thematic leather
Angel les Parfums de Cuir & Alien les Parfums de Cuir

While I loved Angel Liqueur, I found the Mugler annual thematic releases uninteresting except for the apparent belief that branding is more important than perfume. It might make the magic of marketing synergy easier to achieve, but slapping a new flavor across an entire line seems at least cynical and more likely haphazard. I suppose, though, that every now and again a match has to occur. It also makes sense that Angel, with its fingers in so many different genres (gourmand, oriental, floral) is more likely than Alien, Womanity or Mugler Cologne to be fertile soil where the flavor of the year can plant itself.

Angel les Parfums de Cuir can hold the leather note without it seeming entirely out of place, but the leather does nothing to enhance Angel. It muddies Angel’s distinctive qualities, but it doesn't negate them. Sort of, meh. Not exactly the Angel battle cry.

Alien les Parfums de Cuir matches a dulled leather notes to the radioactive jasmine of the original Alien, giving us a real head scratcher. There are no interesting commonalities and no juxtapositions to exploit.  Until the leather note fades, when it is ultimately crushed under the weight of chemo floral oppression, Alien Cuir just seems like a mismatch, more of a smell that a scent.

Mugler's Cuirs are by definition formulaic and lack inspiration. They seem to come from the same thinking that give us, "Ugghhh. It’s November again. What should this year's holiday office party theme be? "

A drop of Angel in a leather bag
I don't get much leather in the opening. It's like a more fruitier and less thick version of Angel. During the development, the leather note gets more and more evident but still difficult to pick it distinctively. It's blended in patchouli and sweetness. The drydown is mainly chocolate-caramel, some patchouli and some leather, and it's less sweet and has a more masculine vibe than the original. The longevity is like the long lasting original but the sillage is much closer.

I appreciate the more prominent fruity aspect and the well blended leather among the whole composition as I'm not fan of strong leather scent like Shalimar. I'd recommend it based on that. However, if you're looking for a distinctive leather note, I don't think this version of Angel will satisfy you.

Edit: It's interesting that when I wear it in winter, the leather note is quite noticeable especially in the opening. It's refined and slightly rubbery. Combined with patchouli and fruits, it feels like a new leather bag which happens to catch a few drops of Angel.

Angel with Apricot Aroma
One thing upfront: I have never tested the original 'Angel' Eau de Parfum, so my comparisons with the 'Original Angel' refer to the Eau de Toilette version.

After being quite disappointed with my first tested Angel flanker, 'Le Gout', I was initially a bit skeptical about the 'Cuir' version.
Overall, I quite like 'Cuir', even though the scent is not quite what I had hoped for: Angel, mixed with a decent portion of leather.

Right after spraying, I hardly notice any difference from the familiar Angel. With 'Le Gout', for example, I perceive the base or the entire composition as quite different from the original, but 'Cuir' starts off 100% as 'Angel'!
A few seconds later, a well-perceptible smooth leather note comes into play, which, in my opinion, fades away far too quickly. 'Angel + Leather Sofa' comes to mind, but after a few minutes, 'Cuir' changes again.

The leather note begins to weaken, and now the listed apricot takes the helm. However, the well-known Angel base is present from start to finish - it smells as if an apricot veil has been laid over Angel.

It didn't take long for me to realize where I know this apricot/leather combination from: from 'Daim Blond'.

I would even go so far as to say: If you were to mix 'Angel' with 'Daim Blond' by half, the olfactory result would be 'Angel Cuir'.

Towards the base, the scent does not develop particularly strongly anymore. The same progression as with the EdT is evident - just additionally with apricot aroma.

What I personally think of it, I'm still not quite sure.
'Angel Cuir' is not poorly made, and hardcore Angel fans will surely enjoy 'Cuir'. For my taste, the (initially wonderfully perceptible) leather note is not present enough; there is nothing left of it in the base. Thus, 'Cuir' is unfortunately more of a fruity thematic miss for me with a nice approach.
Not necessarily bad, but also not what I had hoped for.

The longevity is comparable to the EdT version, and the sillage seems a bit softer to me.

Angels in Leather Outfits
After all the Angels, here comes a "leather version" of the fragrance. Well, what can one say, Angel is simply popular, and therefore it is almost a given that there are so many flankers. Because who says that a flanker has to be bad? But it is also true that you either like Angel or you don't; in any case, most flankers smell better than the original fragrance.

The scent:
The scent starts off like a typical Angel fragrance. Intense and strongly sweet-gourmand, with the familiar honey-like note. However, it quickly becomes leathery, and the leather can be perceived very well, as the fragrance radiates quite strongly.
Beneath this leather scent, you can smell a hint of apricot, and the fragrance is also enveloped by a light, powdery note from the background.
A little later, the leather loses some of its intensity, allowing the apricot to be smelled even better (and generally to be perceived better compared to other Angel fragrances).

The longevity and sillage:
This flanker is noticeably weaker. While this fragrance also lasts at least eight hours on the skin, it fades faster than most other Angels.
The same applies to the sillage: The fragrance starts off strong, which is typical for an Angel scent. However, it does not quite reach the intensity in terms of sillage. Initially, it is strong for one or two hours, but then it settles back to a still above-average good level.

The bottle:
The star shape of this Angel bottle is somewhat more compact. The points are chunkier and very short. But this is also a beautiful bottle with a golden-yellow content. The shape of the chrome cap looks lemon-like (or like an eye). Because the bottle is held by a chrome base with points, it somehow appears mysterious, almost like an extraterrestrial artifact that would have suited alien fragrances better (by the way, there is a high risk of confusion with Alien Cuir). Nevertheless, like all Angel bottles, it is a very beautiful bottle.

So now Angels in leather outfits arrive. One can even imagine it being somewhat sexy if one is into leather and such :D

In any case, Angel Cuir starts off slightly stringent, but the leather scent quickly adapts to the sweet notes and smells good on the skin. I find that this Angel smells slightly better than the original EDP and would therefore prefer this one. Because it doesn't overwhelm you and quickly smells quite pleasant.

Of course, this fragrance is also an autumn and winter scent for women. The iris gives it a certain feel-good factor towards the end, as the fragrance takes on a powdery note compared to the other Angels.

I find the scent quite successful and would recommend giving it a test.

The best Angel of all time...for me )
I have a relatively large collection of limited editions of Angel and Alien. And this Angel is my absolute favorite!! I was lucky enough to snag two bottles back then, one of which was used up after just a few months because I couldn't get enough of it.

You can definitely hear the Angel base - just like in all versions - but this is a fruitier and more balanced edition. The notes are perfectly combined and give a round, soft sound. I can't detect the leather at all. But there is something that keeps the perfume from being too sweet.

Now the second bottle stands shyly in the corner and I'm afraid to start it, because this one will also surely run out quickly and this time for good ;(.

At first, no leather is noticeable. Then the sweetness comes through and it's clearly leathery. Really just for women? A gun with a holster.

Unlike A*men pure leather, leather is used more delicately here - it wouldn't have hurt the men's version either.

I love Ur-Angel, but only in small doses. I like the bitter note that tones down the sweetness a bit. Looking forward to the cold days.

Soft, apricot-sweet leather. The resemblance to Angel is clear, a bit less sweetness and longevity. "Must Have" for Angel fans like me!
