better with the ingredients available here. My previous reviewers have also had the impression that there is a lot of scent for little money here.
I am definitely very enthusiastic about this perfume, which combines so many things I like. And the price positively influences that, of course. I can’t completely free myself from that.

Longevity and Sillage:
On my skin, the scent lasts surprisingly long, so that after more than 10 hours of movement, I can still perceive the scent character. The realistic duration, meaning the time in which it is consciously perceivable wafting around me, is about 3-4 hours. The sillage is quite noticeable in the first half hour and then quickly retreats to skin level.

Usage Possibilities:
Due to its absolute freshness, it is of course ideal for high summer, as well as suitable for all warm phases. Additionally, due to its well-groomed, uncompromising masculinity, it can be worn effortlessly by men in both casual and more exclusive situations.
I cannot yet assess how it behaves in the cold season.

Conclusion:
Aqua Marina is a straightforward, cutting fresh scent, masculine and herbaceous-spicy-ethereal, which especially at the beginning reminds one of a shower gel, but ultimately far exceeds it in its overall composition and balance. With this scent, I feel that invigorating sensation that arises when I walk along the coast through the spray mist of the waves, albeit without the natural scent of salt and seaweed. For lovers of truly fresh fragrances, in my view, it is an absolute must-try candidate! It stylishly clears your head ;)

Background Information:
Monotheme is an Italian perfume brand based in Venice, founded in 2003. So far, it has released 66 perfumes. The fragrances are, as mentioned above, predominantly monothematic, meaning dedicated to a specific scent ingredient.
The parent company is Mavive SpA, which also markets brands like The Merchant of Venice, Pino Silvestre, Replay, and Police.
The Monotheme fragrances are grouped into the following categories:
Classic Collection, Il Libro degli Agrumi (Book of Citruses), Black Label, Bio Line, Earth Collection, and fragrances that do not belong to any of these families.
Aqua Marina comes from the Classic Collection.
The perfumers for Monotheme are Lorenzo Vidal and Pierre-Constantin Gueros, who has developed fragrances for Odin New York, Carolina Herrera, and Wiener Blut, among others. There is a collaboration with Symrise, the third-largest manufacturer of aroma and fragrance materials in the world, based in Holzminden, where, among others, Geza Schön was trained (back then it was not yet called Symrise, but Haarmann & Riemer; after the merger with Dragoco in 2003, the new name was created).

Price Tip!
Monotheme has received little attention on parfumo so far. These perfumes are rarely seen, but today I came across them at KaDeWe.

The perfumes are exceptionally affordable. For €28 / 100 ml, no one expects a great fragrance - but what Monotheme offers for little money is certainly worth a few lines.

Aqua Marina is a typical aquatic. There is a lot of freshness here, coming equally from aquatic and citrus notes. I was surprised at how pleasant it is to wear - Aqua Marina comes across as really likable. This fragrance seems to lack any rough or scratchy aspects, as well as the often encountered synthetic quality. For a budget fragrance, this is completely extraordinary.

Otherwise, there are few surprises to report. There are no experimental or questionable aspects here, and of course, one knows this or something similar from elsewhere. For a perfume in this price range, that's perfectly fine.

You can get significantly worse aquatics for much more money. Aqua Marina is vastly superior to the various offerings from Bvlgari, for example.

Aquatics are not for everyone - I often feel repelled by marine or ozonic freshness - especially when there is also experimental zeal from the perfumer or a tight budget involved in the development. However, Monotheme's Aqua Marina has so much grounding that even I could imagine wearing this fragrance on rare occasions.

Hot Italian Shit
I admit, when it comes to fragrance, I personally don't care much whether the concoction is intended for men or women.
If something seems interesting to me, I will test it or, depending on the price, buy it blind.

In the privileged position of having a TKMaxx almost at my doorstep, I actually visit it (at least) once a week.
More for browsing than with real buying intentions.
However, this wonder shop offers my hyped Dead Sea products, or my favorite shampoo from the Baltics.
And occasionally, there’s a fragrance in there....

Currently, there is a selection of fragrances from the house of Monotheme.
I hadn't known them before, but they seem to be something rather "affordable" yet good.

