Spicy, woody, incense mix -- robust, with something special
Sampling Hinoki Meditation, my second try of d’Annam Chapter 2 – Memories of Japan, and it’s a fittingly woody and a bit spicy, hinoki and cedar mixing with incense and spices (I detect something akin to a blend of pepper and red apple), yielding a sophisticated but fairly easygoing blend, a slightly more colorful, less sharp cousin to Armani Prive Bois d’Ecens. It’s an easy one to love, very apt for the cooler weather, especially.

Hinoki Meditation is EDP concentration and priced at $150 for 50ml, sold exclusively through the house website for now, though I expect it will be available from boutiques that currently carry Chapter 1. I’ve found the line’s pricing to be very reasonable in the current market, given the quality, vision, and in some cases, uniqueness.

Evergreen Metaphysical Store
Another D'annam that really surprised me! I had never tested hinoki/cedar/evergreen heavy scents. I was taken aback on first sniff. It smells like the inside of a metaphysical store, the owner just lit some incense, and the cool air from the evergreen forest is blowing in. For me, it smells Christmas adjacent, a sharp evergreen tree scent with that woodiness that feels comforting. The spices adding to that warmth. It is a crisp and cool delight! Smells like men's aftershave or deoderant in the best way possible.

Something about it is very alluring, I don't tend to gravitate to very woody spicy scents, but this was totally unique. I'm nostalgic for the scent. I am a big fan and could totally see myself enjoying this during the fall/winter!

incense and woods
A meditative and spa like wood scent with warmly sweet spices and wispy incense. Very Hinoki forward, with the opening being predominately Hinoki woods paired with warm and balmy spices. The incense comes out as the scent develops in a very warmly smoky and subtle way. A beautifully tranquil take on woods

Hinoki Retreat: Feels like a luxurious spa escape in a bottle
Hinoki Meditation is an experience more than a fragrance—it smells like the sanctity of a secluded forest spa, lit by candles and humming with soft incense smoke.
The opening is meditative and serene, grounded in woods and ritualistic calm.
As it dries down, it leans into a cleaner, more masculine territory—akin to a refined body wash, but still sophisticated.
It’s a scent I’d love to smell on my partner, though it shifts just a bit too far into masculine territory for my own wear.

Woody, spicy, almost citrusy?
D'annam fragrances never really land for me, on my skin they're often way too much of one particular note, and that note is often powdery. Hinoki Meditation definitely isn't powdery; it's dry, woody, spicy, and after a while it almost took on a citrusy note to me. At first spritz it smelled a bit like cheap cologne on me, and then morphed into a gorgeous unisex woody scent. The dry down left a bit to be desired, with it going back to smelling a bit more generic, but not unpleasant! I can see why the reviews of this are so good, but it wouldn't be a full sized purchase for me!

I would stress that I think my skin chemistry is probably doing a lot of the heavy lifting here, but if you also find that some sandalwoods and spicy scents smell like "just a random man, it doesn't really matter which one" then this review might be helpful for you too?

Soft and spicy—think mulling spices—with very little wood, and certainly almost no hinoki, at least to my nose.

Ginger, cedar, damp impression. Spicy clean BO in a good way. Light incense. Long lasting. Occasionally acrid sandalwood. Unisex, leans masc

Spiced, smoky, and a bit medicinal. It’s a woody scent that makes hinoki appealing in a pine, Christmas way.

A best hinoki scent I've tried so far. A classy dry cypress with a decent serving of spice.

Brilliant hinoki scent! Fine-woody, terpenic, herby-lemony.
Silver fir colors the fragrance herb-green, wrapped in incense mist.
