Boozy
Nothing here smells of the usual alcohol, it doesn't have those "boozy" notes more like a cognac with a sommelier's nose, it smells of all those subtle nuances, which will not be heard by a normal person who drinks it.
An aroma of blackthorn decorated with light grape sweetness, beautiful shades of dried fruit and caramel, subtle spices and tobacco.
A long luxurious velvet train where everyone asks why I smell so strange.
Warm and intoxicating aroma, there is beauty in every drop.

A Model Average Perfume...
Liqueur Charnelle opens with a soft pink pepper and honeyed lemon resinous elemi before gradually transitioning to its heart. As the composition enters its early heart the honeyed lemon elemi is still detectable, as a vague, moderately sweet red fruit laced boozy accord joins it in support of soft powdered blonde tobacco and vague synthetic woods that take the fore. During the late dry-down the perfume turns more dry and less sweet, as the boozy aspect vacates, leaving remnants of the now less synthetic smelling vague woods to meld with unveiled supporting black pepper and slightly creamy, tobacco and vanilla-like tonka bean in the base through the finish. Projection is below average and longevity excellent at over 12 hours on skin.

Liqueur Charnelle is just about the perfect model of what an "average" level of success smells like in a perfume. It has all the attributes of a winner, but the whole in this case is far less appealing than the individual parts. Supposedly the perfume is trying to emulate the general smell and appeal of Cognac liqueur (I guess with the drinker smoking a pipe), but while the perfume smells boozy and certainly the tobacco is there, it never really quite captures the spirit of the liqueur, or the tobacco for that matter. The primary spoiler is one that plagues so many other efforts... vague synthetic woods, in this case derived from norlimbanol. When done right, the stuff can be used to great effect, but alas here it is too strong, and gets in the way of the tobacco and the booze, ruining the illusion for the wearer and making them instead wonder why they wasted their money. The bottom line is the approximately $180 per 100ml bottle Liqueur Charnelle has some appealing notes in its published list, but the whole is much less than the sum of its parts in this "average" 2.5 stars out of 5 rated shoulder shrug, earning a disinterested avoid recommendation to all.

Liqueur Charnelle
Another offer in the Huitième Art line of perfumes from Pierre Guillaume is Liqueur Charnelle, which opens up… well, liqueur’sh. Quickly after the initial spay, the delicately fruity liqueur aroma hits the nostrils, and the tongue begins watering for the maturated in alcohol fruits (plum? raspberry? non important). However, similarly quickly, this good, nice impression is covered with the powdery, somewhat sued’ish feel. Next, a quick wave, we are back to the opening maturated fruit liqueur; a short hit’n’run, nice surprise. And then back we are again to that delicately powdery cloud of spiced up roots. Could it be the ‘blond tobacco’? There is a hint on that, similar to the other Pierre Guillaume’s offering: Bois Blonde (Parfumerie General).

Huitième Art has offered this time a ‘flat’ perfume – an 1,5h on, the fragrance remains in the same registers, presenting no further development (well, at least on my skin!). While this is not necessary anything bad, it may actually be more of a challenge; since the fragrance is designed to stay on a one line and not develop through phases, the challenge for the perfumer is to design it in such a way that its bouquet will charm us from the very first sniffs, and remain charming and interesting all those hours of wear later. Will the Liqueur Charnelle stand to that challenge? Let me smell in few hours and decide.

This offering from Pierre Guillaume reminds me of olfactory impressions from Chambre Noire (Olfactive Studio), which is also about powdery-sweet, warm sensual impressions. What distinguishes them is promise fulfilled: Liqueur Charnelle’s some softly piquant undertone of liqueur manages to remind me of cognac-maturated fruit liqueur, while Chambre Noire fails, overall, to fulfil on its promise of leather (at least on my skin).

Overall: Liqueur Charnelle has an interesting opening of what would be called the first ‘head’ notes. But as it is designed as the ‘flat’ perfume, its core fragrance is not, unfortunately, standing the test of time on my skin, and after few hours, it doesn’t surprise nor appeals enough, to keep sniffing…

The Fine Spice Bomb
That this fragrance is still uncommented despite several sharings surprises me a bit. Therefore, I would like to try to start here. Try, because I find it somewhat difficult to grasp this scent. I ordered the sample completely blind (I neither knew the fragrance nor had I heard of the brand until then) because the notes appealed to me extremely. When it finally arrived, I immediately sprayed a spritz on my wrist and my first thought was: "I like it, but I know it from somewhere." After a few days, it came to me, and I thought (don’t stone me now :-D): "Spicebomb! Isn’t it totally like Spicebomb?" So I skeptically sprayed both fragrances on each wrist and was relieved to find that while there are similarities, Spicebomb remains relatively constant, and this one has much more depth and facets.
Now to the essential part: Right after spraying, I perceive a peppery note combined with fruit. However, it’s not such a sharp pepper as, for example, in Epic Woman, just a hint. It’s also not a clearly definable fruit (I couldn’t say if or that it’s the raspberry I smell). The pepper dissipates immediately after spraying and transitions into a beautifully soft composition. I still perceive the fruity note, but nestled in a warm bed of gentle vanilla-tobacco and several spices that are also undefinable to my nose, which interact harmoniously with each other. None stands out specifically; they form a very rounded potpourri. Over time, I increasingly notice the spicy notes and the vanilla-tobacco (I can’t specifically smell tonka bean, but I suspect it creates this vanilla-tobacco impression for me), while the fruity note has receded a bit. This tobacco-spice potpourri lingers on my skin for a very long time, and I would describe the sillage as moderate to strong. I find the classification as unisex quite justified, as the fragrance, despite its sweetness, is not overly feminine, but also not classically masculine. Men who enjoy sweet-spicy scents are likely to appreciate this one as well.
Despite the fact that Liqueur Charnelle appeals to me and the fragrance notes are actually exactly what I like, this certain spark just doesn’t ignite for me. That feeling when you smell a fragrance and it fascinates you immediately and captivates you. I wonder what it is in this specific case, as the fragrance really has nothing that I concretely dislike: Is it that I have already smelled so many similar ones and (even if unconsciously) compare it with the others? I will definitely continue to test it, not in the hope that it will become a candidate for a bottle purchase, but simply as a change from my other fragrances that I wear so often and to perhaps discover even more facets.

Tobacco, Elemi, Tonka, and many spices create a lovely and rather subtle scent for the cooler season. Pleasant.

You become more sour in the dry down, and so will I. Dear art wood creation, we tried, but our paths part here.

I'm about to hum a love song. Spicy raspberry with tonka. Pleasantly fresh-woody-berry-spicy. What a lovely blend.

The proof that liqueur doesn't always have to be super sweet. This spicy-resinous-fruity mix with subtle sweetness feels "playfully" grown-up.

Could also be a *Mon Chéri, basically the precursor to Lost Cherry. Let's forget about raspberry, it's more like woodruff ;) Almond/persipan/liqueur.

It really smells like Spice Bomb and especially very similar to 1899! Spicy tobacco sweetness meets sweet fruit, unfortunately 4 months too late!

Smoky berry liqueur with a slightly sharp bitterness. I picture a young lady in a black masculine suit with a cigar in her mouth.
