black caramel
Gold-foil dessert oud. One word: sumptuous. This smells like sinking into a leather sectional, wearing nothing but black velvet and jewels. Something animalic growls in the beginning, but it’s quickly extinguished by a dark amber. The chocolate is perfectly bittersweet and the butterscotch is so malty and lush. I’ve never come across a fragrance this caramelly. The scent of it almost seems to warm the air. My favourite oud to date, which is usually a challenging note for me. Lingers for at least a fully day in fabric, but with demure silage.

Mental Snapshot: What a Bond Girl would wear to the Bellagio. Plush carpet, gilded chandeliers. She nurses a White Russian as she wins hand after hand in the private rooms. She smells good enough to eat, like a poisoned truffle.

tl;dr: sumptuous

Smothered in caramel
There is a sumptuous dark woody chocolatey oud here under all this sticky burnt sugar. There's gorgeous orange blossom and incense here, too, which feel discordant alongside the realistic caramel. I wanted to love Gold Spot, but it's just too much of a gourmand for me, and too sugary sweet. I love oud with gourmand notes such as coffee (Oud Kinam, Lao Oud), vanilla (Mysterious Oud), cherry (Oud Hindi), or chocolate (Oud Monarch), but these notes enhance rather than compete with the oud. Gold Spot improves a lot in the drydown, when the caramel is in the background.

DESSERTS IN A FRESH BARN
It opens with a bright citrus pop that barely has time to introduce itself before the chocolate and oud crash the party. Honestly, I wish it didn’t have the citrus at all, but it fades quickly enough. The oud has that slight, lovable funk. As the citrus slowly exits the chat, it melts into a caramel-chocolate-oud situation that keeps getting smoother and sweeter. Think decadent desserts served in a freshly scrubbed barn. Hay bales, wooden beams... Dirty-sweet, woody, and just fresh enough thanks to the orange blossom and that opening citrus. Delicious oud that feels like something you shouldn’t eat… but you’d still think about it.

All three scents in the oud trilogy — Gold Spot, Loudo, and Symmetry — were created by the same perfumer, they’re all his babies. You don’t need the full set: they’re sisters (not twins, but definitely not distant cousins either). Loudo leans cherry and sweet, Symmetry is fresh and citrusy, and Gold Spot basically takes Loudo, steals Symmetry’s citrus, and pumps in more caramel and chocolate (since Loudo already had a little of that going on). Out of the three, I still think Loudo is the best one. Gold Spot is the sweetest, more gourmand. So, if that’s your preference, go for it!

Oud dipped in dark roasted chocolate wrapped around some incense.
Gold Spot is a bold & sensual scent that screams confidence but is also soft and cocooning at the same time. I smell quite some oud (very nutty & animalic) in the scent’s core but it’s very well balanced with a decent dose of sweet, buttery, dark chocolate note. It’s not overpowering in any possible way. Neither on the oud part nor on the sweetness part. All of this is wrapped in a great doze of orange blossom, which adds a lot of character to the scent. Another thing that stands out both in Luodo and Gold Spot is the use of cypriol oil, which gives the scent some oomph!

The oud chocolate opening quickly dries down into a dense woody and creamy scent that feels like a warm hug. Where Luodo is a bigger, more serious Oud more for the connoisseur’s Gold Spot is more accessible due to the added sweetness where all the edges are shaved off.

Overall, Gold Spot is a promising scent if you like Chris Maurice’s DNA in scents. If you are an oud lover, then I can recommend sampling Gold Spot and Luodo both.

Peanut butterscotch brownies mostly
Gold Spot opens with a blast of fresh cut grass which is quickly joined by cocoa. Within about an hour, the fresh cut grass has slowly morphed into pencil shavings. At this point, it's quite frankly a bit confusing, until another half hour in when pretty much everything else in the presentation of a fuzzy butterscotch amber joins the mix. There's also a smooth sweet nuttiness like peanut butter that is much more prominent on my husband's skin than on mine, but I can detect the facets on my skin as well. After this point, Gold Spot is a very pleasant gourmand amber that slowly melds and then fades away.

On my skin it's still detectable after 10hrs but on my husband's skin it was gone by 8. Sillage was present but closer to the skin and didn't seem to trail much. I bet it would make a cozy bubble if properly worn though.

Sprayed on from brand sample out of Scent Club Mystery Kit #1. Worn about 10hrs at time of writing.

It smells like if a coven of witches took over a catholic church and converted it into a bakery. Delicious magic.

An initial blast of barnyardy oud reveals chocolatey butterscotchy loveliness that leans in neither too gourmand or sweet of a direction.

Similar composition to Loudo, slightly less interesting. Linear dark choco-oud. Minimal funk, approachable.

After a gently animalic citric-floral opening, this creamy/sweet Oriental spicy-woody Gourmand, settles on a musky resinous-woody base.

Chocolate Necco wafer oud candy. Then comes butterscotch. Points for creativity, but I just can't ... wish cypriol pulled more on my skin.

We're sitting on the fallen tree, from whose bark aromatic oud grows, and nibbling on dark chocolate. The day is fresh and cool.

Chocolate/caramel gourmand that takes you on a journey from lightly animalic white florals to slightly dirty oud fluff. For fans.

Drinking chocolate with a splash enjoyed in an elegant setting. Wooden panels around me and fine citrus in the air. Pure relaxation.
