Cambrium

Good Oldschool Scent

After being very impressed with my first Urban Scents sample package, I had to try the Vintage series as well. The scent reminds me a lot of an old-school fragrance, which it is supposed to be, but it has been interpreted in a modern way. I find the subtle leather note here very pleasant, but overall the scent is a bit too heavy for me (very sweet).

Animal. Good?

As I already mentioned in my comments on "Eden Splash" and "Fatal(e)" by Urban Scents, the charming Paris-Berlin fragrance house of perfumer Marie Le Fèbvre launched five limited edition high-end fragrances in March 2018 under the overall title "Vintage Spirit - An olfactive journey through time," each corresponding with an illustration by the French artist Francois Cadière.

I recently had the opportunity to test the third and fourth of these fragrances. While I intend to dedicate a slightly more detailed comment to one of them, "In Between," I will keep this one, "Wonderland," to a brief preliminary or "icebreaker" comment. I haven't been able to test the scent thoroughly and focused enough to attempt a detailed description and make an informed judgment.

The fragrance description provided by the manufacturer reads (my translation from English): "Dive into a sensuality with retro scent through oriental leathery, ambery, and animalic notes, contrasted and contoured by forbidden juicy-floral notes. Created from an overdose of benzoin, vanilla, sandalwood, and 'wild leather' accord." Cadière's typically sparsely colored and somewhat psychedelic drawing shows, looking directly at us, a young lady in an evacuation suit amidst oversized fern-like and leafy flora, behind which two other somewhat threatening pairs of eyes (we see one and a half of them) are directed at us: that of a gigantic mask resembling an African face and that of an ominous green hybrid creature peeking out from behind her, which could be a plant-woman or a grasshopper-man.

"Wonderland" is once again a refreshingly unique fragrance from "Urban Scents." It seems to me more suitable for men than for women, displaying a rather rough presence in the first hours and remaining distinctly noticeable for quite some time afterward. The moist, rich, animalic notes, occasionally brushing against and sometimes crossing the line into the stinky, are clearly at the forefront for me. This makes it - at first glance, anyway - too forceful and unappealing for my personal taste. However, that should not deter anyone from testing it: Wonderland is certainly not an impossible scent; others will surely enjoy it, and perhaps I would too if I had more patience with it and a larger sample of it.
