Root Freshness from the Niche
I just tested a fragrance of which I had no prior knowledge of its existence. A small sample of 2 ml, but it truly packs a punch.
And the content is modern art of the highest caliber.
It's a three-dimensional "Wandel-Vetyver" that smells wonderful from every angle. Sometimes the fresh-peppery notes are at the forefront, other times the earthy-rooty scent takes over, and then a slightly fruity-bitter musk seems to sneak in.
I can twist and turn it as I like, the good stuff is always at the front.
And "Vetiver Réunion" has a lightly surrealistic touch as well. A visually striking image with depth.
Sometimes in the shape of a tetrahedron, angular, rotating in all directions, sometimes a triangle at the front and a peak at the back, and sometimes the other way around. Especially when the "rooty" notes come to the fore.
Then it takes the form of a sphere, sometimes more, sometimes less in the shadow, rotating around itself and highlighting the small imperfections on its surface. All drawn or painted, as impressive as a hologram.
And it is a kind of "niche fragrance" that makes the "impossible" possible without smelling "impossible"...
It's going on my wish list!!!

Roots to the Sky
Vetiver Reunion starts off very woody, and completely dry, the vetiver rises up from the earth towards me. Shortly after, the characteristic cool-green scent of vetiver unfolds. It quickly becomes spicy. Peppery, a bit bitter. The grapefruit doesn't appear as a fruit at all, but rather as a bright, also bitter nuance. The scent itself: light, it even becomes steadily brighter.

This fragrance does from the very beginning what captivates me, AugustA, about vetiver, why I keep searching for the right vetiver for myself: It grows from beneath the earth directly into the blue sky!

Then, after about half an hour, the scent becomes a bit floral and additional facets emerge upon closer sniffing: a slight mustiness, a bitter sharpness, even a hint of seaweed. But also some kind of pleasant nuttiness, the famous hazelnut of Reunion vetiver? Well, I hope I haven't mixed that up. It's the first time, in any case, that I perceive it this way without any (fruit or gourmand) sweetness added.

I find this vetiver scent thoroughly modern, free from all gentlemanly pretensions that vetiver - for which it cannot be blamed - sometimes historically carries with it.
The airy side of this grass, the freshness, the almost ethereal quality, the lightness and coolness of water, all of that and more. A wonderfully crafted fragrance that manages to refresh the vetiver tradition subtly yet significantly.
The scent shines for me in shifting shades of bottle green, and after about three hours, a bright creaminess even joins in.

I can hardly stand the term urban anymore, since it has become a constantly and universally used synonym for modern, hip, and trendy, thus anti-traditionalist. But this one is it. Period. No barbershop, suit-wearer, or any kind of design item.

From the root to the sky, a success.

Vetiver Gives Wings
Just yesterday, I felt like wearing a vetiver scent - but the glaring Montale Red Vetiver spoiled that desire - and drove me swiftly to the water.
TO the water - not INTO the water - because it wasn't that bad after all.

But today, I cautiously turned Vetiver Reunion between my fingers, not knowing if I should take another risk.

No risk - no fun!
So I sprayed it on.

This vetiver is also surprising, as it seems to have detached itself from Mother Earth - and comes across as very airy.
You can already feel the connection to aviation from the perfumer.

Nevertheless, I perceive a slight earthiness, mixed with grapefruit - which wafts towards me.
I recall the glassy vegetation dome, drifting through space with Bruce Dern as the pilot.
He lovingly tends to this precious piece of earth with his two loyal robots.
As he ejects from the capsule, he still sees the last little robot diligently watering the topsoil.

Every time, I have to discreetly wipe away a tear - because "Silent Running" is one of my favorites.

Vetiver Reunion is not at all tearful, as it possesses an interesting lightness - and the earthiness has been transported to a different atmosphere.

Somehow spacey - or "Silent Running."

The New Vetiver Sound
According to the manufacturer, the cultivation of vetiver on the French island of La Réunion, incidentally the southernmost point of the EU, has been reintroduced specifically for this fragrance. They traveled around the world to find the perfect vetiver, but only the "Vetiver Bourbon" from said island could meet the requirements. It's unfortunate that this sweet grass hasn't been cultivated there for years. But the Berlin perfumers from Urban Scents find nothing too difficult, so they took the cultivation on La Réunion into their own hands. Quite a lot of effort for a fragrance type that already exists in almost all variations. Let's see if it was worth it...

Vetiver Réunion starts off sharply alcoholic, paired with pink pepper, creating quite a spiced overture. The vetiver joins in soon enough, but more on that later. The discerning reader of the fragrance pyramid might wonder where on earth the promised grapefruit has gone? With the combination of grapefruit, pepper, and vetiver, I immediately thought of TdH, but fear not, there are no similarities.
After a good quarter of an hour, a slight sweetness emerges between the pepper and vetiver, which harmonizes wonderfully with the other two notes. Now the grapefruit makes sense to me; it is by no means fresh and fruity like, for example, in "G.", but rather reminiscent of a dried slice of citrus fruit in a Christmas potpourri (of course without cinnamon and cloves). It's a concentrated bitter-sweetness that fits in skillfully. In my opinion, this brightens the fragrance significantly, taking away some of the grim masculinity that I always associate with vetiver, and is therefore, to preempt, absolutely unisex.
Now, let's talk about the main character, the wonderful vetiver from La Réunion. It is truly something special. In a statement below, it was described as smooth-leathery, and that fits perfectly. Smooth-leathery with a slight rubber note. The exact opposite of the earthy-grassy-rough Guerlain or Dior vetivers. Still, nothing here is synthetic. Everything remains airy and loosely intertwined and simply smells good and, what's great, completely different from the usual suspects.
As we move towards the base, the musk also makes itself known, further emphasizing the unisex qualities. The musk note reminds me a bit of "Muschio Bianco" and adds a clean fresh laundry touch to the whole. All in all, this is a completely different, really successful vetiver fragrance!

And once again, it shows that hard work and meticulous attention to detail pay off. One must not always be satisfied with what is available but should also take a step further. As we can see here, it pays off!

Not a veggie burp, but smooth-leathery vetiver. Like a young Encre Noir, before it turned from Anakin Skywalker to Darth Vader.

Metropolis, Gotham City, Urban City: the vetiver for the city dweller: less woody-earthy / rustic, but smart, postmodern, flexible.

Brown grassy, earthy vetiver. Never too much. Very natural and with the typically radiant pure Urban Scents musk.

If vetiver, then in this style. Sweet, slightly smoky, and green-spicy. Reminds me a bit of Fat Electrician by ELdO, which I prefer.

The chef used the same cutting board for chopping the peppery sweet grass as for cutting the grapefruit. It can, but doesn’t have to.

Great modern vetiver scent that reminds me of Sauvage with its pepper note. Definitely a compliment magnet. Test it out!

Deep black, smoky vetiver rises from the roots with a green undertone and clean spice. A must-try for vetiver fans.
