Delightful Oud Melange
SoulMoud is first and foremost, an oud perfume. With 11 different ouds and 2 oud tinctures in the composition, I get a big blast of oud right at the top of the perfume. The oud however, is not funky or fermented. Many of the ouds used appear to be clean, modern oils. Multiple types of Sinensis and cultivated Kinam ouds were used and I can definitely tell. I am picking up on the clean sinensis pud profiles like honey sweetness, and tea kodo. There are also many other ouds including thai, cambodi, trat and they are all blended wonderfully to create a nice, cohesive oud profile in the opening that carries throughout the life of the perfume.
The opening is not just oud, the other star of the show is pine. But not simply just one type of pine, there are about 6 or 8 different pine sap tinctures in the composition. Surprisingly, it doesn't result in an overdose of pine. I definitely get pine in the opening, however it is wrapped in sweetness and earthiness. The image that comes to mind is having a mix of sticky pine sap and powdered candies on your fingers, and you attempt to clean them off by rubbing them on the park of spruce trees. The pine really plays nicely with the oud profile, especially the sinensis and kinam ouds that have a slight green, mentholated quality to them.
There is also a really nice sweet, somewhat fruity and floral quality to the perfume that helps to really balance the woody tone of the composition. Peach, apricot, pineapple, grapefruit and bergamot are all listed as notes, and I would say I get the peach and apricot most of all. It is not a fresh juicy peach/apricot, but rather a more dense dried apricot vibe. More sticky sweet rather than juicy sweat. I don’t get much from the grapefruit and bergamot, and there is definitely no big citrus top notes with SoulMoud.
As the perfume dries on my skin, more of the other elements of the composition start to shine. A large mix of woods, grasses and other earthy materials amp up the composition and really transform the perfume from an Oud heavy perfume to an incredibly complex composition. Amber, oakmoss, patchouli, vetiver, labdanum to name a few, along with oud of course, make up the bulk of the base of this composition. Everything is very well blended and while I can detect oakmoss, and a hint of earthy patchouli, nothing really stands out as a singular note. In my opinion, the only other perfume I have smelled that has a similar base would be Vintage affair from Jinkoh Store.
SoulMoud was my first purchase from HOH and I am very happy with my purchase. The price is outstanding considering the quality of ingredients, and the bottle is beautiful with the hand crafted leather elements. My only small complaint would be the quality of the atomizer. It’s like a fire hose shooting a huge amount of juice with each spray. For some perfumes this is a non issue, but for this style of perfumery, I prefer a finer mist and more accurate spray.
