A Bite Too Much: Beautiful chewy rice and red bean paste, though its sweetness may become overwhelming over time
Strawberry Mochi is a photorealistic gourmand perfume. The glutinous rice and red bean paste are incredibly accurate, which might sound unusual, but somehow feels cozy and inviting. It’s like stepping into a warm bakery that specializes in Japanese sweets.
Oddly enough, I didn’t get much strawberry on my skin. The sweetness starts off soft and doughy from the rice, then gradually intensifies—probably as the brown sugar and vanilla become more prominent. It shifts from delicate and nostalgic to something richer and a bit heavier over time.
At first, I really loved how comforting and unique it was, but as the scent developed, the sweetness becomes a little too much for me.
Still, it’s a scent I admire for how well-crafted and original it is, even if it’s not one I’d reach for often.

Realistic mochi, sweet and hearty
Sampling d’Annam Strawberry Mochi, from the recently-released Chapter 2 collection entitled Memories of Japan. It’s fittingly doughy, fruity, a mix of sweet and hearty, with notes of rice and red paste, constituent components of the dough that makes up the outer layer of mochi. I think it balances out the sweet flavor of mochi with the hearty components. It realistically smells like mochi out of the box, be it a frozen / ice cream variety or something more room temperature, so I suspect that fans of the inspiration will enjoy the fragrance. Still, I could sum it up as light strawberry bread and find it good but not great or especially outstanding. Yet it’s up to the high standard set by the line, which I’ve almost sampled in its entirety, in terms of creativity and quality, so I quite like this and could wear it a lot.

Strawberry Mochi is EDP concentration and priced at $120 for 50ml, which is more so the pricing of Chapter 1 than Chapter 2, but still reasonable in the current market for niche perfumery. It performs well enough but is among the lighter of the catalogue that I’ve tried.

Strawberry Mochi: Review 12
Instead of being a more strawberry-ice cream forward scent with a subtle background of the rice skin of the mochi, that’s actually the main player in this scent.

Red bean paste and puffed rice come together to make a really enjoyable gourmand that’s surprisingly not sweet - one concern I thought I would be an issue, but is very tolerable.

This is good, but I do wish it was more of a strawberry ice cream scent and just ever so slightly a little more sweet, but I appreciate d’Annams attempt. This is still really nice. 8/10

Mainly rice and bean paste
This gourmand is more savory than sweet.

From first spray, it's starchy and somewhat 'nutty' rice and red bean paste. The bean paste is almost playdough-y to my nose but in a good way—not synthetic, just soft and somewhat putty-like. It's like this for most of the wear to me, with the strawberry, brown sugar and vanilla not emerging until the latter half.

Even then, the strawberry, sugar and vanilla are pretty understated and only appear on the periphery—I get a whiff of them in the air around me but cannot detect them where I've sprayed. This is a great perfume for those who want a not-so-sweet gourmand or for rice note fans. If you're like me though (not a fan of rice notes), the rice may mask more of the nuances of the fragrance.

Very Unique
Despite being named “strawberry mochi,” the strawberry takes a back seat to the extremely realistic glutinous rice and red bean paste accords. After a few hours I do pick up on the sweeter notes, which give it a more wearable almost floral quality, but overall this comes across as smelling exactly like the skin of a red bean mochi. A gourmand that’s not overly sweet. Sillage is more subtle but does last surprisingly long on clothes (6 hours).

Rice. Sweet. Warm. Rosewater. Earthy adzuki beans. Idea of strawberry from the sweet rose and vanilla notes. Cozy. Low projection.

Very gently scent with minimal sillage. Photorealistic mochi - glutinous, chewy, and sweet. The strawberry/red bean is faint. Lasts 5-6 hrs.

Glutinous rice and red bean paste in the opening that mellow out to a light pink strawberry milk.

Initial reaction: Ricey and bready. Sweet - like a brioche. Very little strawberry. Seems light/work safe

Barely sweet smell of bean paste. Powdery and soft. Captures mochi so nicely! Perfect for a lolita tea party.

This was more of a savory ricecake perfume. I did not get any strawberry or brown sugar. Going to try layering with the rest of the sample.

Literally smells like the skin of a strawberry mochi. It needs to sit for a couple months before the sweetness comes out but it’s so good.
