Fruity oud dipped in honey
Luxor is my first bottle from Xerjoff and a blind buy at that. It was recommended to me by Smirky so I looked at the notes, realized it should be my "dream perfume" and decided to commit. Luckily for me, this was one of the rare examples where listening to a suggestion and trusting the note pyramid actually worked out!
It has two types of oud - if you aren't too familiar with fragrances containing oud essence, keep in mind it has a barnyardy twist. However, the smell isn't unpleasant or overbearing. Upon spraying, I'm greeted by animalic fruitiness, dusty cinnamon sweetness and punchy cardamom. For the first 30 minutes, the scent is spicy, animalic, fruity and woody.
The magic starts happening once Luxor opens up and its heart notes start to shine. Oud becomes less barnyardy and its woody quality is underlined by the more dry Atlas cedar. Combined with resinous myrrh and fading sweetness of cinnamon, the overall feeling is more hay-like and honey-sweet. But wait, there's more!
Simultaneously, I'm engulfed in a smoky cloud of frankincense and tobacco. At this point, it's easy to see the parallels to Egyptian culture. I can associate an Egyptian pharaoh with ingredients such as oud, cinnamon, myrrh, incense and tobacco. After an hour, the scent remains slightly animalic and fruity, but it's also smoky and sweet.
Performance is solid - I get about 8 hours of longevity on skin, which is sufficient given the myriad of stages it goes through. Xerjoff's presentation is great and the fact that it's under the radar allows you to get it for half the retail price at discounters. It's blind buy worthy if you like myrrh and oud, otherwise make sure to sample first.
