Noblesse oblige
On my journey through the realms of the great Chanel Extrait classics, "Gardénia" had thus far escaped my attention. A pity, but also no wonder: advertised nowhere, rarely found at perfume fairs, and when it is, it is prohibitively expensive, and this site has so far provided little insight. Were it not for YouTube's Chanel expert "Dacob," I would never have come closer to this treasure.

At his suggestion, I discovered the rare Gardenia here a while ago in the souk and immediately, despite the high acquisition cost, pounced on the remaining bottle. A first impression revealed high Chanel artistry, quality, and nobility. The bottle quickly found its way into the cool, dark storage... and was forgotten. On a whim, I recently decided to take it to the theater in more elegant attire. I like to apply Extraits a bit stronger on the spots recommended by Mlle. Chanel in newer formulations to get a better impression of the scent.

The top note reveals considerable power and presents a distinct, highly elegant, floral-noble bouquet of tuberose, jasmine, and delicate orange blossom. To my shame, I must confess I have never seen a real gardenia, nor have I experienced its scent. My research indicated that its fragrance resembles that of tuberose. As is often the case with Chanel, the flowers have a naturalistic touch, yet remain ultimately abstract - like an impression of nature, but interpreted through the nose of Ernest Beaux. It is pleasant that despite the slightly indolic tuberose and jasmine, freshness prevails here. "Green" is certainly not a scent, but an association that I immediately receive.

Overall, I find the scent in its further development predominantly linear. (The old) Chanel would not be Chanel if there were not further layers composed into it that accompany the progression. Soft woody facets complement the slowly fading, but absolutely not wilting, bouquet of flowers. Patchouli, incredibly subtle, resonates along with the slightly fresh note of vetiver, which gives the gardenia a foundation, a stem, and accompanying foliage. At the end of the scent journey, one has similarly "descended" into the gardenia, and delicate woody notes blend in. Musk and vanilla, often figures from the ghost train of many contemporary fragrances, I can only sense and they likely provide a certain roundness. Sandalwood, which I love dearly (oh "Bois des Îles"!), ennobles the scent.

Overall, the fragrance conveys high elegance and thus simultaneously a certain distance with an underlying, cheerful calm. On what occasion can one wear it? Good question! A suitable occasion does not readily come to mind, nor do potential wearers of our time. Perhaps it has also fallen somewhat out of this, our time, in which nobility and elegance seem to be mere quotes from bygone eras.

For me, it will remain a highly private pleasure in the future. Even after hours still detectable on clothing, less on skin, I can linger on the described feeling and take joy in having made its acquaintance. The 15ml bottles are now history, and Chanel has interpreted "Noblesse oblige" in its own way and will likely only produce "Gardénia" and other Extrait classics for the appropriate clientele, the (money) nobility of this world. How nice that I seem to have caught the right moment! Whoever encounters it, enjoy and indulge! ;)

Sparkling, sweet, heady, not too much. EDP doesn't last so had to splurge on parfum. They raised the price from an already high one!

Tuberose-heavy gardenia
finely spiced with vanilla
a bit of patchouli and musk
if Coco smelled like this - Hallelujah!

Full-bodied, round, deep & a bit mysterious ... my favorite among the CHANEL gardenias, as it has no coconut ... quite present for an Extrait.

Fluffy gardenia; beautifully floral with a hint of green sprinkles. Tuberose is undeniable, but in pleasant measures. Great floral blend!

A lush floral arrangement resting on a woody base. Vetiver and patchouli perfectly complement the bouquet.
