A Volcano in a Bottle?
"Grey Ash by Aurora Scents is an olfactory homage to the untamed beauty of volcanic landscapes. At its core, this fragrance is inspired by the transformative dance of volcanic ash."
So it says on the manufacturer's website, and as someone who has been fascinated by geology since childhood, this description naturally appealed to me.
For months, I "sneaked" around the fragrance, marking it and unmarking it, only to mark it again - unfortunately, there were no reviews or statements so far, and I found nothing else on the rest of the web. However, curiosity and the allure of the unknown eventually took over, even though the price of nearly €40 was above my self-imposed limit for blind purchases.
The bottle is designed minimally and has a good weight; the cap seems to be made of black lacquered wood or at least very convincingly imitated. The brand logo is engraved on the cap.
The fragrance itself is fruity-spicy, slightly sweet, and earthy, thus hitting the intended volcanic association quite well.
The top note quickly transitions into the heart note, and it seems to me that amber and incense from the base note are already playing a role. I do not perceive aquatic notes or orange blossom, and coffee and suede are only minimal.
Applied at noon, the fragrance lasted into the evening and was still present on the skin for a while.
I consider Grey Ash to be unisex suitable, probably best suited for evenings or going out.
I see a certain similarity in the mood (denglisch: "vibe") with "By the Fireplace | Maison Margiela," although it is somewhat less smoky than that one. I could imagine that fans of By the Fireplace might also like Grey Ash.
Personally, I quite like the fragrance, and the basic idea is really exciting; however, I miss a bit of the "mineral" aspect, meaning: less sweetness and more earthy bitterness would surely have rounded out the image of a volcano.
In that respect, the blind purchase was unfortunately not a success for me. But my taste is certainly not the measure of all things ;) and so I can confidently give a favorable recommendation for Grey Ash.
