By the stream so cool and clear
When I was pondering about writing a review over "Arethusa" in English I decided not to translate solely my German version. Because in English I found a different ancient myth from the nymph "Arethusa". And in my mind "it" sung always a Scottish folksong , arranged by Josef Haydn for one voice, viola and basso continuo, which I sometimes performed. Some old Scottish folksong-texts are a mixture of Celtic myths with ancient Greek or Romain myths:
1. By the stream so cool and clear,
and through the caves where breezes languish,
soothing still my tender anguish,
hoping still to find my lover,
I have wander'd far and near,
o where shall I the youth discover!
2. Sleeps he in your breezy shade,
Ye rocks with moss and ivy waving,
on some bank where wild waves laving,
murmur thro' the twisted willow:
On that bank, o were I laid,
how soft should be my lover's pillow!

" Arethusa Ancient Greek: means "the waterer". In Greek mythology, she was a nymph and daughter of Nereus (making her a Nereid), who fled from her home in Arcadia beneath the sea and came up as a fresh water fountain on the island of Ortygia in Syracuse, Sicily.
The myth of her transformation begins in Arcadia when she came across a clear stream and began bathing, not knowing it was the river god Alpheus, who flowed down from Arcadia through Elis to the sea. He fell in love during their encounter, but she fled after discovering his presence and intentions, as she wished to remain a chaste attendant of Artemis. After a long chase, she prayed to her goddess to ask for protection. Artemis hid her in a cloud, but Alpheus was persistent. She began to perspire profusely from fear, and soon transformed into a stream. Artemis then broke the ground allowing Arethusa another attempt to flee.
Her stream traveled under the sea to the island of Ortygia, but Alpheus flowed through the sea to reach her and mingle with her waters. Virgil augurs for Arethusa a salt-free passage beneath the sea on the condition that, before departing, she grant him songs about troubled loves, not those in her own future, but those of Virgil's friend and contemporary, the poet Cornelius Gallus, whom Virgil imagines dying from unrequited love beneath the famous mountains of Arcadia, Maenalus and Lycaeus.
During Demeter's search for her daughter Persephone, Arethusa entreated Demeter to discontinue her punishment of Sicily for her daughter's disappearance. She told the goddess that while traveling in her stream below the earth, she saw her daughter looking sad as the queen of Hades.
Arethusa occasionally appeared on coins as a young girl with a net in her hair and dolphins around her head. These coins were common around Ortygia, the location in which she ends up after fleeing from Alpheus.
The Roman writer Ovid called Arethusa by the name "Alpheias", because her stream was believed to have a subterranean communication with the river Alpheius, in Peloponnesus."

For my opinion the fragrance "Arthusa" is joining the antique myth in a sophiticated way:
While I was testing „Arethusa“ it was permanently withdrawing an interpretation because I was partly not able to identify single aromatic substances.
„Arethusa“ is undoubtable a very exciting scent concerning perception and impact. For my opinion I was experiencing a lot, was able to recognize many sensations. Nevertheless I am not adequatly able to describe or to jugde "Arethusa" .
Undoubtedly „Arethusa“ is a chypre starting tangy, spicy and bitter. Followed with citric, fougery and green notes, joined with a particular balsamic aroma. Bitter smelling absinth is repelling me despite my particular liking of bitter scents. Especially peculiar I am considering the permanent perceptible smell of the headnote all over the longevity .
Continuingly enriched by a tangy fruity heart-note „Arethusa“ is developing a subtle flower-blend flavour. Remaining always in the backround this very delicate blossom-mixture is as well fragranting in a restrained kind of cream.
Now I should be capable to describe something about the base-note of “Artethusa”. But to be honest; on from the beginning “Artethusa” is smelling for me almost always the same way. Because the development is finished within a very short time.
Since the base-notes probably are activated from the beginning, it does not make sense to repeat them once more.
ALzD is describing “Arethusa” as the image of the Sicilian peninsula Ortigia. Though I know so far all perfume-notes and those of the plants particular and single, I know them smelling in a natural environment and mixture quite different.
I would compare the smell of “Arethusa” with a basket filled with all listed plants cut in the heat of summer, while already starting to dry, slightly wilted they are fragranting tangy.
The mentioned notes of sand and salt should be evoking the imagination of a hot summer day on a Mediteranean sea shore.
Concerning that intention I am not convinced. There are no aquatic notes . Instead I am intrigued by the vaguely exotic and resinous-fruity mixture underneath the strong base notes.
At least for me the scent "Arethusa" is as entangled as the different myths of Arethusa the nymph.

Mediterranean Spring
What should I write about Arethusa? According to Greek mythology, she was the daughter of Nereus, who transformed into a river to escape the gaze of Alpheios, who had fallen in love with her after seeing her bathing naked (of course…). She re-emerged as a spring on the island of Ortigia. Apparently, she did not escape Alpheios after all, as Zeus took pity on him and also transformed him into a river so that he could merge with Arethusa as a spring (at least, if he found her…).

Now, with this background knowledge, imagine such a fragrance! Hehe, well, at least one can say that the scent smells fresh and therefore fits well with the idea of a fresh spring.