So Aqua Marina found its way to me....
The pretty packaging triggered the want-to-have effect, screw it that it’s a men’s fragrance.
So the scent was packed for a small price and waited a while for its "debut".

Today, I sprayed it for the first time.
Holy Shit, what is this?
The namesake character, that is the seawater, is recognized only by those who live by the sea and have realized that "sea" does not always mean absolute pure freshness.
What’s the name of that chemical compound that names the scent of the sea? Right, dimethyl sulfide.
If you are lucky enough, like me, to live by the Kiel Fjord and smell the DMS live, you are somewhat favored by nasal luck and know that the sea smells rather "different".

"The sea" appears in this wonderful scent as a dark, warm, salty note within the herbal aromas that dominate this fragrance.

What emanates from my (admittedly feminine) skin is the entire palette of Italian herbs.
Marjoram, thyme, oregano - all with a wonderful handful of warmth and a hefty pinch of salt.
A little Italian I know would love it.

Certainly not a scent that the masses will like.

Beautiful scent - is it now gourmet or gourmand?
In any case, it invites you to take a bite :)

36 degrees and it's getting even hotter
I actually became aware of Monotheme through the TkMaxx forum. I love that store, and I found the Monotheme fragrances visually very appealing. The price was also good, so I read through some of the fragrances on parfumo and found two of the notes to be good.
During my last TkMaxx visit, Aqua Marina caught my eye and got to come home with me.
I've been wearing it for about a week now, and I actually like it a lot, but I can't quite grasp it.
It starts off very fresh and aquatic for me, not at all masculine-shower-gel-like, more like a lemony breeze by the sea.
The top note fades quickly, and what remains is woody-spicy but not overpowering, rather incredibly pleasant.
Excuse my vague description, but at 30 degrees and above, this scent is incredibly fresh, great, unobtrusive, unisex, and deserves a rating. Basically, I only smell the lemon with the aquatic notes and a bit of vetiver. The rest is so well woven that I can't quite grasp it.
The longevity is really good; I can smell it all day. The sillage is weak. One could argue whether that's a downside, but I actually find it very good at such temperatures when I use it.
Conclusion: 9.99 incredibly well invested - thank you, Parfumo.

Aquatic, practical, good!
Aqua Marina is not a fragrance to which one can apply Guerlain standards. It neither presents a Guerlinade nor surprises with an exciting development. I also do not associate it with sun, sea, and palm beaches. Perhaps this is one of the reasons why Aqua Marina does not evoke any vivid imagery for me. Even the low price encourages one not to have overly high expectations.

One might hastily draw false conclusions here. Aqua Marina is, for me, a well-made fragrance. Looking at the multitude of notes, one could almost believe it to be a scent from the 80s. I was all the more surprised when, upon the first spray, a fresh and above all delicate scent wafted into my nose, immediately reminding me of Acqua di Giò by Giorgio Armani. Both possess an aquatic freshness that does not have the sharpness of Cool Water but is rather subdued. Especially in the top notes, both are characterized by the interplay of marine and citrus accords. While Acqua di Giò softens after a while, Aqua Marina takes on a spicier tone with spices like nutmeg, cloves, and rosemary.

In the base note, I perceive Aqua Marina as rather dry, and the scent now leans more towards a spicy than an aquatic direction.

Aqua Marina is pleasing and you can't go wrong with it. However, one should not expect too much from it. Here we are again at the low price point. For little money, you get a well-made fragrance that does not have to hide behind any designer scent in terms of composition. The bottle does not have to hide either; resembling that of Penhaligon's, it appears high-quality. The sillage is moderate, which I prefer in summer. I only criticize the longevity, which at 3 - 4 hours is simply too little for me.
But for such a well-made fragrance, I am happy to reapply more often.

This doesn't look like a cheap perfume at all, it looks like a well balanced aquatic that reminds me so much of the sea, I love it.

First up is sage, lavender, bay leaf, a bit of nutmeg, no citrus. Then a sea breeze. The base is cedar-green, without sweetness. It's quite nice.

An exception that proves the rule. A pleasant aquatic scent with a fine herbal and spicy orientation. No nerve factor for me.
