When pale girls dance the hula...
Since I was a teenager, I have been ordering from Yves Rocher. Mainly the lip balm sticks, face creams, and shower gels. At some point, I also came across the "Monoï de Tahiti" shower gel, and I found it so wonderfully tropical and summery that the matching fragrance had to follow immediately.
I don't remember what year it was, but it was an incredibly hot summer. You couldn't take a step without practically cooking in your own juices. There was really nothing else to do but head to the nearest swimming lake or beach.
Now, I belong to the paler skin types, and that is an understatement. Back then, I was as white as a wall! Next to me, not only would Tilda Swinton's skin tone have looked like a sultry Latina, but people around me automatically tanned faster because my light skin practically reflected the sunlight! However, that didn't stop me from showing some skin and also from slathering myself generously with "Monoï de Tahiti," a scent made for a Polynesian beauty with brown skin and shiny black hair.
The fragrance actually seemed completely out of place on me, but I felt good with it and proudly presented it to my then-best friend. She tried it too and was immediately convinced. A wonderfully warm and heavy scent, dripping with white flowers and coconut oil.
With a pronounced scent trail following us, we arrived at the beach of our choice, a light breeze blowing hot like a hairdryer, and from the speakers of some borrowed radio from other beachgoers, "Somewhere over the rainbow" by Israel Kamakawiwo'ole was humming over to us. Thanks to my good mood and silliness, I jumped up and performed a little hula dance to the ukulele sounds, which my friend rewarded with an unending fit of laughter, but then she joined in while sitting down and moved her arms in gentle hula waves... What a wonderful carefree summer day!
While over the years I discovered other, especially fruitier summer fragrances for myself, my friend, who usually didn't wear perfume at all, remained loyal to "Monoï de Tahiti."
Almost 2 years ago, she passed away far too early from leukemia...
Now when I think of her, I see her joyfully and carefree sitting in the bright sunshine dancing the hula and laughing to the sounds of "Somewhere over the rainbow." And the scent of "Monoï de Tahiti" will never let me forget that image!
