False advertising, with benzoin doing all the incense work
Botafumeiro is named for the massive censer in Santiago de Compostela Cathedral that takes several men to swing. But naming a perfume this and then omitting to put any frankincense and myrrh in it is like advertising a vegan restaurant with pictures of rotisserie chicken.

Botafumeiro is a rather plain benzoin-patch-labdanum combo that's been teased and tickled until curlicues of sugar and smoke materialize at the edges. Benzoin has been called in to do all the heavy lifting - you're essentially paying niche prices to see benzoin strut its natural stuff. Benzoin is one of those raw materials that is so subtly complex that you can just massage it in, leave it to its own devices, and it will always smell like you've done a lot more than you have.

I love benzoin. It can smell like brown paper, cassonade, coffee, the pages of an old book, burnt sugar, cinnamon, and Communion wafers. All those facets come out to play here, but keep in mind that the natural spectrum of benzoin runs a narrow path between buff and brown. It's gorgeous, but there are no peaks and valleys to it. Past the initial burnt sugar rush, the scent's main building block is coaxed into a faint incense shape and darkened with a brown-butter combination of nutmeg, patchouli, and a rather chemically dry aromachemical (Mystikal) in the base.

It smells good, but then again, benzoin itself smells good. Therefore, though undeniably likeable, Botafumeiro doesn't deliver the goods I expect from a high-priced niche scent. It doesn't smell like an awful lot of effort went into it.

Advent, Advent... the incense burner is burning
So, even though Christmas is already over, the last 5 fragrances from my advent calendar still need to be reviewed, so let's continue with...

Door no. 20:

Botafumeiro is a fascinating fragrance that successfully combines spicy, resinous, sweet and woody notes. For me, it is a prime example of how incense can be used in a perfume without the fragrance smelling too much like the Catholic Church. Instead, it is modern, elegant and ideal for special occasions, especially in the evening.

I sniffed the following fragrance notes on my skin after the test:
Pepper, nutmeg, incense, cistus, lily of the valley, patchouli, styrax, amber.

What I particularly like is the balance between the notes. The pink pepper opens the fragrance with a spicy, slightly sharp freshness that immediately catches the eye, or rather the nose. The nutmeg note is more subtle, but still present and gives the opening a gentle warmth. I am not consciously aware of any citrus notes.

The incense in the heart, to which the fragrance owes its name, is absolutely successful. Although it dominates, it is perfectly complemented by the resinous sweetness and floral accents, such as lily of the valley. Despite its depth and intensity, the fragrance does not come across as too heavy or dark.

The base notes are particularly remarkable. The earthy patchouli and warm styrax harmonize perfectly and lend the fragrance a sensual yet masculine note. Amber rounds everything off with a gentle sweetness that lingers on the skin for a long time.

For me, Botafumeiro is a fragrance that has class and character. It is perfect for evenings when you want to make an impression. Although I find it rather masculine, it could also be worn by women who like intense and spicy fragrances.

An amber-incense fragrance that stands out without being overpowering... if you are looking for something like this, then you should try this fragrance.

Pause and enjoy
I've always liked incense scents. Not all of them are wearable of course, but they know to inspire me almost all of them. The versatility of this fragrance is always surprising to me. Incense can seem cold, cool and even very warm, depending on how it is interwoven with the other notes. From church walls to freshly washed laundry, this fragrance has everything.

One that I am currently very enthusiastic about is Botafumeiro by Carner. This incense is extremely bright and brings a sweetness and softness that makes it shine. This impression often arises when incense meets floral notes. Here, cistus, lily of the valley and freesia are involved. The white musk in the base also enhances this radiant effect. I almost tapped on a hint of vanilla, as we also have in Lye by Gabriella Chieffo.

The scent never gets too sweet. On the contrary. For my nose, it oscillates beautifully between warmth and coolness. For me it would clearly be a business fragrance to emphasize my more serious side, just like L'Ether from IUNX is. I even go one step further. Had I blindly tested this beautiful scent from Carner, I would probably have first tapped on a scent from Olivia Giacobetti. She always manages to play this special game with warm and cool tones masterfully. Whereby Madame Giacobetti usually does not work with this subliminal, fine and yet light sweetness that the botafumeiro brings. That might have made me wonder.

Long story short. This fragrance is made for all incense lovers. In the same way it could inspire friends of Lye or Bois d'Iris. And if you have a soft spot for the works of Madame Giacobetti, such as Passage d'Enfer, you should definitely try Botafumeiro, even if it is a little sweeter. The scent is gentle, reserved, but also serious and contemplative. White clouds of smoke rise up into the azure blue sky. A fragrance to pause and enjoy the moment to the full.

Many thanks to Floyd for another wonderful fragrance. If I didn't already own L'Ether and Lye, it would be mine.

Pepper and nutmeg are followed by a rich, slightly smoky labdanum accord and sweet resins. Warm, inviting scent. Excellent.
