Apex: The Sausage Slayer?
I had the chance to test Apex on skin at the Burlington Arcade shop in London, and let me tell you - I totally see the comparison to Sauvage Elixir, especially during the dry down. Apex is like the refined, sophisticated older brother in this scenario.
While Sauvage has its charm, Apex feels even more polished and expertly blended.

Apex was created by master perfumer Roja Dove and launched in 2022 as part of his luxury fragrance line. With its animalic, woody, and spicy notes, it’s designed to channel confidence and power, hence the name "Apex." And yes, it delivers on that premise.

For the first two hours, the projection is what I’d call beast mode and I don’t throw that term around lightly. If you want to turn heads, this is a good option. This also means that if the weather is hot, anything beyond 1-2 sprays, will probably cause an extinction event.
Now, here’s my dilemma. I’m almost finished with my Sauvage Elixir bottle, and while I’m likely to purchase Apex next, the similarity between the two makes it feel a bit redundant. But if you don’t already own Sauvage Elixir and you’re willing to pay a (significant) premium, Apex is hands down the winner. It’s like Sauvage, but after a fancy upgrade.

Old men Dirty Dancing
When I was 10 or 11 my mother took me and my brothers to Dawlish to a caravan park. We went to a entertainment night, where the headline act was Cannon & Ball (sorry non-UK-Gen X and younger UK readers…go on YouTube they were huge in the UK in the 80’s) any way they were very well known acts on that show and the Headliners came on and it was comedy and etc and then it closed out with a song. Bobby Balll came back on stage and started to 'rap' (it was the late 80s) and Tommy Cannon came out and said " Woah woah woha what yer doin? Kids nowadays don't want the rapping, they want the Durty Dancin" (again it was the late 80s and the film had just come out) and they proceeded to sing ' 'I've had the time of my life'. Now you might not know what this has got to do with this fragrance, but if as I suspected this is an attempt to appeal to a younger demographic by Roja Dove and not the dowagers, aged moneyed spinsters and tacky nouveau riche; then sheesh!
In this there is a very similar signature of early to mid 80s powerhouse fragrances , in the opening I could not stand a very prominent citrus, I don't know if it was the pineapple or the lemon, but it did not sit well with me; and this being a Roja it could've been both and other citrus notes as well. I really could not wait for that to disappear. If that had stuck around I would be writing something completely different.

I am surprised how much I like this, its much better than the criticism suggests, and I'm not really a Roja Dove fan (although I do like and respect what he's doing insomuch of recreating a classic style of fragrance) I can see he was trying for a 'younger' demographic but like Cannon & Ball missed the target. Not a bad shot though.

Not for boys and girls
This is a truly extraordinary scent. At the beginning for a few moments, it is fresh, and flawless. And then comes the heart of...lightness. It is like wandering through spring forest or herb garden places next to the woods. The opening crisp is due to citrus and pineapple. The real story told by the bottle bases on the outstanding mix of labdanum, juniper berries, incense, tobacco, woods, lether. And yes, patchouli - so gentle, yet significant, in the set. I love Apex Eau de Parfum from the first sniff.

A worthy addition to the Cologne line?
I was able to test Apex in peace today. To be honest, I was somewhat torn; the various statements left a rather negative impression of Apex. A Roja with a bad rating is indeed something rare and unusual.

Before this review, I thought about what might be the reasons for the somewhat poor ratings and whether I might be too optimistic in my review. After much consideration, I am confident that my assessment is not overly optimistic. In my opinion, there are several aspects that may have contributed to the rather low average rating.

1. Some users probably only know Roja's Colognes and may not be able to appreciate those from Roja that are different.

2. Most associate Roja with Elysium Cologne and Enigma Cologne, which clearly have a more modern DNA; anyone hoping for something comparable with Apex has, of course, been completely disappointed.

3. Apex is more comparable to lesser-known Rojas like "Danger pour Homme (Parfum) | Roja Parfums," "Scandal pour Homme (Parfum) | Roja Parfums," and "Goodman's | Roja Parfums." The result here is that the buyer or tester receives a very classic DNA in the Fougère style with slight Chypre undertones. Some may have created a different expectation in their minds due to the advertising.

4. The DNA is clearly classic and not modern.

Now to Apex itself. Apex is a very beautiful and modern Fougère with a few modern additives or enhancements. I see in Apex a familiar DNA that has been adjusted and altered. The DNA consists of the Rojas mentioned in point 3. Particularly in the later stages, Apex has some interesting components. There is a slight Enigma DNA through the rum and tobacco. Another interesting novelty is the pineapple note. For me, Apex is a very good extension of the Cologne portfolio. I do not see any resemblance to "Aventus (Eau de Parfum) | Creed," "Bleu de Chanel (Eau de Parfum) | Chanel," "Percival | Parfums de Marly," or even Aqva Amara Eau de Toilette in the slightest. Please test again, because this association is simply not correct. I had 4 people test and compare Apex, and no one had these associations. I do agree more with the comparison to "Eau Sauvage (Eau de Toilette) | Dior," as this fragrance is a classic Fougère scent. However, Apex is more modern and creative, especially due to the pineapple and the rum and tobacco twist.

