Sturdy men's woody cologne

Sampling Strangers Parfumerie Lumberjack Cologne, which has a good classic-meets-modern vibe, semi-fresh, a bit woody, and midway between soapy and dirty, indoorsy and outdoorsy, pretty invigorating overall. Its main notes are mandarin, orris butter, guaiac, soap, cedar, leather, and moss. It’s a classic case of rhetorically asking “what’s not to like?” as it’s a pretty easy winner. Certainly it’s not as daring, genre-specific, or high-performing as some of the other options from the line that I’ve tried, but this could easily be regarded as a signature / go-to option in the line, as an everyday, year-round men’s scent, quite well executed, with decent performance.

Lumberjack Cologne is sold by both Luckyscent and Indiescents for the line’s standard EDP pricing of $80 for 30ml. It was not part of the sample set that I ordered from Luckyscent but rather ordered a separate vial sample, though Indiescents sells individual spray samples.

Lumber & Jack

Cologne-style is currently all the rage - especially in the niche. While many of Prins' creations have been quite complex and at times not easily accessible, he consciously takes a more streamlined approach with Lumberjack Cologne, without sacrificing his typical DNA.

First of all, I am pleased that I am not simply being "sold" an Iso-E-Super overdose for a forest. While I personally cannot distinctly identify the wood notes of oak and maple, I do not miss the otherwise ubiquitous, exaggerated, omnipresent "cedar" (ISO!!!) as a solo performer in any way. It integrates here and sounds quietly, like sawdust, in the background.

To stay in the imagery, we accompany a North American lumberjack at the end of his workday. He uses, of course, modern chainsaws, and thus everything carries the scent of his leather gloves and motor oil. Subtle, yet present.

In addition, there are very fresh, almost clean notes of citrus and iris from his morning beard and body care that resonate. Here we find the actual cologne accords again - a.k.a. well-groomed man.

All together, this results in a pleasant (cut-)wood scent with slight technical undertones and a well-measured portion of cologne. It could especially appeal to fans of hardwood scents, like Ormonde Jayne's Montabaco.

The top note slightly reminds me of Fahrenheit (gasoline, leather & yes, also violets). Later it becomes woody, soapy & somehow reminiscent of cucumber.
