Not just for an office anymore !
REACTION!
So, I recently received my bottle of Tom Ford Oud Wood Parfum.
I generously spritzed myself and I can say - this is fantastic perfume!

PROS:
️ The same DNA as the EDP version, but darker, more refined, lasts twice as long on my skin
️ (The EDP version lasts 3-4 hours on me with a low projection, the Parfum version - 8-9 hours with a medium projection).
️ Lots of high-quality natural materials such as: cardamom, patchouli, pink pepper, vetiver, rosemary.
️ Balanced formula. OWP smells special, rounded, nothing is too much or too little, such a balanced fragrance is rare even among the best niche brands.
️ Thameen Carved Oud (a niche OW variant) doesn’t compare to the OWP version in terms of refinement, natural materials, longevity, or projection.
️ The fragrance is not linear, it changes significantly on the skin, I suspect the musks react very nicely with the skin’s “chemistry” and the perfume becomes even more intense after an hour than just when sprayed, becoming more sexy.

CONS:
️ Price! These perfumes will start at 429 euros for a 50ml bottle, which means they are much more expensive than most niche perfumes…
️ The Oud! I don’t feel the real oud, and with such a price, I want not just oud and sandalwood accords, but real materials…
️ On the blotter, the fragrance is very uniform and weak, so it needs to be tested only on the skin.

My CONCLUSION:
Those who plan to buy these perfumes must really love the Oud Wood DNA, because it is an extremely expensive pleasure, but without a doubt the best TF attempt to revive Oud Wood, as it solves all EDP issues: projection, longevity on the skin, fragrance progression, and refinement (since OW is mostly considered as a “for office” scent, whereas this version is more “for special occasions”).

Incredibly beautiful scent!
So I wore it now a couple of times and I'm absolutely in love.

It's quite similar to the edp but less fresh, a bit less spicy but smoother, richer, deeper. I actually like it quite a bit more compared to the edp which is already excellent.

Performance is definitely better with the Parfum, especially longevity and sillage. The projection might be a bit less in the first hour or so and afterwards the edp is already almost gone anyway.

Compared to Carved Oud Extrait de Parfum and Kredo I like the Oud Wood Parfum way better.

The Carved oud has a weird "fresher" note in it which I don't like and for me it's actually not that similar to the Oud Wood DNA.

Kredo is quite close to the DNA in my opinion but it has an quite animalic and dirty oud which completely changes the appeal for me. The Oud Wood DNA shines especially because of the very clean, a bit medicinal smelling oud, which gives this composition it's extremely sophisticated and refined appeal. I believe the Oud Wood Parfum contains quite high quality clean smelling real oud. Thus, Kredo with its lower quality animalic oud is not on the same level in my opinion, although the DNA is quite close.

The only other contender I did no test is Oud Noir Intense. So i am not sure if it's better, but I heard its also not so close to the OG DNA and contains also a bit more animalic oud.

All in all I love the Parfum Version and I think it's by far the best iteration of this DNA currently on the market.

Of course the retail price is outrages and the performance is a bit disappointing for the price point. But if you can get it for 200 - 250 € I think it's absolutely worth it if you love the DNA.

For me it's a masterpiece and one of the best scents I currently know.

Update: Today I wore 6 sprays (which isn't so much as the atomizer is not really good and sprays quite a small amount) on my clothes (I never do on skin) and I still can smell it quite strongly on my clothes after around 10 hours and it had quite a bit of projection up until around 7 hours. So I'm actually quite alright with the performance. Now the only issue left is the high price and the cool looking but kinda plastiky cheap bottle with quite a bad atomizer.

Similar to the EdP version
Oud wood parfum obviously shares the same DNA as Oud Wood EdP. I do not feel that it is darker, rather it is much more soft and gentle i would say. The drydown is more powdery and balsamic.

It is still a good perfume. Great for the office and generally a safe scent to wear. I personally would never pay retail price for this, insane pricing for this simple perfume. And you can also argue why they even made a flanker instead of bringing Oud Wood back to its old self. Cash grab is the trend.

Scent: 8/10
Longevity: 8.5/10
Sillage: 6.5/10
Projection: 7/10

Farewell Letter to Tom Ford
A few years ago, I dove into the world of luxurious fragrances through the Tom Ford brand. I remember it as if it were yesterday. During a city trip to Berlin, I visited the Berlin KaDeWe on a cold, rainy autumn day and entered a new world for me.

A young, attractive lady at the Tom Ford counter showed me various fragrances from the brand, and I was instantly smitten. Of course, I mean by the fragrances, just to avoid any misunderstandings. And then came the moment. I smelled the iconic Oud Wood Eau de Parfum for the first time and was speechless.

I had never smelled anything so beautiful before. It was like a drug, as I had to keep smelling my wrist. What would I give to be able to smell this fragrance for the first time again? I bought it that day, and shortly thereafter, I also got the Ombré Leather (2018) Eau de Parfum.

It sounds silly and is probably silly, but I felt different when I went out on the street wearing one of these fragrances. A magical aura enveloped me. I only used the perfume on special occasions so that this magic would never become mundane for me.

Several of my friends also bought the Oud Wood Eau de Parfum shortly afterward because they too were fascinated by this woody, spicy-sweet scent.

For a long time, nothing came close to Oud Wood for me. It was my holy grail. Since then, several years have passed, and the Oud Wood Eau de Parfum still stands in my small, well-organized collection. The longevity is now a joke, but it holds a special place in my heart.

I followed the release of the new Oud Wood Parfum with great interest, and once again, I was speechless. However, this time due to the audacity that the Tom Ford brand shows towards its loyal customers!