I also cannot understand why some always see this scent as only for old men. I am also significantly under 30 and see Apex as a modern fragrance for today's gentleman. No, Apex is not a pantydropper; anyone hoping for such a thing from Roja unfortunately does not understand the Roja brand and its typical clientele. Unfortunately, some also seem to make no effort to explore the fragrance, because Apex is complex and profound; in my opinion, Apex is even the most profound of the Cologne series.

The longevity for me is very good. I was able to perceive Apex for 9 hours. The sillage is relatively strong for 3 hours and is even minimally detectable beyond an arm's length. After that, Apex becomes quieter and is close to the skin after about 7-8 hours.

I just looked at the list of similar fragrances, and I do not see Sauvage Elixir even remotely similar, because Sauvage is much sweeter and contains more lavender as well as some Ambroxan.

Neither Axe nor a new king to open cans, rather an excellent new fragrance from Roja Parfums.
So here it is, the new fragrance from Roja Parfums. As is customary with this house, the expectations for the scent, its longevity and quality, as well as the design of the bottle, seem almost immeasurably high. Such expectations can only lead to disappointment, especially since the bar has been set very high by the manufacturer itself due to its boastful marketing and ultimately the price tag.

I must admit that I am a fan of Roja fragrances. Not because of the bottle design (too much bling bling), not because of the marketing (“the FINEST fragrances of the world”) or the innovative power of the scents. No, it is actually the ingredients that radiate a truly high level of naturalness that convince me here. Nothing scratches, nothing clashes, and there is no gym-filling sledgehammer synthetic (a shout-out to Mancera and Montale) with longevity beyond the 24-hour mark. These are simply fragrances that come with a high feel-good factor for me, which I enjoy wearing without having to envelop those around me.

Many comparisons have been drawn here, with Chanel Antaeus, Roja Scandal and Danger, Nishane Hacivat, and even Dior Sauvage Elixir. Except for perhaps a tiny bit of the latter, I really cannot relate to any of these comparisons. However, I have only smelled Sauvage Elixir once, so I could be wrong here, as I do not have a good scent memory. It is also rumored that Apex smells like a mix of “x and y.” Well, I have never mixed two of my perfumes together, but I claim that the mixture will yield something different than the sum of its individual parts.

As usual, Roja provides us with a whole list of notes. (Marketing) notes or accords are not the same as ingredients, but rather consist of multiple components. Therefore, I do not know how a person should perceive all these individual notes side by side. Nevertheless, for me, two of the notes are quite present throughout the entire scent journey, namely cypress and oakmoss. I guess that is why many testers immediately trigger the red “grandpa alert” lamp. Oops, a fragrance not exclusively for teens and twenty-somethings, but for OLDER people, how dare Roja??

However, I would disagree here as well. Yes, the fragrance is not for teenagers and students. They should not really be buying a perfume for 300+€, right? I would say the fragrance is excellent for people from the “young professional” age, all the way up to retirement. It is indeed an ideal office scent. Yes, many fragrances with a chypre structure and oakmoss in the base can sometimes come across as a bit old-fashioned. A rather dominant cypress can also make a fragrance seem a bit dull and musty. However, this is not the case with Roja Apex. Rather, this fragrance manages to complement the more classically green components with an incredibly sparkling, almost soda-like freshness. And the result is pleasing! It’s a kind of Tom Ford Italian Cypress with an added freshness kick. By “soda,” I do not mean Ahoi-Brause. More like the feeling when you hold your nose over the surface of a freshly prepared lemon-grapefruit lemonade, with the volatile citrus components rising into your nose along with the fizz of the carbonation. This freshness in Apex, however, does not feel forced but is excellently woven into the green base. Furthermore, this fresh component surprisingly lasts almost as long as the base. It only recedes towards the end of the scent journey, after about 8 hours.

My conclusion for this fragrance is therefore positive. Has Roja reinvented the wheel? No. Has he ever done that? No. Has Roja managed again to create an improved version of a fragrance that I already like very much (Tom Ford Italian Cypress)? Absolutely, yes!

oh Roja Dove... your mediocre, over-complicated fragrances, inflated ego and insultingly high prices never cease to make me laugh.

Fresh, green, profoundly masculine. Suit and tie rather than casual. Classy, office friendly, but not overly exciting. Signature potential.

Sharp citrus in the opening. Afterwards, it becomes green, tart, herbaceous, spicy and woody. Cypress, fir balsam. Masculine and oldschool.

Initially uplifting and citric spicy-green, a rather dry and leathery spicy-woody Chypre, on a warm and musky earthy-woody base. Versatile.

Very basic and generic in comparison to the rest of the collection. Green, fresh, very showergel-like. Can’t say I’m a fan of this release
