Fails to meet the bar for novelty
Cigar Rum seems to be one of the most popular scents in the Strangers Parfumerie stable, probably because the handsome, complex aroma of tobacco absolute never fails to please. This is a good but hardly unique take on tobacco leaf - most of the heavy lifting is done by the tobacco absolute, but there's a flash of warm, boozy rum up top to dress it up, and it skips over the heavy vanilla or dried fruit stickiness of Tobacco Vanille.

That said, it does nothing special or new above and beyond the real baseline for indie tobacco perfumes, which remains Tabac Aurea by Sonoma Scent Studio. Cigar Rum is also one of the Prin Lomros scents that falls flat in the base - there's very little there to hold it together once you get past the richness of the tobacco opening. If you're thinking of investing in an indie tobacco, I'd still go for the best-in-class of Tabac Aurea.

This really does smell like a stale cigar and old cologne. It’s not in an unpleasant way, though. I was looking forward to something unique because of the seaweed but all I really get from this is tobacco, wood, and something vaguely sweet.

I wish Parfumo would either up the character limit for statements or lower the limit for reviews because I really have nothing else to say.

Spicy tobacco/rum, well put together with subtle sweetness
Sampling Strangers Parfumerie Cigar Rum, seemingly one of the more popular entries from the line that I’ve heard the most about, and it’s a straightforward blend of tobacco and rum, mostly, with a sort of complementary spicy vibe that consists of resins, dried fruits, mandarin, woods, vetiver, and (curiously) seaweed. I get something a little peppery in the dry down, though pepper is not a listed note. The blend has a subtle, not prominent, sweetness, due to the dried fruits, probably, with something vaguely savory, perhaps via the seaweed. Still, the cigar and the rum are (fittingly) the main story, and fortunately, the result is not too similar to other boozy and/or sweet tobacco scents in the market that I’ve tried, as it’s not laden with honey, vanilla, or loud fruity notes, and the booze concept itself isn’t saccharine but instead leans a little more acerbic, as rum in particular sometimes does.

Overall, this is a great blend, and resists becoming too sharp (between the rum, tobacco, spicy vibe, and seaweed), balanced well with the resins and slight sweetness. It’s an easy winner for cold weather especially (like the coffee-named scents from the line that I tried previously), strong but overpowering, and has a sophisticated vibe.

Cigar Rum comes in EDP concentration and the house’s standard EDP pricing of $80 for 30ml, and is sold at Luckyscent and Indiescents. Luckyscent also sells a fairly comprehensive discovery set of 2ml spray samples.

Havana
I'm sitting on the terrace. The old Cuban Luis next to me has smoked his umpteenth cigar today and is bobbing back and forth in his armchair. Every now and then he smiles at himself. Buzz. Or sing quietly in a broken voice. I don't understand a word, but I feel he's in a beautiful place in his mind. Somewhere in his story. In his life. Here in Cuba.

It's still very hot this evening and we drink rum. Lots of rum. The later it gets, the better the bottles. At some point Luis comes back with a dusty bottle and places it wordlessly on the table. He sits down and places the two fresh, clean glasses from his other hand on the table. He looks at me and only nods slightly. I see what you mean.

As he opens the bottle, wordlessly, as almost the entire evening, his nose lingers very long over the opened treasure. He gives both glasses full. A gesture beyond what could only be understood as hospitality. He leads the glass to the mouth and remains under the nose again to absorb the scent. I do it right away and smell the cherry from the cherry barrel in which this rum must have been stored for a long time before it came into the bottle. I smell dried fruit and this dark sweetness ripens rum.

It has the colour of the dark Cuban honey and "oils" something on the glass. With a slight nod - a silent cheers - we drink. Two men from other lives. Understood without words.

The moon is to be seen in the meantime and we provoke also it wordlessly. In the air Luis is still hanging his cigar smoke and mixes with the taste of the rum to a lasting memory.

Cigar Rum is Havana in a bottle. It is joy of life, mixed with the not easy fate and the obvious poverty of these wonderful people. People who care about every day and every hour. People who live in the here and now because they don't know what tomorrow will bring. Who can dance every day, laugh and celebrate being here. Sometimes singing out loud. Sometimes quiet and yet full of stories.

A slightly dry and salty, yet dusty earthy resinous-woody Mid season fragrance, with a lively boozy-fruity opening. Gentle, but lacks depth.

Like opening an old trunk full of grandpa's treasures in a musty dark room: cherry pipe tobacco, faded pictures & moth-eaten handkerchiefs.

Cigar Rum opens with boozy rum, dried fruits and prune, blending into smoky tobacco, warm resins and soft spices. Sweet and slightly woody.

Realistic rum followed by dried fruit notes of raisins or prunes, balanced by tobacco and labdanum. Very enjoyable.