The Oud Wood Eau de Parfum has felt increasingly diluted each year until the longevity became so poor that even at a price of €40, one would be disappointed with the quality of the perfume. How does the Tom Ford brand respond to the growing criticism from many customers?

They release a "new" Oud Wood that simply has the longevity of the old version of the Oud Wood Eau de Parfum and charge €390 for 50ml. That is a big middle finger to all loyal customers!

I am aware that we are talking about a luxury brand aimed at a specific target group. But at some point, enough is enough.

Does the new Oud Wood Parfum smell good? Of course! Has it been slightly revised? Naturally. Do you need the new Oud Wood if you want to perceive this wonderful scent for more than two hours? Absolutely! Because with the "old" Oud Wood, two hours of longevity is already optimistic.

I addressed the poor longevity at the official Tom Ford Store in Munich because I gifted my wife Lost Cherry Eau de Parfum for her birthday, and the longevity there is also an outrageous disgrace. Now hold on tight.

Since I bought the Lost Cherry at Breuninger (and not at his store), the salesperson at the TF Store wanted to tell me that it must be a fake product. Excuse me!?

Sorry, but I do not want to support such arrogance and audacity any longer. When my fragrance journey began a few years ago with Oud Wood, I did not know that other mothers also have beautiful daughters. Uh, I mean other brands have good fragrances.

It’s a pity that my review has turned out this way because I really love this scent.

I am worth it... or am I?
Oud Wood and I - it's a kind of love story: My reason for landing here on Parfumo, my ticket into the world of niche fragrances, my first real big love, so to speak.

Back then as today, the topic of longevity has been a major point of discussion, with one constant standing out to me: When I consciously tested the fragrance for the first time in 2018 and then bought a 100ml bottle with "longevity issues" (some batch from 2017), I first encountered all the discussions regarding batches, reformulations, weaknesses.
I still have the bottle from 2018 and also another one (250 ml) from 2020 - both hold their 8 hours wonderfully, project moderately, and are for me the two go-to fragrances for the office.
In the Souk, the batches from 2018 are sometimes traded at horrendous prices, and I am convinced that a major point is more about the maturation than the reformulations.

So - now a leap into the year 2024.
When I heard about the latest release, I was over the moon: An Oud Wood as a perfume, supposedly stronger, longer-lasting, there were whispers about a quality reminiscent of the Oud Wood fragrances from the very first hour in 2007.

At Harrod’s in London, I was able to test the fragrance - and bought it. For a staggering 330 pounds.
Admittedly: I had to rein in my facial expression enormously and keep my demeanor extremely under control when the lady told me the price. I didn’t want to back out anymore - and somehow: I am worth it… or am I?

About the fragrance itself: Straightforward, clean, intense, and strong.
For me, it is clearly the fragrance I will wear on a date.

It has far fewer edges and corners than the original (EDP), goes less deep, but feels denser, creamier, and thicker.
Oud Wood perfume follows the classic program, feels smooth due to the cardamom, which provides a cooling distance, but draws the counterpart in with the warm woods and spices.
The sharp Sichuan pepper (don’t worry, I honestly don’t smell any difference to “normal” pepper) and the warming amber harmoniously balance each other out.
With the spices, I have the impression that some gingerbread spices are included, in a very gentle, homeopathic dose: The fragrance thus feels sweeter than its predecessor. Clearly nothing I would wear to the office [he says, well aware that he regularly "delights" his colleagues with Alexandria II, Tobacco Vanille, and other bombs in the office].

Now to the question of all questions: How does it hold up?
For me, definitely stronger and better than the EDP. This is likely also due to the fact that the sweetness of the spices and the denser woods bring a certain “thickness” and “fullness” that are not present in the predecessor.
The sillage is moderate; it certainly doesn’t fill rooms, but is still noticeably more perceptible in the first hours when passing by than its predecessor.
For me, the magic happens on the skin when the fragrance is still strong enough to fascinate its counterpart while simultaneously pulling back a bit, becoming a little quieter, which makes the counterpart have to come a bit closer to smell more of it.

Is the fragrance worth the price?
I think, as individual as tastes are, so too is the perception of price-performance for different fragrances.
One could just as easily ask whether it is worth it for a person to fly business or first class, whether it absolutely has to be a 5-star hotel, whether the Porsche in the garage is really necessary...
The fragrance is, like the business or first-class flight, the 5-star hotel, and the Porsche, a luxury good that has long surpassed the premium segment.
It is a composition with a price tag. This price is something one is either willing to pay for luxury - or not.
Personally, I am happy and glad to own a 50ml bottle and will wear this fragrance with honor for our weekly date night or on other very special occasions.

In the end, I believe the fragrance will find its target audience.
Whether that is worth it to someone is left to the individual.

Finally, a fragrance worthy of the “parfum” label. This is essentially oud wood with the longevity dialed up to 100….EASILY 12-14 hours.

On me it is better in the air than on skin. I want both for a fragrance at this price point. Don’t enjoy the wearing experience.

Standard OW DNA amplified with the notes of cardamom, musk and I get fine amount of vetiver in the drydown. Performance is decent, avg.

Indistinguishable from Carved Oud Extrait de Parfum for me. Price is ridiculous.

I prefer the EDP version. Projection is convergent. Longevity +8 hours. The performance in the (parfum) version is slightly better.

Same opening as Platinum Oud 50 Years. It even features Tonka Bean. Dry down is sour though and not as smooth as the expensive one...

I'll keep it short and sweet: Cardamom and Oud annoy me with their overpowering dominance. Only a bit softer towards the end. For me, it’s - +

Tom Ford's marketing strategies are hard to beat in terms of self-love. The scent: smooth, pleasing, boring, expensive.
