Hug me tight and tell me nice things
Is what I told my nightrobe's left side after the second hour of it being generously sprayed with Peau d'Ambre.

So I bought a discovery set and my nose almost confused this with Un Crime Exotique (that one was on the right side). Which made me feel as amateurish as a spoon-serving tennis player in a Grand Chelem. (It also made it quite clear layering the two, though slightly redundant, is fantastic).

Peau d'Ambre opens dry warm, evolves sweet warm, and ends up powdery warm. You know, like a giant baby hugging you.

Make of that what you will. I love this thing and ended up getting a bottle. The drydown is absolutely superb.

Overcoming the Pine Needle
I have a mixed relationship with coniferous scents, particularly pine needle. Two important, emotionally contrasting olfactory experiences illustrate this.

1) One of the nurturing measures in my childhood - I was always delicate, especially in winter - included, in addition to taking tonics and light therapy with a sun lamp at my pediatrician's, cozy warm baths.

My mother was convinced that herbal baths were particularly effective and alternated the following as bath additives for me:

- Rosemary to strengthen my weak circulation
- Lemon balm to strengthen my overly sensitive nervous system
- Eucalyptus for combating colds
- Fir for --- yes, for what actually?? I don’t know. Just that I should also bathe in it and enjoyed it.

These are beautiful, warming memories.

2) There was this one patient, the retiree Mr. R., a World War veteran, at a time when some World War veterans were still alive. A taciturn, unfriendly, even grim-looking man who seemed never to have returned home from the war. From his file, I gathered that he was still suffering from a shrapnel wound that had been wandering through his brain since the war.

Wrapped in his heavy, almost floor-length, black, creaking leather coat, which evoked unpleasant associations, he rasped: "I request a prescription for my pine needle baths." Here too, unpleasant associations were not absent.
Even long after he had left the practice, the scent of pine needle essence lingered in the air.

These are rather unpleasant memories.

---------

Peau d´Ambre makes it easy for me to reflect on my warming coniferous memories from childhood. The fir balsam is the common thread, the framework on which the entire fragrance is built. Yet this framework is warmed and finely padded by sweet wood, gentle smoke, mild resin, and golden amber.

The golden glow oscillates on the skin, sometimes more dry and herbaceous, then again honey-milky-sweet. Towards the end, unsurprisingly, the warm sweetness prevails, without ever allowing the balsamic conifer to completely fade away. The sharpness of the fir balsam is so skillfully softened that I develop no medical prescription associations, but rather feel an almost sensual nobility.

Especially on uncomfortable, gloomy November days, it warms my heart and soul with its beautiful balance of cozy autumn evenings and comforting forest ambiance, allowing me to bathe in well-being like the little juggler in the warm children's bath once did.

Fascinatingly oscillating, yet always harmonious - how can a mysterious, dark coniferous forest being be so beautiful, deep, and sensual...!

Not at all Amber skin.. Christmas with a Christmas tree in a church. Instead of wine, fruit juice is served.

Just the amount of pine balm
that I can tolerate:
close to zero
more like a smoky veil
It lingers
sweet-resinous incense
on leather skin

Fir, incense, and amber envelop me closely. Beautiful, grounding + calming, but also a bit lacking in depth.

Frankincense with a hint of fir resin. Dry wood of the pleasant kind, slightly smoky. The touch of Ambroxan doesn’t bother me at all.

The sweet resin Opoponax dominates this sultry gourmand in the Layton style, along with the embalming agent Benzoin, without smoke & fir.

More lightly sweet resin than fir for me. Also amber + incense remain subtle. No leather. Relaxing, but too weak on the chest for me.

Could easily come from the SAUF series, here mild incense mixed with fruity lemonade-amber, unfortunately no fir balm - a bit too feminine for me.
