Musc solaire

Parfums de Nicolaï has a small range of musk centered fragrances that hardly get any attention from the crowds. Well actually there are only three editions so it cannot really be called a range. But I know all three of them and I see a clear pattern. Each one is a classic approach to the floral-musk theme and they share a spring-fresh, playful character.

Musc Monoï has the same set of fresh musks as "Musc Intense | Parfums de Nicolaï" and "Poudre de Musc Intense (Eau de Parfum) | Parfums de Nicolaï". This time the focus is on the sunny, tropical side. Ylang-ylang, a solar note and a not-so-creamy coconut are combined to create this sense of a hot summer day at the beach. A big shot of calone completes that airy summer breeze. This comes in EdT concentration so it wears like a charm on sunny days.

Before wearing I worried that this may be going all suntan lotion on me. But we are dealing with Patricia de Nicolaï here and she knows how to play with suggestive, associative scents and to avoid stereotypes at the same time. So this worked out just lovely. Less tropical than I expected, actually, and more generally floral-musky. All in all quite a lovely and uncomplicated scent.

Fresh-citrusy is how this fragrance is described. But when I read through the notes, I can hardly imagine - aside from lemon, magnolia, and petitgrain - what could possibly smell citrusy or even fresh about Musc Monoi.
Monoi is a Caribbean wonder for women's beauty. An oil made from Tiare flowers and coconut oil. A nourishing oil, moisturizing and pleasantly fragrant, so it is described. And yes, Musc Monoi smells wonderfully Caribbean, unsweet coconut, unsour lemon, and petitgrain for freshness in the scent, a hint of hula-hula ylang-ylang and jasmine, magnolia in the hair, and musk like a transparent hairnet. The fragrance indeed starts off citrusy-fresh and then wraps around you possessively. The citrus turns slightly herbal, and you might even catch a whiff of herbs. It’s as if you wake up in the Caribbean in the morning, stand by the window, and deeply inhale the fresh air. You begin the day rested, fresh, and full of new energy, experiencing it without much stress. Musc Monoi is a beautiful, citrus-creamy mood lifter. The lemon is always present, but not sour or playful, rather mature and ripe.
Beautiful flowers, all white and radiant. Not cloyingly sweet, but cuddly, pleasant, and a bit infused with vacation vibes. Thank you for this fragrance experience :)
