Between dough and powder
Smelling Theria, I understand better what Luca Turin was saying about Iris Oriental (by Pierre Guillaume) smelling much like a fig newton, or fig roll, in that whenever iris and cardamom interact, the result is a pleasantly doughy-fruit aroma that conjures up a mildly spiced fruit bun. Theria reminds me of the steam rising off those little Swedish pulla buns, their egg-enriched dough sweetened with sugar and made pleasantly medicinal with cardamom. Though undoubtedly powered by a synthy woodsy note - probably Iso E Super - that leaves a faintly chemical aftertaste, the fragrance does achieve a pleasant balance between dough and powder. In fact, it smells less like cedar and lipsticky iris than reviews would have you believe, and most like a cute K-Beauty face powder compact that happens to be heavily infused with a 'cookie dough / cinnamon novelty scent. At times, it smells like a really, really light version of Hypnotic Poison misted through a flannel shirt.
There is this greige, fuzzy (almost cashmeran-like) vagueness to the scent is perfect, really, for those hours between a nighttime shower and bed, when you want everything to be quiet and tonal. Its absence of edge and even character is not the drawback you think it's going to be, therefore, but by the same measure, nobody is going to proclaim Theria as a pinnacle of artistic achievement. On balance, its meh-ness works for it as long as you're specifically seeking to carve out a little pocket of emptiness at the end of your day. Iris Oriental is more effervescent, less cloudy, and as a take on the iris-cardamom pairing, I greatly prefer it.
