Does what it says on the bottle
When I think of Penhaligon's I'm immediately reminded of gleefully reading the trashy novels of Jilly Cooper, following the antics of Perdita Macleod as she empties bottles of Quercus whilst swilling large amounts of Vodka and smoking endless cigarettes. The premise here was that her husband Jake bought her Quercus so that she would stop using his CK One ... I never quite got that because the former is WAY more pricy than the latter, even though they smell the same.

I have sampled Quercus and found it wanting ... not so with Elizabethan Rose. If an antiquated 'English' Rose is what you are after then look no further. This is gloriously old fashioned ... so much so that one could close one's eyes and immediately be transported to the set of 'Elizabeth', and quite imagine Cate Blanchett smelling like this in her portrayal of the Virgin Queen. It definitely does what it says on the bottle! While the sillage is not all that much to write home about, the longevity here is better than most Penhaligon offerings ... at least 3 hours on my perfume munching skin.

For my money, however, there is no need to shell out the ludicrous asking price for this. Get yourself a bottle of Perfumers Workshop Tea Rose ... it's just as good and way easier on the wallet.

In the pavilion
After reading the news that Penhaligon's will give the official scent (Querqus) to the fashion week in London, I wanted to wear something from them. Since I am not big fan of Querqus, I rather chose ELISABETHAN ROSE.

There is a method of memorize things in the learning methodology, what is quite easy to me: connecting the learned thing to something else in your mind. Parfums were easily connected to places.

ELISABETHAN ROSE - if it would be a lesson to learn, I would say, it is a pavilion in a rose garden, where slow, warm winds blow.
Yes, rose means tea rose there. In the near past I had the pleasure to sample more tea roses, and this one was more refined than others. Nothing serious is happening in our rose garden. Mildly sweet, get lighter, get heavier, like the breeze, shows nothing forceful. Other rose fragrances are more sensual, ELISABETHAN ROSE is rather a comforting scent, and this is infrequent in circle of rose centered parfumes. It is a very friendly and nice fragrance.
Longevity is good on my skin.

Innocent old fashioned rose
Penhaligons has created a rose perfume that smells exactly like a real rose, one of those white or pink ones growing wild on a thorny bush at the country house. It is heady and has great staying power, so a little goes a long way. When I was a teenager I had a diary with scented pages and it was this aroma. That may be why I think of this as a youthful perfume, but I see how it could be worn by romantics of any age.

Penhaligons launched this scent in 1984. I can totally see this working alongside the flowery lace Laura Ashley dresses that were so popular with romantics in the early eighties. I still really enjoy this scent, and although it will always feel nostalgic and innocent to me..it is extremely relaxing.

If I can ever afford pure silk sheets, they will also need to smell like this! It's a fat lazy pink rose growing in the full sunlight of a park. This stuff has great staying power. A little goes a long way and you could even pour some into your bath...heavenly. Ever the scent for a maiden, the geranium and chamomile notes follow the rose around like a chaperone and keep it from being naughty.

Consistently sour rose
I brazenly prized open the plastic box protecting this at Tk Maxx one day, risking life and limb in front of one seriously pissed-off TK Maxx lady to see what exactly justified the princely sum of 69.99 euros when all the other perfumes were going for 40 or less, including some of the Penhaligon ones. Boy was the look on that lady's face sour.

Not as sour, however, as Elisabethan Rose.

The one good thing I can say about the rose in this is that it does not disappoint you by turning sour later on in the development, because this one goes on sour, stays sour, and ends sour. It is at least consistent.

There are not enough descriptors in the world to convey how bad I find this to be. It's soapy, fusty and very tea-rose-ish in the way that those straight-up rose scents from Yardley and The Perfumer's Workshop are. Very old-fashioned and chokingly powdery. My personal vision of hell includes being chained to the bed, sprayed dripping wet in this, and being made to watch golf for hours on end.

The Thorns Are Still There.
This rose has not only thorns but also a few drops of morning dew. I can also detect the herbaceous green fluid of freshly cut stems and a bit of crushed leaves. I have rarely experienced a more realistic rose scent. I see work gloves and a garden shears in front of me. In the background, I recognize the English landscape garden where this rose blooms year after year.

But here lies my problem. This is a wonderfully recreated rose scent, but as a perfume, it feels a bit too naturalistic for me. I miss a bit of romance in this fragrance. However, for those who love rose scents and perhaps even collect them, Elisabethan Rose is a must-have.

Enchantingly beautiful rose scent that successfully combines fresh green aspects of rose and geranium with the depth of rose oil.

The original, unmistakable English classic. If you had this one, you didn't need another. (Reformulated in 2018, a nightmare.)

It's definitely well made, but not my style at all: old-English rose scent. Still better than the newer dreadful EdP.

A sandy-colored stone house with blue shutters in the middle of a rose garden. The scent is naturally beautiful, idyllic, fresh, intense.

The best rose & geranium scent of all time! Green-fresh, earthy and rosy-elegant, a bit nostalgic and always perfectly fitting. Amazing!

Very musty start: it smells like a damp cellar. It's worth holding on, as a grounded, mature rose follows. Beautifully unique!

The rose "Amber(tt)" in dark pants,
flowers strictly pulled back
into a braid.
Green & woodsy is her army.
Intimidating is her nature.
