Sophisticated 1920s speakeasy smell
I really got everything I hoped for based on the name! This fragrance is boozy, it's smoky, it's fruity AND very well spiced... The tobacco note here is sophisticated and high quality, none of the ashen smoked cigarettes smell. I feel this is what a successful speakeasy in the 1920s would smell like. I really enjoy this!

Spicier, sharper flanker to the original, still plenty boozy and spicy
Strangers Parfumerie Cigar Rum Parfum is a 2024 flanker to the original 2017 Cigar Rum, a fittingly more pungent and spicy variation that nonetheless has the appropriate combination of rum and tobacco at its center, peppered by dried fruits, cinnamon, woods, and vetiver, making for a dry, sharp intensity that stands out a bit in a positive way, even if it’s fittingly a bit less easygoing than the original. The cinnamon and dried fruits pairing is expressed a bit more profoundly in the opening than in the dry down, in which the blend feels a bit more generically boozy and spicy. Overall, it leans a bit more gourmand than it does tobacco in terms of character, though the tobacco adds sophistication and antiquity. I very much like this Parfum version and want to do a side-by-side with the original EDP.

The pricing for the parfum is $150 for 30ml vs. most of the line’s EDP entries at $90 for 30ml. The line is sold in the US at boutiques like Luckyscent. The Parfum performs very well, and the value is quite good, even if not as outstanding as the EDPs’.

Kitsch Novel Without Kitsch
How does one actually react when a previously hated direction suddenly becomes appealing?
In my case, I tried to get to the bottom of the trick, sniffing until my nose was sore.

First of all, Prin Lomros really knows what he's doing. He transforms worn-out themes into truly thrilling narratives.

I received a sample labeled “Cigar Rum - Strangers Perfumerie.”

Well, there are three variations of the fragrance.
Which one could it be?

Sizzle!

I figured it out without knowing the fragrance, the 2024 version!
Davana doesn't fool me.

Cheers!

But let's take it step by step.
First, I get this dried fruit mixture that I have come to dislike, often found next to scented candles.
Wood shavings are all too gladly soaked with it and placed in a bowl next to the couch.

Not my decor.

Then a mandarin bursts forth, and the water-rich Davana redefines the kitschy opening.
Bitter, floral, spicy, darkly fruity.

Thank you!

"Red Skies | Maher Olfactive" smells very similar at this stage of the fragrance development.
Davana as the secret en vogue ingredient?

After all, it drifts into a more serious direction, almost coloring the fruity notes gray.
This is where the wonderful trick lies!

And with a gray seriousness, I enter the gentlemen's room of the fragrance development.
Wood-paneled, surely cozy in ambiance and slightly smoky.
Somewhere, a cup of grog steams, untouched.

The melancholic pause to reflect on the ephemeral - this is how fruit can also be modulated - directs a fixed gaze at the fresh cool spray outside the window.
Davana, seaweed, and vetiver make sky and sea merge into a silvery olive green.

Autumn.

No. An autumn awakening!

For a very refined and elegant rose enters the gentlemen's room.
No crude nakedness.
Extremely tastefully draped, light in its movements, deep in its intentions.

Are the fruits, the cinnamon, and the warm ylang skillfully tailored?
I like this long-missed rose from earlier decades.

Davana and rose now face each other, gazing long and knowing of one another.

Their evening in the cozy room will always smell floral, their maturity will be solidly underscored by the remaining components.

Both protagonists, Davana and rose, prove that the other ingredients are sufficient as a backdrop and should only act in the background.

And with that, I could finally make peace with the theme of fruit in the gentlemen's room.

Start boozy, then slowly transitions dry fruits dipped in liqueur and as it progresses you start to smell the tobacco. Wonderful.

I see an old man, suit and tie. He has a cigar and a whiskey. On ice. Golden brown. The cigar smokes, in the finish of the whiskey.

Freshly bitter Davana refined in the gentleman's room, a bit of grog in the cup.
Melancholic gaze of the dried fruit.
Then the elegant rose.