The fragrance:
Hmm, it starts sweet-citrusy with a sugared grapefruit, plum, and just a hint of fig. In the background, there is a slightly spicy ginger, which gradually becomes stronger over time. Despite the grapefruit and orange, the scent is never citrusy but remains sweet-spicy. This spicy-bitter impression persists, and now and then it even smells slightly bitter.
After this strong, but almost chaotic beginning (as many fragrance notes are working at the same time), you then smell green notes, but it remains sweet and also spicy.
I have difficulty separating the scents in the heart note. Jasmine can be easily detected, and perhaps rose as well, but the others create a nice, but not further definable scent.
Gradually, it becomes slightly stuffy, possibly caused by the many floral notes, but this impression quickly fades, and the floral notes recede more and more.
In the base, the scent becomes woodier and remains slightly spicy with very few fruity and sweet notes. A few hours later, you can also smell a bit of patchouli and vetiver, although very faintly.

Longevity and sillage:
The longevity is above average. The scent is detectable on the skin for eight hours; after that, it is still present, but so weak that you hardly notice it anymore.
The sillage is good, so you can smell it well from a distance without having to get too close. However, you shouldn't expect too large a scent cloud.

The bottle:
This bottle is also round or cylindrical and made in golden tones. It features a leather label on which the name of the fragrance is written in golden letters. The cap is also cylindrical and black.

The story of the spring on an island is well chosen. The scent really smells fresh and gives you a feeling as if you were hiking outdoors in a Mediterranean rural setting. All that’s missing are the crickets chirping in the grass, breaking the silence to make the incredible feeling perfect, while you are in a good mood but still melting under the blazing sun.

It is a fragrance that fits well in spring and summer but can also be worn in autumn. The scent can be worn by anyone, although the sweet beginning might still seem slightly feminine.

So,… now I’m going to google Arethusa, maybe there are enticing nude pictures by artists showing her bathing and such, hmm…. of course, just so I can see why Alpheios fell in love with her :D

Boring floral scent? - Far from it!
It is not entirely surprising that Arethusa is the namesake of a plant, specifically an orchid species called "Arethusa bulbosa".
While we do not find an orchid within the fragrance pyramid, a connection can certainly be made, as it must be clearly stated that Arethusa by Tiziane Terenzi has a strong floral note.

However, it does not stop there, as I believe there is much more to discover, leading to a truly beautiful scent.

In addition to the floral, quite dominant influences, grapefruit plays a crucial role. Supported by ginger, the Adam's apple presents its citrusy character, which significantly and pleasantly lightens the rather dense floral notes.
True to Terenzi's style, the overall composition has a slightly synthetic DNA, which I do not wish to criticize, as there is a harmonious scent cloud present.

The synthetics cause a bit of a "sting" in the nose during the first few minutes. However, the sandalwood in the base quickly softens the character and noticeably rounds off the scent.
I definitely perceive a more pronounced orange blossom, as well as jasmine.
I cannot explicitly detect all the other listed notes, but they certainly contribute their part.

In summary, we have a fresh, harmonious, somewhat synthetic, and floral scent, whose citrus influences are continuously present but fade more and more over time. Nevertheless, Arethusa is much more than just a simple "floral scent".
In my opinion, the perfume is unisex wearable, although I would love Arethusa a bit more on a woman.

Sillage and longevity are to be considered in the good middle range. The scent projects moderately without being intrusive or overwhelming. Accordingly, the fragrance is suitable for various occasions and can certainly be seen as an all-rounder.

I like the bottle; Terenzi provides not only the "big cap" but also a small cover cap. Some caution is advised when handling the bottle. One should not hold it by the "big cap", as it becomes quite loose on top after a short time, causing the bottle to slip from the hand quickly.

Flower Power
I ordered a sample of this fragrance and was very curious to get to know not only the scent but also the brand. Came, saw, sprayed full of expectations and now I am in two minds. Initially, it smells very sharp to me, which bothers me, but after about 10-15 minutes it becomes very floral and fresh, which is more pleasant. In the base, a subtle warmth joins in, but it doesn’t take away from the floral aspect. However, the sharpness at the beginning bothers me too much and somehow a slight subtle sting in the nose persists throughout the entire duration. I can't identify individual notes, as there is just too much going on in the fragrance and my nose is too untrained. Overall, it is a pleasantly feminine scent and you can smell the high quality, but for me, it lacks that certain something. Additionally, I find the longevity on my skin poor, average on clothing, and the sillage is hardly present. It is wearable for everyday life, even in the office, and I would place it more in spring and summer. I will not buy the bottle, but I look forward to testing other fragrances from the house.

The Fresh and Modern Feel of Armani Emporio He
I love this fragrance. It is very fresh and exciting. Perfect for the office or for going out during the day. Also a compliment getter. I find that the scent reminds me a bit of Emporio He, with the difference that it is significantly longer-lasting and more intense.

As always, I can't get along with TT. A wild mix of notes that almost cancel each other out: fruit, flowers, herbs, wood, chemicals.

Creamy sweetness with various floral and fruity notes. Overall, it feels quite generic to me and could have been made by Klein & Co.

It's not that bad! Sour grapefruit and sweet fruits with a hint of aquatic notes, before it disappears into a wild floral bouquet.

Indeed a wild mix: Herb-fruity fig, sweet aquatic notes, and a prominent, herbal-earthy tone. Fascinating!

Come on, 6.8?! It's not that bad. Fruity powder with vintage vibes and good performance. If you like that, give it a try. For me? Not really.

Richly floral & fruity puree; plum, grapefruit, fig coffee & salty-aquatic counterpoint on heather, flowing into a warm amber-spicy-walnut base.
