Discovery Sets: Parfums de Marly - Masculine Discovery Set
Around Christmastime last year, I treated myself a discovery set from the house of Parfums de Marly. It was the first discovery set I ever ordered from the house themselves so I figured I'd share my experience with Parfumo.

I didn't own any fragrance of Parfums de Marly (PdM for short) but I smelled a couple of them when on holiday, citytripping and thus I ordered a couple of decants from a decanter. Those being Carlisle and
Herod I believe. Already impressed and very much in love with those offerings, I discovered that the house has some nice discovery sets. Me being male, ordered the masculine discovery set. The great part of this is that if you decide to fall in love yourself too, you get a coupon code when you buy a full bottle. So say that the discovery set is 37 euros (free shipping!), you get a 37 discount on a full bottle purchase. Caching!

So what's in the set? There's 1.5ml / 0.05oz of the following fragrances:
- Perseus
- Althaïr
- Haltane
- Layton
- Pegasus
- Percival
- Layton Exclusif
That's enough to get a couple of day's worth of spraying per fragrance. And since it's a discovery set, what did I discover?
Layton
First of all, Layton. Everybody's talking about Layton. Layton is high on the rankings. But to me at least, Layton was new and refreshing. I never ever smelled it before on anyone. It's versatile, it's nice, I just love it and I want it for sure as a full bottle.
Layton Exclusif
It's so similar to the OG. But darker. It's super nice with its little oud-head sticking out. I was having a brain melt figuring out which I found better, this one or the OG. But I figured that if you want to go oud, you have to go all the way. I.e. the OG is the winner here, but I wouldn't be sad with either one. But it brings me to:
Haltane
That's such a strong, masculine oudy perfume. Now this is what I meant with oud all the way. It's there and it's noticed. It's tamed by praliné which is so darn nice.
Perseus
The exact opposite of Haltane. Super duper fresh and clean. Citrus, sour, it's like Terre d'Hermès Eau de Toilette with a turbojet on, and without the woody backbone.
Percival
A much discussed one as it seems like a clone of Fierce Cologne and it definitely has that same vibe going on. But I'd compare it with eating a hamburger in a fancy restaurant vs a hamburger of MacDonald's. It's just so much nicer and it lasts forever (vs just a couple of hours).
Althaïr
Sweet, cinnamon cookie gourmand. Powdery and potent.
Pegasus
Sorry but that's the only one I don't like. It's very white-floral which I find headache inducing. First time I sprayed it on, I thought hey I don't smell anything. So I sprayed a couple more... oh dear.
And that's it! I hope you get a bit of an idea. At least I'm very positive about ordering from the houses themselves. If you people like it, I'll report on a couple of other discovery sets I now have. Take care!
The dysfunctional sprayers, or rather spritzers are a real shame.
Niche houses should really step their game up, only Amouage is up to standard (proper glass, pressurized).
