Glitter ball
"This is grade A 100% pure Colombian cocaine, ladies and gentlemen. Disco Shit. Pure as the driven snow."

Within the Nicolaï line-up, "New York Intense | Parfums de Nicolaï" may be the community darling but its spicy-vanilla-fougere masculinity seems incompatible with me. I decided to sell that one and get myself Number One Intense instead. This is a lovely white floral composition and a close second to the miraculous "Odalisque | Parfums de Nicolaï".

Tuberose is clearly in the lead here, while it is backed by orange blossom and a heavy civet-purr. The feeling is prickly dry-bitter in the opening and warms up as a pleasant sandalwood-moss slowly takes over.

There is a powerful, almost stinging 80's vibe which makes this one feel ultra-feminine. On a scale of 1 to 10? Well over 200! As my personal taste gravitates to the green and white florals, I find myself perfectly comfortable in the ladies' section of the perfume store. But with this one it took quite a while before I could wear it with confidence. Now I can tell you, once you mastered Number One Intense, a "glitterball and spotlights" entrance is part of the package.

Hubby Doesn't Love
My OH doesn't love this one, but I still had to have it. For one thing, it has sandalwood, my favorite wood; ambergris, my favorite animalic; and three of my favorite florals: jasmine, rose, orange blossom. I think the sharply dank tagetes brings the ambergris to the edge and the oakmoss only deepens things, but to me it works. My first sniff was an "oh yes!" intoxication. Green galbanum in the top note and black currant don't really tame the throbbing indoles of the florals amid the musty stank. Even though hubby took one sniff, said "nope" and walked away, I say "yes, yes, yes." Not sure about the longevity because I'm either anosmic to it already or my skin is drinking it, but this is a dry day. It's probably becoming a skin scent, but when I wait and re-sniff, I get to say, "oh yes!" again. More applause to Patricia Nicolaï for a fragrance that goes for power rather than mere prettiness.

Nights in white satin
When I first smelled this, in a small perfume shop in Trastevere, I was blown away - a deep, sexy, green floral chypre, and very womanly (I thought). I bought a bottle. This is not sexy. It's also not a chypre but a white floral. There is a smidgen of oakmoss absolute in the formula, but it's not enough, no, not nearly enough, to spread a much-needed dark, velvety layer of forest under the feet of the sumptuous white florals.

And without the chypre bitterness, this is truly all about a big block of white flowers - orange blossom, jasmine, tuberose - bleeding into each other and smoothing out any of the individual, interesting identifiers of each flower. There are no fruity indoles from the jasmine, no buttery, mentholated weirdness from the tuberose, and no honeyed orange notes from the orange blossom. It's, well, it's 'Nights in White Satin' (I looooovvveee yeeeewwwwww) and shoulder pads and big hair, and it's also, clearly, Giorgio.

A friend of mine wears this, but she is a young, hot, sexy girl who has hordes of men panting after her. I think that in order to wear something as old-fashioned as Number One, you have to either wear it with irony, or you have to be beautiful enough yourself to subvert the essential staidness of the fragrance. But I'm mostly too tired to be ironic and not cool or sexy enough to make it ripe. I guess I'll have to reserve it for those special occasions when I want to clear an elevator and make people hate perfume all over again

Perfect pollenacious perfume
There are some perfumes that transport you to another world when you smell them for the first time, bowl you over, knock you out… whatever metaphor you prefer. That hasn't happened to me in such a long time that I'd forgotten what it felt like to really fall in love with a scent. Then I was testing some Parfums De Nicolai samples - a house that, up until now, I hadn't connected with - and it happened multiple times in a row. One of those times was with Number One Intense.

This perfume immediately hit me with an intense wave of nostalgia, though not for the reasons that it might do for others. I wasn't alive in the 80s, nor have I smelled any vintage perfumes from that era, so I can't comment on that aspect.
No, what this perfume reminds me of (among other things) is my childhood walking through the Australian bush in springtime, surrounded by wattle trees with their intense honey-pollen scent hanging in the air, green leafy odors lingering in the background.
As it begins to dry down, it also reminds me of many other things that I can't quite place, all from another, distant, wistfully-recalled time in my life.
There is a distinctly soapy quality that brings to mind all the most expensive and exquisitely crafted fancy soaps brought together in one room, as well as a soft, almost powdery sweetness that somehow manages to avoid ever being cloying or dusty.
Oh, and I mustn’t forget to mention the ever-present animalic notes, which give the scent a sharp edge that perfectly balances out the sweetness and softness.
In the drydown this smells like a quintessential perfume, but a PERFECT perfume. So perfectly balanced and blended.

Every time I go without wearing this for a while, I somehow completely forget what it smells like, and so spraying it on again feels like smelling it for the first time with all the wonder that evokes. I don't think I'll ever get tired of it.

She`s a classic beauty of a trophy wife.
A classic beauty that is majestic and imposing in all her vintage glory. The bouquet of white flowers is huge, silky, sumptuous, and projects like crazy. I find her very intimidating, like those tall, white, well-heeled American women you often saw revolving through the doors of Park Avenue brownstones in the 90`s, privileged, blonde, the Ivankas and Melanias of that narrow world. This is who I imagine wearing this in the narrow little bubble of the universe that the uber-rich inhabit. Gorgeous, well-blended, expensive, off-putting.

A classic ultra-feminine chypre. Dramatic entrance, white-yellow floral chorus and heavy civet-moss-sandal base. YES!

The florals and honey in the mid are so similar to Hugo Boss' Number One!! How has nobody noticed?? LOL Add a soapy base and BINGO.

Intensely floral, like peak hayfever season but in a good way, also soapy+green+animalic. 11/10 best thing I've ever smelled

Pollinic florals, primarily creamy tuberose plus some jasmine, with a green touch and a light sweetness. Linear drydown.

You have to like white florals with an indolic tone here, otherwise it can quickly become too much. Quality is typically good for the brand.

A feminine white floral overload from the old school with a lovely mossy base. Bitter and powdery elements lie in between. Not my number 1.

A lush, dense white floral orgy, with green mossy accents & a purring kitten. Great scent, but you have to be ready for it.

White floral opulence with woody spice, slightly tart blackcurrant, and a pleasantly animalic moss base. Simply delicious-classic.

The chypre lures me in with balsamic flowers that lead to a refined bittersweet dry down. For me, it's pleasantly subtle, elegant, beautiful.
